Assam Govt orders closure of 28 stone quarries, 18 crushers near Kaziranga
1 2 Guwahati: The state govt has ordered the closure of 28 stone quarries and 18 stone crushers in the Dolamara area near Kaziranga National Park, adhering to a Supreme Court mandate prohibiting mining activities. Furthermore, 10 mining permits and related operations, including stone extraction, sand mahals, and sand-cum-gravel mining contracts in the Rangsali area, have been terminated. This was confirmed by minister of state for environment, forest and climate change, Kirti Vardhan Singh, in a written response to inquiries from Assam MP and deputy leader in the Lok Sabha, Gaurav Gogoi. In "TN Godavarman Thirumulpad Vs Union of India & Ors" case, the Supreme Court in its order on April 12, 2019 had directed the Assam DGP and the SP concerned to ensure that no illegal mining and transportation of illegally mined materials took place in the Kaziranga National Park area and in the entire catchment area of rivers or streams and rivulets originating in Karbi Anglong Hill ranges and flowing into Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve. The minister further stated in the Lok Sabha that the govt has taken significant steps to mitigate the risk of road accidents involving wild animals and ecological degradation around Kaziranga. These steps include the construction of underpasses, elevated corridors, and culverts to facilitate the safe passage of animals across highways. The steps, as the minister stated, also include the identification and protection of wildlife corridors to maintain habitat connectivity and minimise the need for animals to cross roads. This is in addition to the installation of eco-friendly barriers and fencing along roads to guide animals toward designated safe crossing points. Implementation of speed-reducing measures such as rumble strips and speed breakers near wildlife crossing zones and putting up cautionary signboards to alert drivers about wildlife presence and enforce speed regulations are other steps taken by the govt. On the issue of the diversion of eco-sensitive land near Kaziranga for commercial or infrastructure projects despite its Unesco world heritage status, the minister said proposals were submitted by the state govt for consideration of the Standing Committee of the National Board for Wild Life (SCNBWL) after due recommendation of the State Board for Wild Life. Two proposals for diversion — construction of a four-lane tunnel across the Brahmaputra between Gohpur and Numaligarh and widening and improvement of the existing carriageway to four-lane construction from Kaliabor to Numaligarh — were recommended by the SCNBWL.

Himanta Biswa Sarma says his Parliament speech proved that he acts on behald of Pakistan. He also alleged that with Gaurav Gogoi's wife and both kids having foreign citizenship, he can leave India any time. "Speech delivered by our MP from Jorhat in Parliament yesterday proved beyond doubt that he acts on behalf of Pakistan. His secret trip and close ties with the Pakistani establishment speak volumes," the CM posted on X, adding. 'With his wife and both the kids holding foreign citizenship, he can leave India any time. He is a disgrace to Assam and a betrayal of our pride as proud Indian,' he said, without naming Gaurav Gogoi. He also asked India did not go further and reclaim the territory illegally occupied by the neighbouring country. 'The entire country, and the Opposition, were supporting PM Modi. Suddenly, on 10th May, we got to know that there had been a ceasefire. Why? We wanted to know from PM Modi that if Pakistan was ready to kneel down, then why did you stop, and to whom did you surrender? The US President has said this 26 times that he forced India and Pakistan to announce a ceasefire,' Gogoi said. He also questioned the government's 'silence' on security lapses. The Congress leader also hit out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi stating that he did not go to Pahalgam after returning from Saudi Arabia, but went to Bihar and gave an "election speech".

'You visited Pak many times': Shah attacks Gogoi; Congress MP says went before Modi
Union home minister Amit Shah on Tuesday lashed out at Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi, claiming he visited Pakistan "many times", and urged the leader to visit the border as well to witness the plight of Indian soldiers. Union Home Minister Amit Shah attacked Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi (R) during a debate on Op Sindoor in Parliament. Reacting to Amit Shah's attack, Gaurav Gogoi said he visited the neighbouring country before Prime Minister Narendra Modi went there "to eat biryani". Participating in the debate on Operation Sindoor in Lok Sabha, Amit Shah heaped praise on India's move, and also hailed the killing of three terrorists who were involved in the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack. Follow LIVE updates on Parliament session. Hitting out at Gaurav Gogoi, Amit Shah said, "They say there are no infiltrators? You have been to Pak many times Gogoi, ever been to the border? Look at the difficulties our soldiers. At 1.42 degrees, they stand on guard in between rivers and mountains." Reacting to Amit Shah's remarks targeting him, Gaurav Gogoi said, "I went to Pakistan before Modi ji went to Pakistan to eat biryani. I don't know why he (Amit Shah) brought that up." "Today was the time to accept the failures of the present government. Instead, they went to the past, and Amit Shah ji wanted to hide his failures behind the valour and the patriotism of the Indian Armed Forces," he added. He also brought up the controversy surrounding the upcoming India vs Pakistan Asia Cup match. "Maybe Amit Shah Ji would have been in a better position to say why BCCI is insisting on an India-Pakistan match. He would have much greater knowledge of why India-Pakistan cricket matches are happening," Gogoi said. A video of Amit Shah criticising Gaurav Gogoi was also tweeted by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who said the Home Minister "reiterated" what he had been saying all along. Sarma has often claimed ties between Gogoi and Pakistan, alleging his wife Elizabeth Colburn's ties to spy agency ISI. He had claimed that Gogoi's British wife had travelled 19 times between India and Pakistan, a charge termed "ridiculous, baseless, insane and nonsense" by the Congress MP.

‘Maun vrat': Congress's Op Sindoor delegation members will not be speaking in Parliament debate
The party sources said Congress's Deputy Leader in the Lok Sabha Gaurav Gogoi had reached out to Tharoor based on directions from Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi. The objective, they said, was to deny Tharoor the opportunity to claim that the Congress prevented him from speaking. Congress sources claimed that Tharoor was approached by the party to participate in the debate, but the Thiruvananthapuram MP expressed his unwillingness. On his part, Tharoor parried questions on the issue, saying 'maun vrat, maun Vrat', suggesting he is on a self-imposed vow of silence. New Delhi: Shashi Tharoor, Manish Tewari, Anand Sharma, Amar Singh—Congress leaders who were members of multi-party delegations to world capitals after Operation Sindoor are not among the speakers the party has lined up for a debate on the issue that began in the Lok Sabha Monday. In Tewari's case on the contrary, the sources said, he approached the party to participate in the debate 'but was not allowed to do so'. Former Congress MP Salman Khurshid was also part of one of the global outreach delegations. Those who have been picked by the Congress to speak include Gaurav Gogoi, who opened the debate from the Opposition side Monday. Others include Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Deepender Singh Hooda, Praniti Shinde, Saptagiri Ulaka, B.S. Ola, Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, Manickam Tagore and Shafi Parambil. 'The party had issued a whip to all its MPs to mark their attendance for the next three days and spell out its line on Operation Sindoor. Had Tharoor spoken and taken a different stand, he could have run the risk of attracting charges of violating the whip. He wants to speak on The Indian Ports Bill, 2025,' a Congress MP told ThePrint. As the leader of a multi-party delegation, Tharoor had travelled to the United States, Panama, Guyana, Colombia and Brazil. He heaped praise on Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his interventions, dismissed US President Donald Trump's claim that he brokered the truce between India and Pakistan, thus deepening his rift with the Congress which accused him of crossing the 'lakshman rekha'. At a recent event in Kerala, Tharoor, while responding to a student's question on his differences with the Congress, said, 'As you know, if you're following the news, a lot of people have been very critical of me because of the stand I have taken supporting our armed forces and our government and what happened recently in our country and on our borders. But I will stand my ground because I believe this is the right thing for the country.' 'Which is your first loyalty? To my mind, the nation comes first. Parties are a means of making the nation better,' he said. In Rajya Sabha, Congress President and Leader of Opposition in the Upper House Mallikarjun Kharge will open the debate for the Opposition. Senior Congress leader and former home minister P Chidambaram, who came under attack from the BJP Monday over his reported remarks that there is no proof that the Pahalgam attackers came from Pakistan, will also speak, along with Akhilesh Prasad Singh and Shaktisinh Gohil.
