Primetime 585 Spotlight Team: Avon softball

The Primetime 585 Spotlight Team of the Week is the Avon softball team. On Tuesday, the Riverhawks faced Geneseo in a highly anticipated pitchers duel between Avon's Jessie Crye and Geneseo's Addie McDonald. Avon came out on top, as Crye threw a one-hit shutout with 13 strikeouts. Crye also led her team to the win at the plate, leading off the fourth inning with a triple. She then scored the game's only run on a sacrifice fly by Rylie Miller. Miller is batting .346 with nine RBIs. Avon locked it down on defense, highlighted by a diving catch from right fielder Caroline Hayes to help preserve the win. Catcher Abby Schutz made an impact behind the plate and is also batting .370 this season. Infielder Payton Rice was a force at shortstop and has a .357 batting average. 'They did a great job today, first of all, and I think I said to them, this is one of the best defensive games I've seen them play in probably a couple years,' head coach Jill Terry said. 'The girls put the ball in play, that's what we need to do on offense. Defense, we back up our pitcher.' Crye's had a dominant year on the mound. She has 113 strikeouts and has given up just 19 hits this season. Over her career, she has 772 strikeouts. The junior also dominates at the plate, batting an impressive .609 with 17 RBIs. 'There's so many good teams out there, but I feel like our defense, I don't feel that pressure on the mound,' Crye said. 'I know that my girls got my back, and if I keep pitching, I know they have me.' The team's camaraderie and trust in each other might just be the reason for their 9-0 season. 'We all have each other's backs, I think we're a very well-rounded team,' Hayes said. 'Especially on defense, we can all do a job.' Congratulations to Coach Terry and the Avon Riverhawks for earning the Primetime 585 Team of the Week! Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Roundball Roundup: Sectional Final Friday

Alexander earned its first sectional title in program history with a win over Geneseo in the Class C1 championship. After taking a one-point lead to end the first quarter, Alexander pulled ahead 29-26 to close out the first half. Midway through the third, Geneseo trailed by two. A layup from Oren Ray tied it up 36-36 with four minutes left in the quarter. Less than a minute later, Alexander pulled back ahead with a three-point shot from Mason Snyder. At the end of the third, the Trojans led by five. Alexander extended the lead to start the fourth, taking a 53-43 lead with five minutes remaining. A run from Geneseo brought it back to a three-point game, but it wasn't enough to come from behind as Alexander held it off to come away with the win. Dylan Pohl led the way for Alexander (19-4) with 17 points and was named tournament MVP. Kingston Woods had 13 points while Austin Wakefield and Jake Brooks each scored 11. Geneseo ends its season 18-5. Seven-seeded York capped off its Cinderella run with a sectional title, defeating Bolivar-Richburg in the Class C2 championship. Bolivar-Richburg led 14-12 at the end of the first quarter, but York pulled ahead 29-28 at the break. In the third, Bolivar-Richburg took the lead back by two, but eight-straight points from Yerial Diaz-Pena helped York take a seven-point lead with two minutes remaining in the quarter. Bolivar-Richburg responded with a 6-0 run capped off by a three-point shot from Landon Barkley to close the gap to just one. At the end of the third, York pulled back ahead to lead 48-45. In the fourth, Bolivar-Richburg regained the lead on a three from Kingston Loucks with six minutes to play. But York had an immediate answer from Parker Bonefede to take the lead right back. Back-and-forth buckets kept it close with just a few minutes left to play, but a three from Ryan Brady put York out front for good as it secured its first title since 2022. Bonefede led York (13-11) with a double-double, scoring 29 points with 12 rebounds to earn tournament MVP. Liam Ezard added 18, and Brady chipped in eight. Loucks paced Bolivar-Richburg (17-7) with 21 points. Barkley finished with 13, and Braden Zilker brought in 10. Landon Washburn's 17 points pushed Honeoye to its first sectional title since 1997 in a win over South Seneca (20-3). Honeoye opened on an 8-2 run and led 16-11 at the end of the first. The Bulldogs extended the lead to 11 at the half. With a 15-point lead after the third quarter, Honeoye (22-1) maintained the lead in the final eight minutes to get the win. Washburn was named tournament MVP with his game-high performance. A decisive third quarter powered the Red Raiders to their second straight sectional title. Fairport led 18-15 at the half, but outscored Greece 20-8 in the third quarter to pull in front 38-23. However, Arcadia/Olympia (8-14) got rolling in the fourth quarter and scored the first 13 points of the frame to pull within two points at 38-36. But the Red Raider defense locked down from there and didn't allow a field goal the rest of the way, scoring 8 of the final 10 points to get the victory. Fairport (14-8) advances to the Far West Regionals where they will play the Buffalo representative on Friday, March 14th at 5:30 p.m. at Buffalo State University. The game was a rematch of last year's Class AAA final, which Fairport won 42-35. A stingy second-half defensive effort powered Hornell to their third straight sectional title. The Cinderella Blue Devils were in front 23-22 at the half. Then, Hornell suffocated their upset bid. The Red Raider defense kept Mynderse scoreless in the third quarter, with Hornell scoring ten points in the frame to take a 32-23 lead. It took Mynderse until there was 1:15 left in the fourth quarter to finally register a field goal in the second half. By then, Hornell was up by 11 points and it was far too late for a comeback. Payton Bentley led the defensive effort for Hornell, tallying three blocks in the fourth quarter alone. Jordan Dyring paced Hornell with 17 points, the only player in double figures in the low-scoring affair. She was named Tournament MVP. Payton Bentley and Raegan Evingham each scored six points. Mynderse (11-13) was led by Peyon Verkey who tallied nine points via a trio of three-pointers. Hannah O'Brien scored six points. The Red Raiders will play Lyons in the Class B crossover game on Tuesday, March 11th for the right to go to the state tournament. After a sluggish second quarter, a dominant third quarter powered the Lions to their first sectional title since 2014. Lyons led 16-10 after the opening frame, but tallied just four points in the second quarter. Mynderse scored 18 in the frame to take a 28-20 lead into the half. Each team traded buckets to start the third, but then the Lions went on a 19-2 run to take a 41-32 lead. Lyons ended up with 23 points in the quarter to take a 43-36 lead into the fourth quarter. Marcus Whitman kept it close and was able to cut the deficit to 46-43 with just under four minutes to play. But Lyons locked down and scored three quick buckets to push in front for good. Car'Mella Parker led Lyons with a game-high 21 points. Jayla Bell orchestrated the offense and had 18 points, earning her Tournament MVP honors. Ja'Niyah Bell added seven points. Lilyanna Carroll scored 13 points for Marcus Whitman (20-3). Sophia Snyder and Madison Daggett each had 11.
