The 16-year-old prodigy handed Advani, who turned 40 on Thursday, a 5-4 defeat. The teenager had the small gathering spellbound with some amazing potting. Advani, who earlier came through a humdinger (5-4) against fellow Indian Aditya Mehta in the semifinals, couldn't stop his marauding rival. Advani kept Powell on a tight leash early on with his safety play. After the two players split the first two frames, the Indian came up with a flowing 73 clearance in the third frame and won the fourth on the black ball playoff to take a 3-1 lead in the best-of-nine-frame final. At that stage, it appeared Advani would wrap up the title in no time. But Powell fought back in splendid style. Manolo Marquez To Continue As FC Goa Head Coach For 2025-26 Season
Last Updated: Manolo Marquez will stay as FC Goa head coach for the 2025-26 season. Since joining in 2023, he has led the team to success and aims to advance in Indian and Asian football. FC Goa announced that Manolo Marquez will remain as head coach for the 2025-26 season. After guiding the Gaurs through two successful campaigns, the Spanish tactician will stay on for a third season. 'I am very satisfied to join FC Goa for a third season. I was very happy during the previous two seasons, where the team showed consistent improvement each year. The level of organisation that the club operates with is not commonly observed in Indian club football, making FC Goa a very special club," Manolo Marquez said when speaking of his return to Goa. 'It was clear for me that if I were to continue in India, it had to be with FC Goa," he added. Marquez, who initially signed for the club in 2023 on a two-year deal, has become the longest-serving head coach of the Gaurs, with a campaign spanning 62 matches across all competitions. He begins his third season with ambitions to not only advance the club in Indian football but also in Asian football, following the victory in the Super Sup last season. His first assignment will be leading the club in the preliminary stage of the AFC Champions League 2, against the Omani Professional League team, Al-Seeb Club, at Fatorda on 13th August. Regarding Marquez's extension, FC Goa's CEO, Ravi Puskur, said, 'When the opportunity arose to bring Manolo back, it was one of the most straightforward decisions we've had to make at the club. Over the past two seasons, he has not only delivered results but done so with a clear identity and a deep commitment to improving the group as a whole." Leading FC Goa to two consecutive semi-final appearances in the ISL, Marquez's record includes four consecutive playoff appearances in top-tier Indian Football, reflecting his tactical brilliance. He has a unique ability to identify young talent and develop players into valuable assets for the club, bringing to the forefront players who have since gained significant acclaim in Indian football. Puskur added, 'Manolo's ability to bring out the best in players — individually and collectively — along with his sincerity, work ethic, and clarity of purpose, align perfectly with the values we hold at FC Goa. In an environment where continuity and consistency are often hard to come by, Manolo represents both. 'His desire to win matches the right way, while developing talent and instilling belief in the squad, made this decision an easy one. We are delighted to welcome him back and look forward to building on the strong foundation he helped lay." he further remarked on Marquez distinctly paving the path for a winning philosophy at the club. Marquez remains steadfast despite the challenge of certain key players exiting the club. 'I hope that in the next season the team will again be very competitive. We have almost twenty players continuing with us from the previous season, a rare number in the current footballing world. The new faces will of course have certain adjustments to make as we cannot change what worked for us. The hope always remains that we will fight well and that the crowd will be proud of this team," he said. What Will Be Manolo Marquez'S First Game Back As FC Goa Boss? Currently, Marquez is focused on the opportunity for the club to excel on the international stage, stating, 'It is obviously not a usual pre-season for us. Generally, you get about six to eight weeks of training before you arrive at the first ISL game in good conditions, having played multiple domestic competitions already. We are in a special situation, but a great one for us at the club where we also have the AFC match to look forward to. It will be a difficult game against Al-Seeb, but we are of course ready to play against them and the target will be to be there with our best foot forward." top videos View all Joining Marquez in his coaching staff this year are two new members — Spaniards Marc Gamon as the Goalkeeping coach, and David Ramos as the Strength & Conditioning coach — following the departure of Asier Ray Santin and Jose Carlos Barroso. Gamon completed a two-year stint with Belgian club KMSK Deinze and reunited with Marquez last year. For the 2024-25 season, Gamon was Marquez's goalkeeping coach for the Blue Tigers. They previously worked together at Hyderabad FC in the 2020-21 season. Ramos, new to Indian football, brings experience from coaching clubs in Spain and China. The rest of his coaching staff, including Assistant Coaches Benito Montalvo and Gouramangi Singh Moirangthem, continue their roles at the club. In a state where football is cherished, Coach Marquez has built a deep sense of trust within the Goan community. Marquez appreciates the relationship the fans share with FC Goa and credits them with being a motivational factor behind some significant wins for the Men in Orange. My connection with the fans has gotten better every season. The fans have been loyal even when the team went through some hard times. Their support towards the club is very big for us, and we would hope for it to continue this year for all our games." he said. The silent warrior: Odei Onaindia leaves FC Goa with a lasting imprint
New Delhi [India], July 12 (ANI): Football often celebrates the flamboyant. The scorers, the playmakers, the dramatic match winners. But sometimes, it's the quiet figures at the back, the ones holding the structure together, who make the lasting difference. Odei Onaindia was one such figure at FC Goa (FCG). The Spaniard brought calm and stability to a team that twice came close to the Shield under his watch, as per the Indian Super League (ISL) press release. His two seasons may not have ended without any league silverware, but his influence was unmistakable, both as a centre-back and as captain. Onaindia joined the Gaurs ahead of the 2023-24 season, following head coach Manolo Marquez from Hyderabad FC. For most players, a club switch requires a period of adjustment with a new system, new teammates and a new environment. But for Onaindia, the transition was seamless. Reunited with a tactical setup he already understood, he slotted in instantly. Even his experienced centre-back partner Jhingan was sidelined midway through the 2023-24 season, FC Goa could have crumbled. But Onaindia remained unmoved. He adapted to a new defensive partner in Nim Dorjee and the backline didn't miss a beat as the team made it to the playoffs after two seasons. Eight of the team's nine clean sheets in the 2023-24 season came with him on the pitch. The Gaurs finished third in the regular season, their best finish in four years. This was after they spent the most days at the top of the table in that campaign. But their run ended in the semi-finals against Mumbai City FC, a tie where they had once led 2-0 in the first leg before eventually falling to a comeback defeat. Onaindia captained the Gaurs on a few occasions in 2023-24 but when the following season began, he led the side after the departure of Brandon Fernandes, the press release added. The results reflected that leadership. FC Goa finished second in the league table, bettering their points tally from the season before. They ended with 48 points, the same as 2023-24 Shield winners Mohun Bagan Super Giant. Once again, their run ended in the semi-finals, this time against Bengaluru FC, who edged the Gaurs on aggregate thanks to a last-gasp goal despite a second-leg win for FC Goa. But throughout the season, Onaindia continued to lead the backline with composure and clarity, playing a key role in the team's defensive setup while mentoring younger players within the squad. Partnering with Jhingan over two seasons, Onaindia formed one of the most disciplined defensive duos in the league. The two brought out the best in each other. Jhingan with his aggression and leadership, and Onaindia with his positioning and composure. Together, they were almost unbeatable. Across 28 league matches in which both started, FC Goa lost only three times. They also kept 13 clean sheets in that period. For two campaigns, Odei Onaindia brought consistency and calmness to the team's backline, contributing to two top-three finishes in the league and successive semi-final appearances. He may not have made headlines often, but his presence was felt every time he stepped onto the pitch, serving a reminder that not all leaders need to be loud to be effective. (ANI)

We deserved to be champions: Marquez
Bhubaneswar: Curtains were drawn on the Indian domestic season as well Manolo Marquez 's stint as FC Goa coach with the Gaurs clinching the Kalinga Super Cup with an emphatic win over Jamshedpur FC here on Saturday. And Marquez, who had simplified their objective throughout the tournament as the "need to win four games", couldn't be happier on walking the final mile with aplomb. "We did it. And we deserved to be the champions," the Spaniard emphasised at the post-match media interaction. "This might not be the best of titles but FC Goa are definitely the best club in the country in terms of its organization." Goa rode Borja Herrera 's double and Dejan Drazic's strike to claim their first major title since winning the Durand Cup in 2021. With the title win, they also earned a spot in AFC CL 2 and will be back in continental action after a gap of four years. Admitting that some of them would have liked the tournament to never end, the 56-year-old, sharing his wisdom and experience in the sport, advised the club to keep the group of players, who "are more friends than teammates", together for the club's upcoming domestic and continental campaigns. "Speaking from my experience in India, continuity is very, very important. Now, in modern football, with the agents, the players move around constantly. But if you get to keep the same group of players, usually the results are better every season. Then there comes a time when you need some change. But I believe that it would be a big mistake to destroy this group," he stressed. Meanwhile, Player of the Match in the semifinal as well as in the final, Herrera joined his departing coach at the press conference — beaming with joy at his consecutive Super Cup win, having won the last edition's trophy with East Bengal, also at Kalinga Stadium. "I feel very good here," quipped the Spaniard who also emerged as the tournament topscorer, along with teammate Iker Guarrotxena, with four goals. "I try to give all my best in every match and I have been lucky this time. We have an amazing group at Goa, we are a family and that is the main thing. I am very happy for everyone at the club and it was very important for us to try and win this one." Coach wants a tournament with just Indian players: Marquez, who refused to speak of the national team in his final moments with Goa on Saturday, however, said he was in favour of a tournament involving just the Indian players in order to improve their quality and that of Indian football . "In fact, they used to play this tournament in Spain (the Spanish Super Cup), in the '70s and '80s without any foreigner, just with Spanish players," remarked the coach while adding, "I would also like a competition only with Indian players. I think that would be good. I spoke about it. But they did completely the opposite. They chose to play with all the foreigners. No, not all the Indians, but obviously with all the foreigners. The quality is there because of them. But the improvement of Indian players should be more in focus in the future."

"There's no stopping our boys. Determined to win their first-ever Super Cup and make up for the ISL semi-final loss," said JFC fan, 28-year-old Aditya Pathak. Further, on the back of the show of unwavering support and affection for Javi Hernandez, Stephen Eze, Rei Tachikawa, and Javier Siverio, there's a word of caution coming from the JFC fans for the match against FC Goa , also known as the Gaurs. "The Gaurs are not an underdog but favourites. Our players have to do their best," said JFC supporter and school football coach, Sanjay Mahato.
