Love After The Golden Bachelor: Who Found Romance Off-Screen?

When The Golden Bachelor premiered in September 2023, it felt like a breath of fresh air — a reminder that love doesn't come with an expiration date. Dozens of seniors stepped into the spotlight, giving their hearts another chance in the first-ever season of ABC's spinoff of the beloved dating show. While all eyes were on Gerry Turner , the inaugural Golden Bachelor himself, it didn't take long for viewers to fall just as hard for the women vying for his heart. Their quick wit, warmth, and fearless dedication to finding love later in life made them instant fan favorites. But the journey didn't end there. Enter The Golden Bachelorette , where Joan Vassos took center stage. Twenty-four men lined up for a shot at her final rose, and in the end, it was Chock Chapple who captured her heart. Yet Joan's story wasn't just about finding her own love — she saw something more in the connections she built along the way. By November 2024, Vassos had already stepped into a new role: matchmaker. 'I have two of them talking… I have one that hasn't quite worked out and I have one that I'm about to do,' she shared with Entertainment Tonight. 'My work here is not finished.' And she meant it. Now, as Bachelor in Paradise gears up for a summer 2025 premiere — this time featuring contestants from the Golden world — the love stories are just getting started. Leslie Fhima and Gary Levingston have already been confirmed to hit the beach, ready to chase new beginnings under the sun. But not everyone needed another rose ceremony to find romance. Several contestants from both The Golden Bachelor and The Golden Bachelorette have found love off-screen, far away from the cameras. Even Gerry Turner, after a highly publicized on-screen wedding to Theresa Nist in January 2024, found himself back on his own path. Just months later, in April, Turner and Nist announced their decision to file for divorce — a bittersweet reminder that even the grandest televised fairy tales can face real-world challenges. Still, for many of these contestants, the adventure was never just about finding love on television. It was about opening their hearts again — and in that sense, they've already won. As summer approaches and the beach beckons, one thing is clear: For the Golden cast, the story isn't over. In fact, some of their best chapters may be just beginning.

"Golden Bachelor" Gerry Turner is offering fans an update on his ongoing battle with cancer. In a Tuesday appearance on the "Bachelor Happy Hour" podcast, Turner said he felt "great" as he awaits treatment for bone marrow cancer − a diagnosis he revealed in December. "Until I have any symptoms, there's no treatment. So I go frequently for blood tests. I'm on, like, a six-month schedule now," Turner, 73, said. "I feel optimistic because the doctor has said, 'Well, when you turn 75, we're going to have to go three-month increments.' So it's telling me that at least he expects me to live another couple of years to get to that. But the bottom line is I feel really good." Turner, the inaugural star of ABC's dating show for contestants in their golden years, first told fans he had been diagnosed with cancer last year, telling People magazine that "it was like 10 tons of concrete were just dropped on me." Considered a type of Non-Hodgkin lymphoma, the condition converts some white blood cells into cancerous ones, according to the Mayo Clinic. Even without a cure, Turner says his grasp on life is stronger than ever. "I mean this sincerely, from the time I got this diagnosis, it's a privilege to live like you're dying," he told "Bachelor Happy Hour" hosts. "I don't turn down anything. And so, in a way, it's really a good thing." Turner, who got engaged to his "Bachelor" season finalist Theresa Nist, then married in a televised ceremony and divorced in the space of months, said when revealing his diagnosis that the disease had factored into their decision to split. 'Golden Bachelor' breakup bombshell: Look back at Gerry Turner, Theresa Nist's romance "I wanted my life to continue on as normal as possible, and that led me to believing that as normal as possible more meant spending time with my family, my two daughters, my two son-in-laws, my granddaughters," he told People. "And the importance of finding the way with Theresa was still there, but it became less of a priority." At the time of its announcement, fans of the franchise voiced dismay over Nist and Turner's decision to divorce noting that it followed in a long line of "Bachelor Nation" couples who couldn't make it work. Age, it seemed, was no protection against the show's faulty formula for lasting romance. But Turner told People he hopes this revelation will prompt fans to reconsider. "Hopefully they'll look at things a little bit differently," he told the magazine, "that maybe it wasn't quite a rash, fast decision that people thought. That there was something else going on." Nist told a different story in an interview with People, saying she didn't believe Turner's diagnosis was "a factor in the ending of the relationship, at least not for me." Despite their conflicting reports, Nist said she wished her ex-husband the best. "I wish for him a long and healthy, prosperous life, and I hope that he finds his person. I want him to be so happy, and I just wish him all the best of everything in the world," she said.

The Golden Bachelor's Gerry Turner shares health update months after revealing cancer diagnosis

Gerry Turner from The Golden Bachelor has updated fans on his cancer treatment. Turner, who revealed his bone marrow cancer diagnosis in December, appeared on Tuesday's episode of the Bachelor Happy Hour podcast, where he discussed his condition with hosts Joe Amabile and Serena Pitt. 'I feel great,' he said. 'Until I have any symptoms, there's no treatment. So I go frequently for blood tests. I'm on, like, a six-month schedule now, and I feel optimistic because the doctor has said, 'Well, when you turn 75, we're going to have to go three-month increments.' So it's telling me that at least he expects me to live another couple of years to get to that. But the bottom line is I feel really good.' Turner added that he was seeing the diagnosis as an opportunity to 'live like you're dying' and never shies away from saying 'yes' to anything he's offered. 'The person I'm dating will say, 'Do you want to go do-' And before she even gets out the rest of the sentence, I will say yes. So I'm in on everything,' he continued. 'And it makes life exciting because you kind of in the back of your head feel like you've got a lot of living to do, and you don't know how long you have to do it, so don't turn down anything. And so, in a way, it's really a good thing.' The Golden Bachelor alum revealed in a December interview with People that he found out about having cancer after suffering a shoulder injury while playing pickleball three years ago. 'Finally I got around to going [to the doctor] and the orthopedic surgeon said, 'Yeah Gerry, there's not much we can do for your shoulder, but there are some unusual blood markers here,'' he said at the time. 'And so an orthopedic surgeon went to my family doctor, my family doctor referred me to an oncologist, and now I'm working with a hematology-oncology group in Fort Wayne.' He continued: 'Unfortunately, there's no cure for it. So that weighs heavily in every decision I make.' Turner's condition was formally known as Waldenström's macroglobulinemia, which is when white blood cells are transformed into cancer cells, according to the Mayo Clinic. It is also considered a type of non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Although Turner was only originally told he had a 'blood disorder,' he explained that he 'pretty much' knew it would lead to cancer.

'Golden Bachelor' Gerry Turner says incurable cancer 'makes life exciting'

"The Golden Bachelor" Gerry Turner remains in good spirits despite his incurable cancer diagnosis. The 73-year-old reality television star gave an update on his medical condition and how it's shaping his new perspective on life and love. "I feel great," he shared on the "Bachelor Happy Hour" podcast. He explained that his diagnosis "makes life exciting, because you kind of in the back of your head feel like you've got a lot of living to do and you don't know how long you have to do it, so don't turn down anything," he remarked. "And so, in a way, it's really a good thing." The retired restaurateur continued to open up about his cancer diagnosis and said, "I mean this sincerely, from the time I got this diagnosis, it's a privilege to live like you're dying," Turner said. "I don't turn down anything. I feel like I'm more open to emotions. I'm more open to experiences." Turner also discussed his health more directly, saying, "Until I have any symptoms, there's no treatment. So, I go frequently for blood tests. I'm on, like, a six-month schedule now." "I feel optimistic because the doctor has said, 'Well, when you turn 75, we're going to have to go three-month increments.' So, it's telling me that at least he expects me to live another couple of years to get to that. But the bottom line is I feel really good." Last year, Turner announced that he was diagnosed with bone marrow cancer in March, which he said greatly impacted his decision to get a divorce from "The Golden Bachelor" winner Theresa Nist. Turner was diagnosed with Waldenstrom macroglobulinemia, which, according to the Mayo Clinic, "is a type of cancer that begins in the white blood cells. Waldenstrom macroglobulinemia is considered a type of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma." On a more personal note, Turner said he's dating someone new, although he noted he wants to be respectful toward his ex after their divorce. "At this point, it's going well, but I don't wanna say too much and jinx it. And I'm trying to respectfully get to a point where there's an acceptable amount of time from my divorce," he continued. "Maybe that's an old-fashioned thought, you know, maybe it doesn't matter as much as I think it does, but to be respectful, I kind of want to slow roll this," While he hasn't gone public with the new relationship, he revealed elsewhere in the interview that his outlook on life has shifted dramatically since receiving the news of his illness. "The person I'm dating will say, 'Do you want to go do-' And before she even gets out the rest of the sentence, I will say yes," Turner said. "So I'm in on everything." "The Golden Bachelor" alum also shared how his cancer diagnosis has impacted his family. "They're doing pretty good. It's not like it's talked about a lot. I think they understand the baseline of, 'as long as dad says he's feeling fine, not having any of those symptoms, we're just going to go on like everything's normal.'" Turner raised two daughters with his late wife. He additionally has two granddaughters.
