Dean Technical High School graduate wins a brand new car

HOLYOKE, Mass. (WWLP)- The President and CEO of Gary Rome Hyundai gave back to the community by recognizing a high school student in Holyoke with a brand-new car. Since 2010, Gary Rome has awarded a Holyoke high schooler an Academic Achievement Award for their good grades, attendance, and behavior. 'I'm literally shaking, I'm so excited,' said Chelsea Salas, a senior at Dean Technical High School. Out of 150 finalists, 20 were chosen for the Gary Rome Academic Achievement Award. It's the only program in the region to offer a brand-new car to a deserving Holyoke high schooler. Each of the finalists was a good student with a 3.0 or higher GPA and fewer than 6 absences throughout the school year. In front of family, friends, school faculty, and staff, each student got in a line for a chance to pick a key that would start this red Hyundai Venue. A senior at Dean Technical became the lucky winner. 'We had to send an essay and write about what we felt like we deserved it and I wrote about being the youngest of four and growing up in a low-income household and didn't have anything. My parents work so hard, and I wanted to make them proud,' said Salas. Salas didn't know she won until she opened her eyes. 'I was the first one to pick out of the bowl, and I picked lucky number 3,' said Salas. 4 years of good grades, consistent attendance, and strong characteristics paid off. The school's guidance counselor is happy to see that Salas won her very first car. 'This is probably one of the most exciting days of our entire year. Seeing all their hard work kind of come to this has just been beyond exciting,' said Teresa Beaulieu, Guidance Counselor at Dean Technical High School. Right after she won the car, she graduated. This was an early present from Gary Rome Hyundai. Gary Rome said it's an award that is always remembered. 'This has made a difference in their lives, you know it's allowed them to get back and forth to college, allow them to take their parents to doctors' appointments, it's allowed them to make a difference,' said Gary Rome, President and CEO of Gary Rome Hyundai. Rome is thinking of bringing alumni back to future events. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.

The mother of the girl who lost her life to pediatric cancer told 22News the importance of honoring her memory through song and dance. 'Music was a big thing for Brittney, it was her passion,' said Elena Bliss, Brittney's mom. Local fundraiser is helping to support cancer survivors in need

HOLYOKE, Mass. (WWLP) – In the US, an estimated 40 and a half percent of people will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. A fundraiser in Holyoke, organized by the local group, 'Each Moment We're Alive' aimed to support those facing this challenge. The Derby Kickoff Party: 'Cocktails for a Cause' was held at Gary Rome Hyundai's showroom which was transformed into a vibrant derby-themed venue. The event featured a best derby hat competition, cocktails, live music, and raffles. Organizers told 22News that the fundraiser provided hope and support to cancer survivors in need. 'We help those survivors, help with the mental stress, the mental strain of what do I do next?Where's my life going next? I don't I don't know what to do. That's where we really come in and work with the community and work with them,' said Executive Director and Founder of 'Each Moment We're Alive', Cindy Sheridan Murphy. The organization hopes to have raised thousands of dollars to continue providing free services and resources to cancer survivors and their families. Murphy says these efforts have already helped change the lives of so many. 'I've seen so many in the last ten, 11 years of just going on and getting back into their lives and loving what they're doing and maybe something they missed. Now they're enjoying, or maybe they've found a new career path. So they find like there's just such a change in their life with the support,' said Murphy. Holyoke Community College hosts 24-hour fundraiser to benefit students

HOLYOKE, Mass. (WWLP) – A 24-hour marathon took place at Holyoke Community College on Tuesday, to benefit the institution's students. The campaign started at 12:01 a.m. on Tuesday and ends at midnight. The money raised will support both student success and education. 2024 Remarkable Woman reflects on her experience one year later Gary Rome Hyundai partnered with HCC to collect donations for student scholarships, the college's Food Pantry, the student emergency fund, and the President's Fund for Opportunity. HCC and Gary Rome look to secure 500 donors by the end of the day. This year, they hope to continue supporting students both in and out of the classroom. They're also looking to increase the number of people who receive education as well. 'It's a generational impact, because when one person in a family gets an education, usually there's multiple generations,' said Dr. George Timmons, President of HCC. 'And then it changes at the project area of not only your life, but the lives of those who come after you.' More than $770,000 has been raised for student support programs since the campaign started in March 2020. At the end of the campaign, they hope to raise $1 million.
