Ruth Jones' heartwarming BAFTA speech left viewers all saying the same thing

The Gavin and Stacey star accepted her BAFTA award giving a special shout out to co-star pal James Cordon leaving fans all saying the same thing. The BAFTA awards sparked lots of buzz this weekend following Sunday night's impressive ceremony. From Strictly Come Dancing's Dianne Buswell's emotional win to Danny Dyer's heartfelt message to his daughters, the touching moments of the award show captivated the internet. However, one win in particular left viewers saying the same thing, after a heartfelt acceptance speech. Writer and actress Ruth Jones took home the BAFTA for Female Performance in a Comedy for Gavin and Stacey: The Finale, where she returned to her iconic role as Nessa one last time. ‌ The final episode of the beloved British series drew in an audience of 12.3 million on Christmas Day last year, overtaking the 2019 Christmas special, which drew an overnight audience of 11.9 million, Bristol Live reports. ‌ The highly anticipated finale received impressive ratings and was praised by fans for delivering the perfect ending. Fans were delighted to see Ruth win the BAFTA for her role as Nessa. However, her acceptance speech left viewers all saying the same thing, sparking a discussion about one of her co-stars. She said: "I really wasn't expecting to win this. So, I want to thank the wonderful, gorgeous cast, many of whom are here tonight and have just been so lovely to work with over the years." "And especially to our director, Christine Gernon, who's directed every single episode." ‌ The actress also gave a shout out to the "unsung heroes" from the crew and production, as well as the BBC. Although it was her comments about co-star and co-writer James Corden that got viewers talking. "But the person I would like to thank the most is my dear, dear, talented, lovely, kind, funny friend, James Corden." The camera panned to James wiping a tear from his eye, as Ruth continued: "With whom I have shared this astonishing journey for the past 17 years and without whom Nessa Shanessa Jenkins would simply not exist." "I love you James. I love writing with you. Long may it continue." ‌ Viewers were quick to take to social media, comparing Ruth's comments with speculations about James and his personality and behaviour over the years. James had previously been labelled "rude" which resulted in him apologising on his American talk show, The Late Late Show with James Corden. The TV personality addressed an incident in a restaurant, telling the audience: "The truth is I have made a rude, rude comment. And it was wrong. It was an unnecessary comment, it was ungracious to the server." ‌ Ruth's heartwarming comments towards James made viewers question if this rumoured "rude" persona of the star were as true as people claimed. One user commented under a video of the speech, saying: ""If Ruth Jones can say that about James Corden, then I know all the crap that's said about him is rubbish." As one viewer replied: "I thought exactly the same." ‌ While other fans were quick to share their positive experiences meeting James, as a third user said: "I met James Corden at a West End show in February. He was so sweet & we had a lovely chat." "I met him and Ruth around season 2 of Gavin and Stacey and they were both honestly lovely people. James was so engaging and genuinely funny," a forth said. Ruth's win was the only award Gavin and Stacey took home on Sunday evening, as it lost out on its other nomination for 'memorable moment' to Diane and Chris McCausland's emotional Waltz during last year's season of Strictly.

Gaving and Stacey stars reunite at BAFTAs as Alan Cumming grills on fishing trip

The 2025 TV BAFTAs saw the cast and creators of Gavin and Stacey reunite at the ceremony - where show host Alan Cumming demanded to know what happened on that fishing trip Gavin and Stacey fans were treated to a cast reunion as part of the 2025 TV BAFTAs on Sunday. The long-running sitcom reached a satisfying conclusion on the BBC on Christmas Day last year after first airing in 2007. On Sunday night, the cast of the comedy series descended on London's Royal Festival Hall to cheer on show co-creator Ruth Jones who stood to win the Best Female Comedy Performance award for her role as Nessa Jenkins. She was joined by fellow co-creator James Corden and a number of other stars. ‌ The last ever episode, titled Gavin and Stacey: The Finale, was also nominated in the Memorable Moment category for the scene Smithy's Wedding: Mick Stands Up. With the cast in attendance, award show host Alan Cumming honed in on the cast to try to get to the bottom of an unresolved plot point that ran throughout the series. ‌ Gavin and Stacey star Rob Brydon, who played Bryn West, was at the ceremony alongside his castmates. Throughout the show, an awkward encounter was teased relating to Bryn and his nephew Jason that saw them left traumatised by events that occurred off screen during a fishing trip. Alan pounced on Rob to demand to know what had happened, begging: "Please answer it for us now. Uncle Bryn, what actually happened in that camping trip?' But it appears it is a mystery that will never be solved, as Rob teasingly replied: 'I never talk'. Alan also appeared to joke about the plot point never being resolved. He swiftly moved ahead with the awards, saying: 'Oh, sorry, Rob. We've got to go straight on with the next award. We'll pick it up at next year's Bafta." Later in the show, Ruth succeeded in winning the award. She said as she accepted her gong: 'I'm not going to lie this is immense." ‌ Thanking the man who helps her write the series, she gushed: 'The person I would like to thank most his my dear, dear talented friend James Corden.' She said without British actor Corden 'Vanessa Shanessa Nessa' Jenkins would not exist', as their final instalment of the show brought to a close the love story between his character and hers. Fans praised the final episode of Gavin and Stacey when it aired at the end of last year. And while it is not expected to return, there are hopes a spin-off could be created to fill the void for fans. ‌ Earlier this year Larry Lamb, who plays Mick Shipman on the show, claimed he cornered BBC boss Tim Davie and tried to convince him to commission a spin-off movie based on the show. He told the Daily Star: 'You'd make all the money over again... Well, he's the boss of the BBC. You don't give the game away, do you?' He added: 'From the look on his face it was either: 'That's not a bad idea,' or: 'I wish these people would stop trying to do my job for me. They can barely do their own.'''
