From Shah Rukh Khan's family to Sidharth Malhotra: Celebs who have invested in Ritesh Agarwal's Oyo

Amid a buzzing investing environment in India, travel startups have seen capital flowing into them as the environment remains stable. Not just institutional investors, it now seems celebrities are also interested in becoming financial backers for these companies — a shift from their earlier roles that were restricted t brand ambassadors or endorsers. High profile Indians, including actors and A-list cricketers, are betting on online travel platforms, marking a shift in how this ecosystem is being funded. Recently, Ritesh Agarwal's Oyo raised over ₹ 1,400 crore in its Series G funding round, which was not just led by venture capital firms. According to a report by Skift, film producer and designer Gauri Khan, who is the wife of Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan, was among the investors in Oyo's latest fundraiser. Gauri picked around 2.4 million shares in the company, as per the report. This comes ahead of the much-awaited IPO of the online travel-booking platform, which is in discussion with banks to float its public offering soon. Preliminary discussions with investment banks have indicated a potential valuation range of $6-7 billion for the public offering, sources quoted by PTI said. Mint could not independently verify the authenticity of the Skift report. This article will be updated once there is an official statement available. The individual investment value of the movie producer has not been disclosed by Oyo as of now. The investment comes months after she backed Innov8, the Oyo-owned co-working brand. As per the Skift report, actor Madhuri Dixit, her husband Dr. Sriram Nene, and Dr. Ritesh Malik, founder of Innov8, have together bought 2 million shares in Oyo. Meanwhile, actor Amrita Rao and her husband, radio jockey Anmol Sood, have also invested in Innov8 via the secondary market. Bollywood actors Sidharth Malhotra and Kiara Advani have also bought shares in Oyo earlier. However, the concept of celebrities financially backing travel startups is not entirely new. In 2012, Salman Khan picked up a less-than 5 per cent stake in Yatra when he became the brand ambassador of the company. In 2013, Sachin Tendulkar picked up 7.5 per cent sweat equity in UAE-based OTA as he appeared for its campaigns. However, the rareity of the situation is changing now, as more and more celebrities look to invest in the travel industry, signalling possible growth.

The Oyo Connection You Didn't Know Shah Rukh Khan's Family Has

It's not every day that the cap table of a hospitality tech startup reads like a Bollywood afterparty guest list. But Oyo seems to be pulling that off. If the company ever does IPO, red carpets at the listing ceremony won't be metaphorical. It's no longer just institutional capital flowing into Indian travel startups. Celebrities are now showing up on cap tables, not just as brand ambassadors or endorsers, but as financial backers. From actors and radio hosts to cricket icons, high-profile Indians are betting on travel platforms, reflecting a broader shift in how India's startup ecosystem is being funded. The latest example comes from Oyo, the hospitality company that raised more than INR 14 billion ($163 million) in its Series G funding round. But this wasn't just another round led by venture capital firms. Among the investors was film producer and designer Gauri Khan, who picked up 2.4 million shares in Oyo. Khan is the wife of Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan. While the company hasn't disclosed the value of her individual investment, the funding round pegs Oyo's valuation at $4.6 billion, less than half its peak valuation of $10 billion. Khan has also backed Innov8, the Oyo-owned co-working brand. In a funding round completed earlier this year, Innov8 raised INR 1.1 billion ($128 million), with Khan among the participating investors. More Celebrities Turn Investors: Actor Madhuri Dixit, her husband Dr. Sriram Nene, and Dr. Ritesh Malik, founder of Innov8, have collectively bought 2 million shares in Oyo. Meanwhile, actor Amrita Rao and her husband, radio jockey Anmol Sood, acquired shares in the company via the secondary market. Bollywood couple Sidharth Malhotra and Kiara Advani have also invested in Oyo. This growing roster of celebrity investors points to a shift in how the travel sector is being perceived. Moving Beyond Endorsements: Travel companies tapping into celebrity capital isn't entirely new, but the nature of that involvement is changing. Back in 2012, Yatra signed on actor Salman Khan as a brand ambassador. As part of that deal, Khan also acquired a stake of less than 5% in the company. In 2013, Sachin Tendulkar picked up 7.5% sweat equity in UAE-based OTA in exchange for appearing in its campaigns. He exited after five years. While Salman and Tendulkar's involvement had been one-off during that time, what we're seeing now is a steady blurring of lines. Celebrities are turning into backers, sometimes advisors, even co-founders in some sectors. The travel industry, long considered too low-margin or too operations-heavy, is finally attracting their attention. Some More Celebrity Investors: In 2023, EaseMyTrip brought on Jacqueline Fernandez as both a shareholder and brand ambassador. The company raised INR 2.3 billion through a share issuance. Fernandez was brought in to expand EaseMyTrip's visibility, particularly online. What's notable about today's investments is that they are increasingly early-stage and equity-based. Deepika Padukone, through her firm KA Enterprises, has invested in multiple startups including the now defunct BluSmart, an electric ride-hailing company. Cricketer MS Dhoni has backed ventures in fintech, health tech, drone manufacturing, and mobility, showing a clear interest in platforms related to infrastructure and movement. Even Tamil film star Nayanthara has entered the ecosystem with an undisclosed investment in Ticket9, an event ticketing platform. Part of this has to do with the sheer size of India's travel economy. As more Indians travel domestically and internationally, the opportunity to build meaningful companies in this space has become more obvious. Add to that the IPO potential of platforms like Oyo, and it's clear why celebrities want a piece of the action. An unexplained fuel supply cutoff caused both engines of the aircraft to shut down seconds after takeoff, the AAIB's preliminary report released Saturday noted. The June 12 crash killed 241 of the 242 crew and passengers on board. Wilson clarified that all mandatory maintenance had been completed, fuel quality was not a factor, and the aircraft's take-off roll was normal. The report also confirmed that the flight crew passed pre-flight breathalyser tests and had no medical issues. Wilson in a letter to the employees of Air India urged the employees avoid speculation, highlighting that a final report is pending. A Look Inside Karan Johar's Luxury Duplex Designed By Gauri Khan

Designed entirely by Gauri Khan, the house mirrors Karan Johar's personality and, of course, is full of glamour. Karan Johar's place is not a 'space that can be imitated", and Gauri Khan made sure of that. And for someone who is all about glamour and luxury, the place feels right. We're talking about his sea-facing duplex in Bandra, Mumbai, which is an 8,000-square-foot space located on Carter Road and valued between Rs 30–32 crore. Designed entirely by Gauri Khan, the house mirrors Karan's personality, which is modern, stylish and of course, full of glam. The interesting part is that he didn't even see it until it was fully done. 'I have no contribution to it. This is Gauri Khan's baby. The night we called really close friends for dinner was the night I saw the house for the first time. So when I was showing it, I was also seeing it," Karan told Architectural Digest India. A Living Room With Dining Area Karan's living room has been featured in several videos, including his collaboration with Asian Paints. The space is filled with large, soft sofas in various beige tones. To break the monotonous vibe, Gauri included a green and a blue one that gave the space a bit of contrast. A striking chandelier hangs from above and immediately catches the eye. The area is not just for lounging, it also hosts casual work and friendly catch-ups. Just off the living room is a large dining table made of wood and marble that has seen plenty of celebrity visitors. Karan shared that he, Alia Bhatt and Ranveer Singh had important discussions about Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani in this very corner. A Bedroom With A Walk-In Closet Karan's bedroom is calm and personal. It has a soft bed, neutral colours and gentle lighting that make it feel peaceful. But what really stands out here is the closet that stores his collection of clothes and accessories from global luxury brands like Gucci, Prada and Balenciaga. Right next to the closet is a separate glam room. There is a large mirror surrounded by lights to give it an old Hollywood-style dressing room feel. A vintage chair sits in front of it that completes the setup. A Private Deck Step outside, and it feels like a shift from modern to natural. The deck with tall plants arranged around white and blue outdoor furniture. Karan, describing the space, said, 'This feels like some kind of Amazonian jungle where greenery is coming at you from everywhere." A Sleek Kitchen Karan's kitchen is minimal and sharp. It includes the latest appliances, wooden cabinets and white-toned lighting that keeps the look clean and modern. The counters are spacious and the storage is well-planned, which makes the kitchen functional without looking overcrowded. A Guest Bathroom That's All Copper One of the most unusual parts of the home is the guest bathroom. Designed in copper tones, the space stands out for another reason – it is stocked with tiffin boxes. Yes, actual tiffins are placed on the shelves for guests to take when they leave. Farah Khan, who toured the house for her YouTube channel, joked, 'We have to eat and poop at the same time!" To which Karan replied, 'We like to give people something on their way out." Lower Level Office The lower part of the duplex is dedicated to work. It includes a home office area, leather sofas and a bar where Karan hears scripts and has informal meetings. A wooden staircase with a glass railing and brass finishing connects the two levels. 'Gauri claims I am her best client, as I did not interfere even once! It would have been easy for me to keep checking in on the work, and I will admit, it was tough to not peek, but I did not go on site until it was all done. I trusted her taste and judgment implicitly," he told Architectural Digest. 'I travel so much, and when you come back, you want your personal space to not be anything like a hotel. And full credit to Gauri, she gave this space such a distinct identity, and also made this a home," the filmmaker added. The apartment was purchased by Karan in 2010. According to MagicBricks, the property is priced at around Rs 40,000 per square foot. tags : bollywood entertainment karan johar Location : Mumbai, India, India First Published: July 07, 2025, 10:05 IST News bollywood A Look Inside Karan Johar's Luxury Duplex Designed By Gauri Khan
