The Edmonton Oilers lose one of their star players to injury at the worst possible time

Zach Hyman is getting surgery today, and according to Elliotte Friedman is likely 'out for the season'. The Oilers wingers suffered an injury after a mid-ice collision with the Stars' Mason Marchment last night in the First period. There was no call on the play. Hyman appeared to favor his arm or shoulder as he skated off the ice and immediately went to the room. He was seen congratulating his teammates after the victory in Game Four last night, but was offering 'fist pumps' with just one hand. Oilers Head Coach Kris Knoblauch says Hyman is 'most likely' done for the year. He would not specify the nature of the injury except to describe it as 'upper-body'. Some reports are that it is, in fact, a broken wrist. The Oilers gave not confirmed that. Some quotes from Knoblauch: On Hyman – 'Zach's season is most likely done. He's getting surgery today. And um…he'll be a while. So, we're not expecting him back for the playoffs'. On enduring injuries during the season- 'It really piled up at the end of the season with numerous guys, key guys, McDavid, Draisaitl, Ekholm, Hyman…just to name a few. There's gonna be times when guys are banged up and that's part if the game'. He added 'We're fortunate to have a lot of depth, that guys can come in and step up and give us quality minutes'. To say that this is a huge loss for the Oilers is an understatement. Hyman has been highly effective in these playoffs and was leading the league in hits with 111. But he was also producing of late, with 5-6-11 in 15 GP. The impending decision is who will replace him in the Oilers lineup for Game 5. Connor Brown is not ready to emerge from concussion protocol in time for Game Five, so then does opportunity knock for veteran winger Jeff Skinner who has not played since Game One of the L.A. series? Of perhaps does Kris Knoblauch use this opportunity to reintroduce D-man Mattias Ekholm into the lineup and entertain going '11-and-7'? Two fresh faces in the Edmonton Oilers lineup for Game 4, but one notable name remains absent

Article content Notable lineup changes and non-changes, for the Edmonton Oilers ahead of Game Four tonight… Article content Kris Knoblauch had already signaled that Connor Brown would not play tonight. All appearances lent belief that Viktor Arvidsson would draw back into the lineup for the first time since early in the Vegas series, and the coach confirmed that fact in his pre-game availability. Knoblauch: 'I expect him to pick up where he (Arvidsson) left off. That line, Podkolzin, himself and Janmark really played well. And I think four really important goals in a six game span. I just think with his game he adds speed and at this time of year physicality'. Article content Mattias Ekholm will not play tonight. So, the debate over who may have to come out for him or whether Kris Knoblauch would go 11-7 proves academic. Calvin Pickard will indeed return to the dressing room and back up Stuart skinner tonight. So, a memorable but uneventful time for third-stringer Olivier Rodrigue comes to an end…at least for now. Who knows! More to come… Now on Bluesky @ Also, find me on Threads @kleavins, Twitter @KurtLeavins, Instagram at LeavinsOnHockey, and Mastodon at KurtLeavins@ This article is not AI generated. Diamondbacks to Promote MLB's No. 4 Prospect, Plan to Play Him Regularly

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. On Monday, MLB updated its top 100 rankings after the graduation off the list by Kristian Campbell of the Boston Red Sox, Drake Baldwin of the Atlanta Braves and Cam Smith of the Houston Astros. Remaining on the list at the No. 4 spot in the rankings was Arizona Diamondbacks top prospect Jordan Lawlar. It was reported late Sunday night by Nick Piecoro of The Arizona Republic that Lawlar was being promoted to the major leagues and would join the Diamondbacks for their upcoming series against the San Francisco Giants. PHOENIX, ARIZONA - OCTOBER 31: Jordan Lawlar #10 of the Arizona Diamondbacks bats in the ninth inning against the Texas Rangers during Game Four of the World Series at Chase Field on October 31, 2023... PHOENIX, ARIZONA - OCTOBER 31: Jordan Lawlar #10 of the Arizona Diamondbacks bats in the ninth inning against the Texas Rangers during Game Four of the World Series at Chase Field on October 31, 2023 in Phoenix, Arizona. MoreLawlar has actually already spent time in the major leagues. He appeared in 14 regular season games as well as three postseason games during the 2023 season. He had a .129 average with 11 strikeouts in 31 at-bats. Lawlar was sent all the way down to rookie ball to begin last season. Injuries limited him to just 23 games before he was shut down for the year, and his return to the diamond this season has been spectacular to watch. Lawlar has a slash line of .336/.413/.579 in the minors, which comes out to a .992 OPS. He's hit 15 doubles, two triples, six home runs, drove in 31 runs and stolen 13 bases. All of those stats have earned him a re-call to the major league level. Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo has made it known that when Lawlar was promoted to the major leagues, the team would find a way to get him on the field and get him consistent at-bats. "Based on some of the things I'm telling you -- guys needing days off -- we could, if we need to, we could probably get (Lawlar in the lineup) 3-4 days a week, and that's enough at-bats per week. There's different criteria for different players," said Lovullo, according to It can be expected that he will spend time at shortstop as well as second base. He also may spend time in the outfield if needed. Lawlar, as well as the entire Diamondbacks organization, is hoping his second stint in the major leagues will go much better than the first one did. Ouch! Red hot Oilers goalie will also miss Game 4. What's it mean?

Article content This in from multiple mainstream media sources, word from Edmonton Oilers coach Kris Knoblauch that goalie Calvin Pickard will also missed Game Four. Article content Article content Pickard was injured in Game Two when Vegas forward Tomas Hertl crashed over him. There was no penalty on the suspicious looking play. Pickard has won all six of his playoff games this year, while Stuart Skinner has lost all three of his games, including Saturday night's 4-3 loss to the Vegas Golden Knights. Article content My take 1. Many fans were outraged at Skinner's performance in Game Three. Not me. I thought Skinner was OK. Yes he gave up a bad rebound on the first goal and he let a puck get through him into the crease on the winning goal. But he had 16 Grade A shots directed against him, while the Oilers had just 10. The expected goals in the game were 4.3 against the Oilers. Skinner let in four. In other words, he was average in the game, just as Adin Hill was letting in three goals against with an expected goals against of 2.9. Goaltending was not the difference in this game. Edmonton's numerous mental errors and lost battles were the difference. Vegas wanted Game 3 more, was the sharper, more focused team and they deserved the win. 2. I expect Skinner will be at least OK in Game Four. In many of his wins, Pickard was just OK, no better than Skinner was on Saturday night. That said, it was a major blow to the OIlers when Pickard went out with injury, and it's bad news he'll miss Game Four. He was on a red hot winning streak and had played his best game in Game Two, when Vegas had 21 Grade A shots on him, 11 of them 5-alarmers, yet Pickard still won the match, out-duelling Hill. Everblades Move On To Eastern Conference Finals, Eliminate Solar Bears To Take South Division Title

The Florida Everblades find themselves in a position they've become quite familiar with: waiting for their opponent in the Eastern Conference Finals. Florida eliminated the Orlando Solar Bears with a 3-1 victory Saturday to capture the South Division crown, winning the series 4-1. It was the Everblades' 14th consecutive post-season series win as they attempt to win an historic fourth straight Kelly Cup. Cole Moberg's power-play goal with 1:48 left in the third period was the difference Saturday, snapping a 1-1 tie and giving the Everblades the win. Orlando scored the only goal of the first period as Anthony Bardaro put the Solar Bears in front 1-0 at the 7:51 mark of the opening frame. That early tally proved to be the only goal of the contest for the home team, as the Everblades limited the Solar Bears to just 11 shots on goal over the rest of the contest. Colton Hargrove tied the score 3:25 into the second period, tipping home his fifth goal of the playoffs with Moberg and Logan Lambdin picking up the assists. While the Everblades couldn't score in the middle frame, they dominated the shot count 13-4 in the period. The score remained tied until late into the third period. With the possibility of overtime looming, Orlando's Alex Frye was whistled for a tripping minor with 2:10 left on the clock. That penalty would be critical, as Moberg potted the game-winner just 22 seconds later. Alex Kile and Hargrove each earning assists. Oliver Chau, the Everblades' captain and Game Four hero, closed out the scoring with an empty-net goal that beat the final buzzer for his third goal in two nights. Florida outshot the Solar Bears 15-3 in the third period and 37-15 for the game. Cam Johnson stopped 14 shots to backstop the Everblades' eighth win in nine playoff contests. Florida now awaits the winner of the Trois-Rivieres Lions-Norfolk Admirals series to determine who their Eastern Conference Finals opponent will be. Those two teams are currently tied at two games apiece in the North Division Finals with Game Five of that series scheduled for Sunday.
