NLC India's NUPPL successfully synchronizes Unit-2 of Ghatampur Thermal Power Project
By Aman Shukla Published on July 20, 2025, 11:49 IST Neyveli Uttar Pradesh Power Limited (NUPPL), the joint venture between NLC India Limited and UPRVUNL, has achieved a major milestone by successfully completing the 'TG Rolling & Synchronization' of Unit-2 (660 MW) at the 1,980 MW Ghatampur Thermal Power Project. The unit was synchronized with the 765 kV grid at 00:05 AM today, ahead of schedule and in one smooth go following the steam blowing process. This achievement brings NUPPL a step closer to the Commercial Operation Declaration (COD). Unit-1 of the project has been operational since December 2024, and now with Unit-2 synchronized, focus shifts to Unit-3, which is expected to be commissioned in FY 2025–26. Located in Kanpur Nagar district, Uttar Pradesh, the Ghatampur project features three supercritical 660 MW units. It will supply over 1,480 MW to Uttar Pradesh and nearly 493 MW to Assam, making it a key power contributor in North and Northeast India. The plant is backed by its own coal supply from the Pachwara South Coal Block in Jharkhand, ensuring steady fuel availability. Designed with modern technology, the plant incorporates FGD and SCR systems for emission control and follows a Zero Liquid Discharge policy—reflecting NUPPL's strong environmental commitment. PM inaugurates underground section of Kanpur metro
KANPUR : Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for 15 mega development projects worth over Rs 47,600 crore in Kanpur. Modi inaugurated the new underground section of the Kanpur metro rail project worth over Rs 2,120 crore from Chunniganj to Kanpur Central. This section includes five new underground stations -- Chunniganj, Bada Chauraha, Naveen Market, Nayaganj and Kanpur Central. It will include 14 planned stations with five new underground stations integrating key city landmarks and commercial hubs into the metro network. Additionally, he also inaugurated road widening and strengthening work of GT Road. With this extension, important city landmarks such as Lal Imli, Z Square Mall, Green Park Stadium, Parade Ground, Book Market and Somdutt Plaza will be directly connected via metro. Currently, nine stations are operational from IIT Kanpur to Motijheel. The new section will make metro travel in the city more convenient, faster and safer, according to a statement. The prime minister laid the foundation stone and inaugurated multiple development projects aimed at boosting the region's infrastructure and connectivity. In order to boost power generation capacity in the region, multiple projects will be undertaken. Modi laid the foundation stone of a 220 kV substation in Sector 28 at Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA), Gautam Buddh Nagar to meet the growing energy demands of the region. He also inaugurated 132 kV substations worth over Rs 320 crore at Ecotech-8 and Ecotech-10 in Greater Noida. He inaugurated a 660-MW Panki Thermal Power Extension Project in Kanpur worth over Rs 8,300 crore enhancing Uttar Pradesh's energy capacity. He inaugurated three 660-MW units of Ghatampur Thermal Power Project worth over Rs 9,330 crore, bolstering the power supply significantly.' The prime minister also inaugurated rail over bridges over Panki Power House Railway Crossing and over Panki Dham Crossing on Panki Road at Kalyanpur Panki Mandir in Kanpur. It will support the Panki Thermal Power Extension Project's logistics by facilitating coal and oil transport while also alleviating traffic congestion for the local population. On this occasion, Modi inaugurated a 40 MLD (million litres per day) tertiary treatment plant at Bingawan in Kanpur worth over Rs 290 crore. It will enable the reuse of treated sewage water, promoting water conservation and sustainable resource management in the region. In a major boost to road infrastructure in the region, the prime minister laid the foundation stone for widening and strengthening of Gauria Pali Marg for industrial development, and widening and strengthening of the road to connect Narwal Mode (AH-1) on Prayagraj Highway to Kanpur Defence Node (4 lane) under Defence Corridor, both in Kanpur Nagar district, which will significantly improve connectivity for the Defence Corridor, enhancing logistics and accessibility. He also distributed certificates and cheques to the beneficiaries of PM Ayushman Vay Vandana Yojna, National Livelihood Mission and PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Deputy Chief Ministers Keshav Prasad Maurya and Brajesh Pathak and other dignitaries were present on this occasion.

PM Modi inaugurates Unit I of Neyveli Uttar Pradesh Power Limited's Ghatampur Thermal Power Project
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday (May 30, 2025) dedicated Unit I of the Ghatampur Thermal Power Project in Kanpur Nagar district of Uttar Pradesh to the nation. The project, inaugurated by the Prime Minister on Friday, was developed by Neyveli Uttar Pradesh Power Limited (NUPPL), a joint venture of NLC India Limited (51%) and Uttar Pradesh Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited (UPRVUNL) (49%). According to a NLCIL press release, the project comprises three supercritical thermal power units of 660 MW each, adding up to a substantial 1,980 MW of installed capacity. This initiative aims to meet the growing electricity demand in Uttar Pradesh and other States, enhancing energy security, while aligning with the nation's commitment to sustainable and reliable power generation. The project cost is ₹21,780.94 crore, and the remaining two units of the Ghatampur Thermal Power Project are expected to be commissioned in 2025-26. A total of 998.81 hectares of land was acquired for its development. Project features According to NLCIL, the project has several advanced environmental technologies, including Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) and Flue Gas Desulphurization (FGD) technologies for reducing NOx and (SOx) emissions, respectively. The project also includes a Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) system in place to ensure no water is discharged from the plant. A total of 288 km of canal lining works are being undertaken to conserve 195 MLD of water by preventing seepage losses. The project is equipped with sophisticated monitoring devices, including Ambient Air Quality Monitoring Stations (AAQMS) and Continuous Emissions Monitoring Systems (CEMS).

The project is a flagship initiative by Neyveli Uttar Pradesh Power Ltd (NUPPL), a collaboration of NLC India Limited (51%) and UP Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited (UPRVUNL) (49%). Chairman, MD NUPPL Prasanna Kumar Motupalli stated that the project has three units of 660 MW each of which, the first operating unit, commissioned in Dec 2024, was dedicated on Friday. Remaining two units are likely to be commissioned by Dec 2025. The power purchase agreement (PPA) has been made for 1487.28 MW, i.e. 75.12% of the power generated with Uttar Pradesh and 492.72 MW, i.e. 24.88% with Assam subject to actual transfer of 20% equity share of UPRVUNL in NUPPL in favour of Assam govt. With advanced technologies like Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) and Flue Gas Desulphurisation (FGD) for reducing NOx and (SOx) emissions, respectively and zero liquid discharge (ZLD) system, the plant would play a significant role in power production in the state, he said. It also has sophisticated monitoring devices, including Ambient Air Quality Monitoring Stations (AAQMS) and Continuous Emissions Monitoring Systems (CEMS), he added. The coal-based supercritical boilers at the plant have a boiler efficiency of 88.81%, ensuring efficient energy generation. The coal stockyard capacity is designed to store 10.165 LMT of coal for 30 days of operation at full load for all three units. The plant's raw water reservoirs have a combined capacity of approximately 46 lakh cubic meters, split between two compartments. The plant features an advanced substation automation system and efficient power evacuation through a 765 kV GIS system. It also includes a captive coal block with a production capacity of 9 MTPA, ensuring uninterrupted fuel supply for long-term operations. This state-of-the-art thermal power station reflects the Ministry's unwavering commitment to enhancing power availability, promoting sustainable development, and advancing the vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat. Equipped with advanced technology and environmental safeguards, the project, is expected to generate large-scale direct/indirect employment and spur socio-economic development in the region.
