Former Wake Forest University basketball player thrown from car in multi-vehicle crash
FRANKLIN COUNTY, Ga. (WGHP) — A former Wake Forest University basketball player is recovering in the hospital after being thrown from his car after a three-vehicle crash. From one basketball mom to another, Maria Reid made sure to check on her friend Irene Cosby after her son, former Alabama and Wake Forest University basketball player Davin Cosby Jr., was involved in a car crash in Georgia. 'Always respectful when I would see him at the game. Always had the good word for anybody. Just a great young man. Just a great young person, and I know he's going to have an impact on this world,' Reid said. According to the Georgia State Patrol, on July 13, around 3 p.m., the 20-year-old was driving north on Interstate-85 in Franklin County, Georgia. Officials say he was following a vehicle too closely and hit it. He then overcorrected, causing his vehicle to flip and hit another car. 'The car flipped over three times … He actually went through the sunroof,' Reid said. He survived and is recovering in a Georgia hospital with his mother by his side. She told FOX8 he's undergone two surgeries. He can't remember much from the wreck, but he did give Reid a phone call, thanking her for helping his family. 'He said, 'Thank you, Ms. Reid, so much for all you're doing,' and he sounded good … He was very grateful and very thankful that people would help his mom through this time,' Reid said. Though it could be a long time before Davin gets back on the basketball court, Reid said his mom is asking for prayers. 'I told her my God is awesome. He will move mountains … He will hide you from the rain. I told her this … was not his time to go,' Reid said. According to the Georgia State Patrol, Davin was cited for hitting one of the vehicles in the crash. A GoFundMe has been set up. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Georgia sees surge in deadly ATV, off-road vehicle crashes
The Brief Georgia law enforcement reports a rise in deadly crashes involving ATVs and MPOHVs, with 13 deaths and 64 serious injuries from January to June 2025. A voluntary registration program for MPOHVs was launched, allowing qualified vehicles to operate on county roads with specific requirements, excluding ATVs and similar vehicles. Officials emphasize the importance of adhering to traffic laws and safety guidelines for off-road vehicles, highlighting risks associated with unsafe operation. ATLANTA - Georgia law enforcement officials are urging caution after a surge in deadly crashes involving all-terrain vehicles (ATVs), golf carts, and multipurpose off-highway vehicles (MPOHVs) across the state. What we know From Jan. 1 through June 20, 2025, the Georgia State Patrol investigated 42 crashes involving ATVs and MPOHVs, resulting in 13 deaths and 64 serious injuries. Statewide, 14 people have died and 114 have been seriously injured in off-road vehicle incidents this year. Eight of the fatalities involved MPOHVs and six were linked to ATVs. Among the deadly incidents, a 16-year-old passenger died on May 31 in Southeast Georgia after an ATV veered off the road and struck a tree. In another case, a 39-year-old man was found dead under an overturned MPOHV on private property in Middle Georgia on June 15. The Georgia Department of Revenue's Motor Vehicle Division launched a voluntary registration program for MPOHVs on Dec. 1, 2023. The program allows qualified vehicles to operate on county roads and issues metal license plates for them. To qualify, MPOHVs must have utility features and meet specific requirements. They may cross city streets or state highways but cannot operate on them. The registration excludes vehicles such as dirt bikes, three-wheelers, four-wheelers (ATVs), and others with handlebar steering or straddle seats. Those vehicles may still be used off-road without registration. What they're saying "These vehicles can be fun and useful on trails, private land, and designated county roads. But they come with serious risks—especially when not operated safely," said Colonel William W. Hitchens III, Commissioner of the Georgia Department of Public Safety. The Department of Public Safety reminds drivers and riders to follow all applicable traffic laws and safety guidelines. These vehicles are subject to the same laws and penalties as other motor vehicles, including those related to impaired or distracted driving and insurance requirements. Georgia Troopers Smack Down Car Theft Suspect
Read the full story on The Auto Wire Georgia troopers are known for not treating fleeing suspects kindly, so to see them smack down this car thief is no surprise. The guy was in the wrong kind of car for running from Georgia State Patrol: a Ford Fusion. There's been a bad track record with those sedans and police chases in the least in this pursuit nobody died or was seriously injured, although the suspect got close to hitting innocent bystanders. He even caught some air. In the dashcam footage you can see everything started off calm enough. Two troopers move into position behind the suspect vehicle after it's been identified. Once they go lights and sirens the guy doesn't just take off but instead drives like he's trying to find a place to pull over. The thing is there are a lot of good places to pull over and get arrested. He obviously is stalling, looking for an escape route with less traffic. Turning left, he finds it and punches the accelerator. While a Ford Fusion might be great for blending in and stealing hotter rides, it's not a good getaway vehicle. He can't out-accelerate the GSP Dodge Chargers, even when he sends it at the railroad crossing and catches some decent air. But the guy is obviously determined to make something out of nothing, so he keeps flogging the poor Fusion. But as he enters a freeway, one trooper swoops in and PITs him. The suspect obviously has done this before, because he just drives out of the PIT and keeps going. That's when a second trooper delivers one hell of a PIT, sending the Ford careening into a roadside barrier hard. It's the end of the line for the sedan, but the suspected car thief seems to believe he's some sort of track star. For that effort, the guy earns a chomp in the leg by a K9 and a taser deployment before getting arrested. ‘No Kings' organizers working with law enforcement in hopes of peaceful protest on Saturday
Organizers are planning more than a dozen protests all across metro Atlanta on Saturday as part of the nationwide 'No Kings' demonstrations against President Donald Trump and his policies. Law enforcement said they are prepared. More than 5,000 people are expected to crowd into Liberty Plaza on Saturday morning as part of the demonstration. Laura Judge of Indivisible North Metro Atlanta is one of the organizers. 'Just seeing some of the things that he does, we wanted to take a stance and say that we don't have kings in America,' she said. 'Because we have gotten the other permits and we're working with Atlanta police as well as Capitol police, we do want to respect and show that First Amendment rights look different to everyone,' Judge said. Elliot also spoke with Georgia State Patrol Commander Col. Bill Hitchens, who confirmed the organizers have been working with them to make sure everything goes off without any problems 'It's one of the core tenets of our country that people have a right to protest and say their issues or disagreements with the government as long as it's peaceful and doesn't cross certain lines,' Hitchens said. But State Attorney General Chris Carr warns that if outside agitators come in and spark violence, his office will prosecute under the state's domestic terrorism statute. 'I will defend your right to peacefully protest, but again, if you are going to go after, light buildings on fire, or shoot police officers, or loot buildings, nope, we're not going to stand for it,' Carr said. The big protest at Liberty Plaza is scheduled to start at 10 a.m. Saturday.
