Woltemade to stay with Germany senior team for NL third place match

Germany's Nick Woltemade (L) and Portugal's Ruben Dias battle for the ball during the UEFA Nations League semi final soccer match between Germany and Portugal at Allianz Arena. Peter Kneffel/dpa Forward Nick Woltemade will stay with the German senior national team for Sunday's Nations League match for third place and not move on to the under-21 team as originally planned. The German Football Federation (DFB) said on Thursday it was decided after internal discussions that Woltemade will join the U21 side preparing for the June 11-28 European championships in Slovakia right after Sunday's game. Advertisement VfB Stuttgart's Woltemade, 24, was called up for the first time into the senior team by coach Julian Nagelsmann for the Nations League finals. He earned his maiden cap right away in the starting 11 of Wednesday's 2-1 semi-final defeat against Portugal, and Nagelsmann said that Woltemade "made good use of his first 60 minutes." Nagelsmann had initially said that Woltemade would now return to the U21 side as part of an agreement with their coach Antonio di Salvo. Woltemade is seen as a key player in the U21 title ambitions but the senior team also wants to end the Nations League on a positive note with victory in Woltemade's Stuttgart home stadium, where title holders Spain or France will be the opponent. Nagelsmann is missing several attacking players due to injury, such as Jamal Musiala, Kai Havertz and Tim Kleindienst.

Oberdorf won't be included in Germany squad for women's Euro 2025

Germany's Lena Oberdorf in action during the UEFA European Championship Women's qualifier soccer match between Germany and Poland at Ostseestadion. Sebastian Gollnow/dpa Bayern Munich midfielder Lena Oberdorf won't be included in the Germany squad for the women's Euro 2025 in Switzerland this summer, the German Football Federation (DFB) said on Wednesday. The player ruptured the cruciate ligament in her knee in July last year. Advertisement "She is on a good path, but the Euros are too early for her," coach Christian Wück said in a DFB statement. "We want to give her time to prepare fully and look forward to seeing her again in the new season," he added. Wück will name his squad for the tournament on June 12. The midfielder hasn't played a single match since her injury. However, she was included the Germany squad for the Nations League matches against the Netherlands last Friday and against Austria on Tuesday, and trained with the national team. It was important "that we have Obi here with us again so that we can fully assess her performance," Wück explained. The DFB officials had previously agreed with Bayern that Oberdorf would not play in the Nations League matches.

German FA doubles bonus for women's team to win Euro 2025

Germany's national women's soccer team coach, Christian Wueck (C), speaks to the players during a training session at the DFB Campus. Germany's women footballers will receive a record bonus if they win the European Championship title this July. Arne Dedert/dpa Germany's women footballers will receive a record bonus if they win the European Championship title this July. Each player will earn €120,000 ($136,500) if they lift the trophy in Switzerland, the German Football Federation (DFB) announced on Tuesday. Advertisement The bonus for winning the last Euros in England in 2021, when Germany finished second to the hosts, was half as much. From the quarter-finals onwards, Germany players will receive "performance-based bonuses" as agreed by the team council and the federation. For reaching the last eight, each player could earn up to €45,000. Reaching the semi-finals would bring €65,000, and participation in the final would be rewarded with €90,000. The final will take place on July 27 at St. Jakob-Park in Basel. "There needs to be more performance incentives in women's football," DFB president Bernd Neuendorf said in a statement. "The victory bonus, now doubled compared to the last European Championship, is therefore an important signal." Advertisement Captain Giulia Gwinn commented: "For us as a national team, sporting success is the top priority. That's why it was clear to us from the start that we would agree on a performance-based bonus system." She added that the team and the federation had "found a good solution together." Record eight-times winners Germany, led by coach Christian Wück, will begin their European Championship campaign on July 4 in St Gallen against Poland. They then face Denmark on July 8 in Basel and the third group-stage match will take place on July 12 in Zurich against Sweden.

The German Football Federation (DFB) said on Friday that Wagner asked to be released and will leave after the Nations League finals in early June where Germany play Portugal in the semi-final, and then the final or match for third place. Advertisement Former Bayern Munich and Germany striker Wagner, 37, became national team assistant coach in 2023 when Julian Nagelsmann was appointed head coach. He helped the team get back on track after some poor years as Germany reached the Euro 2024 quarter-finals and now the Nations League Final Four. "Working as an assistant coach for the German national team was and is a huge honour for me. I will always be grateful for this opportunity and am proud that we have achieved so much with a great coaching team," he said in the DFB statement. "But I want to take the next step soon. It's no secret that I have a great desire to work as a head coach myself one day." Advertisement Nagelsmann said: "I personally understand Sandro's desire to become head coach and respect his decision. We had a good and always transparent dialogue. Sandro has enriched our team with his expertise and as a person." National team sporting director Rudi Völler said that Wagner "has developed enormously in his collaboration with Julian Nagelsmann" and that he "played a decisive role in our team's inspiring performance" at the home Euros. "I am sure that we will soon see Sandro back on the sidelines as head coach. He will go his own way!" Völler said.
