Delhi gets its coolest address: Ice rink in Dwarka, balloon rides by the Yamuna

New Delhi is preparing for two new recreational additions — the capital's first international-standard ice skating rink and its debut hot air balloon rides — aiming to boost sports infrastructure and open up fresh leisure avenues for residents, reported TOI. The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) has finalised the implementing agency for a state-of-the-art ice rink at the Dwarka Sector 23 Sports Complex. The 4,200-square-metre facility, featuring a 60x30 metre rink, will be completed in six months. 'The initiative, conceptualised and being executed under the guidance of lieutenant governor VK Saxena, would serve the dual purpose of providing recreational avenues to the people of Delhi, besides creating a state-of-the-art infrastructure for the training of sports enthusiasts,' officials said. Located close to the Urban Extension Road, the site is easily accessible from the Dwarka Expressway junction and the airport tunnel connecting Dwarka Sector 21 with IGI Terminal 3. The executing agency has been allotted the land and the project will be developed on a licence-fee model for 15 years. The selected builder will complete the construction in partnership with international collaborators. Live Events Filling a sports infrastructure gap 'LG directed DDA to explore the possibility of creating such a facility in Delhi,' TOI quoted a DDA official as sayin. 'It was felt that spaces in the capital for enthusiasts to train and participate and for organisers to host events in these sporting activities were limited. Hence, the decision to create an ice skating rink.' The project also aims to promote ice-based sports such as skating, curling, ice hockey and figure skating, which have seen rising interest across India. It will also serve as a climate-controlled indoor recreational option during Delhi's long summer. A DDA official added, 'DDA is systematically transforming Dwarka into a modern, well-planned sub-city. It is being developed with a focus on infrastructure, connectivity, green spaces, sports and recreational facilities.' The Dwarka Sector 23 complex is one of three centres of excellence being developed by DDA. This centre will focus on football, hockey and ice skating. The Sector 8 facility, inaugurated in May, specialises in boxing, wrestling, weightlifting and taekwondo. Another centre in Sector 19, focusing on tennis and shooting, is under construction. Balloon rides on the Yamuna floodplain In a separate move, DDA has shortlisted an agency to operate hot air balloon rides at four locations on the Yamuna floodplain — Asita, Baansera, Yamuna Sports Complex, and CWG Village Sports Complex. This will mark the first time residents will be able to enjoy aerial views of the city through recreational balloon flights. The initiative adds a new dimension to the capital's leisure options and comes alongside the broader push to enhance Delhi's recreational infrastructure.

Unscientific mining pushing Uttarakhand's Bageshwar toward disasters: Govt panel to NGT

A government-appointed panel has warned that unscientific mining in Uttarakhand's Bageshwar district is destabilising slopes, threatening villages and agriculture besides disrupting water sources in the fragile Himalayan region. The "Geological Assessment and Recommendations For Sustainable Mining Practices in Bageshwar District" report, submitted to the National Green Tribunal on July 30, called for sweeping reforms in mining practices and stringent monitoring to mitigate the risks. The panel, comprising experts from the Geological Survey of India, the Uttarakhand Landslide Mitigation and Management Centre, the Department of Geology and Mining and the Indian Institute of Remote Sensing, examined 61 mines across Bageshwar, Kanda and Dugnakuri tehsils. Live Events According to the report, most mines have altered natural slopes through steep vertical cuts and lack proper benches, making the terrain highly "vulnerable to landslides" and rockfalls. The team observed cracks, ground subsidence and rockslides at multiple sites. It noted that debris from mining was often dumped haphazardly into natural streams, choking drainage channels and aggravating waterlogging and slope failures. Several leases overlap with villages, farmland and water sources, directly endangering local communities. The committee highlighted that Bageshwar lies in seismic zone V, one of the most earthquake-prone regions in the country. Mining activities in such zones, if not regulated scientifically, could amplify ground instability. The experts stressed that the current monitoring system is inadequate and there is "no record" of how slope modifications have evolved over time. Satellite analyses also indicated land deformation around several mines, confirming the risk of further subsidence. The report said mining has disrupted drainage patterns, leading to "depletion and contamination" of groundwater. Springs, which are critical for local drinking water and irrigation, have dried up or diminished in flow in several affected villages. The committee also found that reclamation efforts at mined-out areas were mostly superficial, with no measures taken to ensure long-term slope stability or ecological restoration. In its recommendations, the expert panel called for strict scientific monitoring of all mining operations in the district. It proposed the installation of a local seismic network to track micro-earthquakes, deployment of satellite-based SAR technology to detect ground deformation and mandatory slope stability analysis for all existing and proposed mines. Such analyses, it said, should be reviewed by reputed academic and research institutions to ensure accuracy. The panel urged the creation of a geo-referenced database of all lease boundaries to prevent encroachments and better track risk-prone areas. It asked the state to reassess leases overlapping with villages, water sources or agricultural land. Aquifer mapping was recommended to understand the long-term impact of mining on groundwater reserves. The committee strongly insisted on adopting sustainable mining practices, including controlled blasting, proper drainage management and engineering measures to stabilise slopes. It said debris should not be dumped into streams and stressed the need for systematic waste disposal and site reclamation. Regular field inspections must be carried out to ensure compliance with mining plans and environmental norms. While the panel noted that riverbed mining, if done within prescribed limits, does not pose a threat to seismic stability, it emphasised that in-situ mining in Himalayan districts like Bageshwar should proceed only with extreme caution. Exporters fear cancellation of US orders, seek aid after Trump slaps 25% tariff on India

Exporters on Saturday flagged concerns about likely cancellations of orders from their buyers in the US in view of the 25% tariff imposed on Indian goods—higher than their competitors from Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Vietnam—along with a penalty that had added to the uncertainty. In a series of meetings with Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal , exporters of textiles, steel, engineering goods, and agricultural products also sought immediate rollout of an Export Promotion Mission , market support for goods meant for the US, as well as an interest equalisation scheme for pre- and post-shipment export credit. They want support,' said an official. Washington has imposed an across-the-board 25% tariff on all Indian-origin goods, effective August 7, along with a penalty. India's competitors, including Pakistan, Vietnam, Bangladesh, and Turkey, are in the 15–20% range. The steep duty could hurt nearly half of India's exports of more than $85 billion to the US, officials said. 'The problem with 25% duty is that our competitors are slapped with lower tariffs and hence, have a tariff advantage,' said a textile industry representative. Live Events Exporters said if the tariffs were 20%, the burden could have been shared by the importer, exporter, and consumer, but the 25% duty demands fiscal support such as higher incentive under the Rebate of States and Central Taxes and Levies scheme. The textile industry has also flagged concerns over likely layoffs in the sector, as the US accounts for a third of India's total textile exports and the high tariff could cause a loss of business. 'The US market is price sensitive with lower design elements. The impact will be visible on core sport items like T-shirts and home textiles from September when the peak season for textiles starts,' the textile industry representative said. The US was India's largest export destination in fiscal 2025 with shipments valued at $87 billion, accounting for about a fifth of the $437 billion total. Collaborative road map 'Had an insightful interaction today in Mumbai with leading industry captains from India's vibrant textiles sector. Discussed bold ideas to enhance global competitiveness, sustainability, innovation & value chain integration. Together, we're weaving India's rise as a global textiles powerhouse,' Goyal wrote in a post on X. In another post, he said: 'Held a productive dialogue with major steel producers in Mumbai. Focused on ideas like advanced tech adoption, reducing logistics costs, increasing iron ore production, and expanding India's role in global value chains by making our MSMEs more competitive. Looking forward to a collaborative road map ahead to forge a resilient & future-ready steel industry.' Due to a lack of clarity of penalty, orders are restricted and there is a need for incentives, said another industry representative who participated in the meeting. 'Also, the Russian import-linked penalty is not quantified or specified, and buyers are reluctant to place orders now. They don't know the landed price and duty.'

Should you keep eggs in the fridge? How improper storage could raise your risk of Salmonella

With summer temperatures soaring across much of the US, many people are double-checking how they store their groceries, especially foods like eggs that seem deceptively simple but are surprisingly sensitive. While your grandmother may have kept eggs on the counter, today's eggs sold in American supermarkets are washed, sanitized, and require refrigeration to stay fresh and safe. So, what's the right way to store eggs in the US? by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Join new Free to Play WWII MMO War Thunder War Thunder Play Now Food safety researchers say the fridge is your best friend, especially if you want to avoid spoilage, extend shelf life, and protect your health in peak summer heat. According to Professor Marina Elisabeth Aspholm, a food safety expert at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU), the safest and most effective way to extend the life of your eggs, no matter the season, is to keep them in the refrigerator. Live Events "It is always wise to store eggs in the fridge as it extends their shelf life," Science Norway quoted Aspholm, specializes in food safety and veterinary microbiology. Why refrigeration matters more in the summer Eggs are naturally porous. This means water and gases slowly pass through their shells, a process that accelerates in warm conditions. Storing eggs in the refrigerator slows down this natural evaporation process and inhibits the growth of bacteria, especially during the heat of summer. 'Eggs stay fresh and safe much longer in the fridge,' says Aspholm. 'Often even several weeks past the 'best before' date.' What about Salmonella? Why refrigeration matters more in the US Salmonella is a key reason eggs are always found in the refrigerated section at the grocery store in the United States. Unlike in some European countries, like Norway, where hens are vaccinated and egg production is tightly regulated, the US has a higher risk of salmonella contamination. That's why all commercial eggs in the US are washed and sanitized before sale, but this also removes their natural protective coating, making them more vulnerable to bacteria and requiring constant refrigeration. To stay safe, the CDC recommends storing eggs in the fridge at 40°F (4°C) or below and cooking them thoroughly. If possible, pasteurized eggs should be used in dishes with raw or lightly cooked eggs, like homemade mayo or sunny-side-up eggs, especially for children, older adults, or those with compromised immune systems. Are backyard or farm eggs safe? If you're buying eggs from local farms, private backyard hens, or international markets, the level of oversight is often lower. These eggs can carry a higher risk of contamination, especially when hens are outdoors and exposed to wild birds or animals. 'Eggs from hens that roam freely or come from countries with less food safety control should be heat-treated before eating,' Aspholm advises. Can you freeze eggs? Yes, but with a caveat. You'll need to remove the shell first. While freezing doesn't eliminate bacteria, it can still be a viable long-term storage method. However, frozen eggs lose some of their functional properties, such as their ability to whip into fluffy foam. So, should you refrigerate eggs? Absolutely. Especially in summer. Whether you're in Norway or elsewhere, keeping eggs in the refrigerator significantly extends their shelf life and reduces bacterial growth. Even if your local store sells them at room temperature, pop them in the fridge as soon as you get home.
