Florian Hempel launches scathing attack on PDPA as German star claims 'that's how it feels'

PDC ace Joe Cullen recently questioned the purpose of the organisation and the German has now backed him up German star Florian Hempel reckons he's no chance of understanding the role of the Professional Darts Players Association. PDC ace Joe Cullen recently questioned the purpose of the organisation which the game's participants help to fund with a small percentage of their prize money. Speaking on the Game On podcast. Hempel says the troops on the circuit are struggling to acknowledge the purpose of the PDPA. ‌ He said: 'None of us 128 Tour Card holders actually know what they do. If Joe Cullen, who's been in the game for 15 years, doesn't know what they do, then I certainly don't either. ‌ "There are always a few guys from the PDPA around, like Peter Manley or Jamie Caven. "Former players who seem to have landed a post-career role, just so they don't need to find other work. "At least, that's how it feels. They each seem to have some small job, but none of them appear to have any real responsibilities. ‌ "Jamie Caven just sits behind a laptop typing things in. "He comes around once a year to talk to us, but it's never clear what it's about and it's never much.' ‌ Hempel laughed at one anecdote as he added: 'Peter Manley once scolded me for posting something on Twitter that he thought was inappropriate. "It was about a situation involving Mike de Decker. And I thought to myself, Peter Manley, the biggest bully darts has ever seen, is telling me what I can and can't post online. The irony was rich.'

Derek McInnes names the Hearts star he's admired from afar as Hibs fired firm derby warning

Neil Critchely failed to get one over the Hibees with the Jambos winning just once in the last eight capital showdowns Derek McInnes wants Hearts to be capital top dogs again and rip up the woeful recent derby record against Hibs. Former boss Neil Critchley failed to get one over the city rivals in three attempts last term – and the Jambos have won just once in the last eight showdowns. ‌ And, as a point of principle, new manager McInnes is determined to put the record straight. ‌ He said: 'The derby is obviously an attraction for any Hearts manager, the atmosphere and the whole intensity. "I'm looking forward to all the games, but the derbies are massive, I've attended loads over the years. 'And you get it, you know how important it is, and I also know how important it is for a manager to win these games as well. ‌ 'I'm looking forward to getting started and playing any team, but the Hibs games have got a bit more on it. "For the players, myself and the supporters, it's the games that we'll probably look for first when the fixtures come out.' McInnes has already got to work with deals agreed with midfielder Christian Borchgrevink, winger Alexandros Kyziridis and striker Elton Kabangu. ‌ The Jambos are also poised to sign Walsall midfielder Oisin McEntee. But the 53-year-old is looking forward to working with James Wilson, after the teenage striker's displays caught his eye when he was Killie boss. ‌ The new gaffer said: 'He's one of a few from the academy products that have come through. Credit to Naisy and Neil who played him. 'I remember a closed-door game against Naisy's team at Rugby Park a while back, the boy came on and I liked him right away. 'He's proven he's a good footballer and knows his way to goal. One of the boys who has a lot to offer.' ‌ You can get all the news you need on our dedicated Rangers and Celtic pages, and sign up to our newsletters to make sure you never miss a beat throughout the season. Eighteen years on from when Girls in Green record cap holder and current assistant coach Emma Byrne, Yvonne Tracy and Ciara Grant tasted European glory with Arsenal, McCabe became the fourth Irish player to win a Champions League medal as she played her part in the Gunners' final win over Barcelona. The celebrations were raucous and McCabe appeared in great form during Arsenal's Monday homecoming as she got on the mic to occasionally serenade the club's supporters and team-mates alike. But such is the life of a professional sportsperson, there's always another challenge on the horizon and the very next day, she had to quickly jet off to Turkey to join her Ireland team-mates ahead of Friday's UEFA Women's Nations League fixture. The 29-year-old arrived at the team hotel in Istanbul to a hero's welcome and a guard of honour. With the Turkey fixture coming so soon after the emotional rollercoaster of playing in a Champions League final and to be quickly followed by what will be a revenge mission against Slovenia next Tuesday, whether McCabe will start on Friday will be interesting to see. Katie McCabe was given a guard of honour by her Republic of Ireland team-mates as she arrived in camp ahead of Friday's clash with Turkey, a game Marissa Sheva thinks the squad will be better prepared for after longer exposure to Carla Ward's methods — RTÉ Sport (@RTEsport) May 28, 2025 She certainly will want to and manager Carla Ward would hope she's ready to go given the evidence of how Ireland performed in the first half of their last away game against Greece without her and how she then impacted the game positively after coming on at half-time despite being hampered by a calf strain. Indeed Ward has indicated that McCabe will be ready to lead Ireland out: "It was about her enjoying those celebrations but she's a professional, she's fit, she's ready. Maybe a question mark on her calf at the moment... but she's said to me straight away, 'I'm ready, I want to play', so of course she's available for selection." New faces and a fond farewell? Ward has called up US-born Adelaide United striker Erin Healy, who has scored eight goals in her debut season in the Ninja A League, and has been compared to the injured Leanne Kiernan by the Ireland boss. "I like to be involved in a lot of the play and I like to be creative" - new Republic of Ireland recruit Erin Healy on what the fans can expect from her #COYGIG — RTÉ Sport (@RTEsport) May 27, 2025 "If you have a look at her, she can score goals and link the play. Importantly, she has got a lot of pace and somebody we have been excited about," Ward said. While Kyra Carusa and Amber Barrett will be ahead in the pecking order up front, the Turkey game could provide an opportunity for Healy to make her debut and get some minutes in the latter stages. Similarly - but for different reasons - Louise Quinn could feature too. Having announced her retirement earlier this month, the veteran centre-back was included in this squad as she bids farewell from the game. But Quinn isn't expecting a final cap or two to be handed out between now and next Tuesday. "The fact that I was able to get the call-up – it's about the team, obviously – but I'm here to play. I'm here to fight for my position, it's not going to be given to me. I absolutely know that. Carla doesn't owe me anything," she stated. "I'm going to be training hard all week to try to get myself in the team and we'll see how it goes." Turkey a tough nut in Tallaght but have they tailed off since? Ireland will know they won't have it easy on Friday even if Turkey are ranked 58th by FIFA compared to 26th for the Girls in Green. Memories will be fresh of the reverse fixture in February - Ward's first as manager - when the Turkish proved a tough nut to crack as Ireland eked out a 1-0 win and endured a couple of tricky moments defensively. Turkey followed that up by edging to a 1-0 home win over Greece who are ranked slightly below them. Then in the double-header against Slovenia in April, they lost 3-0 on the road - a slightly better showing on the scoreboard than Ireland managed in going down 4-0 there - and then narrowly losing 1-0 on home soil in Sivas. The main takeaway is that, the Slovenia away game aside, they do not concede a lot of goals, especially at home so expect a tightly-fought encounter similar to the February encounter in Tallaght.

Celtic learn exactly when Frimpong payday will land as Liverpool move could instantly pay for key £6m signing

The Hoops are set to be in the money and could instantly reinvest it in a key signing Celtic are set to be in the money this weekend when Jeremie Frimpong seals his move to Liverpool – and it could effectively instantly pay for a £6million signing Brendan Rodgers is in the market for. Frimpong has been a glowing champion for Celtic 's recruitment strategy since his move to Bayer Leverkusen. They sold him for £11m just 18 months after paying a nominal compensation fee to Manchester City for his services, and are set to bank a further £6.5m from a sell-on clause when he seals a £30m move to Anfield this weekend. ‌ That will take Celtic's overall profit on the right-back to £17m and, according to the Daily Mail, it will be officially confirmed on Sunday June 1 when the transfer window opens. ‌ It's not as if Celtic are short of a few quid but the £6.5m boost will undoubtedly aid Rodgers ' cause as he looks to freshen up his squad this summer. One area where he needs reinforcements is out wide, particularly if Daizen Maeda continues his effective transition into a centre-forward position. ‌ It's hoped Jota will kick on and rediscover his previous form while Nicolas Kuhn remains an important player despite his dramatic fall-off in the second half of last season. But beyond that it's only Yang, who hasn't consistently convinced, and an ageing James Forrest who is entering the final year on his contract, available on the flanks. Antwerp's Michel-Ange Balikwisha has been heavily linked in the past and he looks set to move on after an explosive end to the season. ‌ And Voetbal Primeur say a fee of around £6m will be required to lure him away from the Belgian club. Were Celtic to move for him in the early stages of the summer window then the investment would effectively be covered by the bonus sell-on payout from Frimpong's move to Anfield. Balikwisha had his injury issues last season but finished with a consistent run of 10 starts in which he scored four and assisted three, primarily from the left wing. ‌ You can get all the news you need on our dedicated Rangers and Celtic pages, and sign up to our newsletters to make sure you never miss a beat throughout the season.
