Zipper merge: MDOT podcast will discuss safety, rumble strips, construction

With construction underway on Michigan roads, it's a certainty you'll need to merge down to one lane at some point: State officials are urging drivers to "zipper" merge, a method to navigate congested highway work zones. The Michigan Department of Transportation recommends the zipper merge amid construction, allowing drivers to use both lanes as long as possible and then take turns merging into one lane. State transportation officials on this week's Talking Michigan Transportation podcast, will discuss zipper merging during a conversation about efforts engineers take to balance mobility and safety during active road work. Lindsey Renner, division administrator for Construction Field Services at MDOT and a former supervisor of the Work Zone Safety section, also will explain the challenges involved and discuss innovative methods such as rumble strips, speed trailers and law enforcement employing a "Ghost Rider" program to identify distracted drivers. Here's what to know. The Talking Michigan Transportation podcast features conversations with transportation experts inside and outside MDOT and will touch on anything and everything related to mobility, including rail, transit and the development of connected and automated vehicles. You can listen to the current and past podcast episodes online. A zipper merge is when traffic merges into one lane on a road, alternating to use one lane through construction. If you're entering a zipper merge on the road, look for signs advising drivers to use both lanes take turns, MDOT said. MDOT uses the zipper merge in construction zones where there is a bottleneck, typically on roads in congested, urban areas, the department says. It's important for drivers to follow instructions on signs and treat other drivers with respect to make the process safe and effective, MDOT says. Drivers should never block lanes or try to control the flow of traffic during a zipper merge. The Michigan State Police have recommended the process numerous times. "When approaching a construction zone in which a lane is reduced, remember to use the zipper merge. To keep traffic moving, drivers should use both lanes, with drivers taking turns alternating into the open lane," MSP said in a 2022 post on X. Law enforcement officials from the Michigan State Police patrol for distracted drivers in unmarked vehicles. The initiative uses unmarked spotter cars with a law enforcement officer in the passenger seat monitoring for distracted drivers. Once spotted, a visible law enforcement unit is radioed in to conduct a traffic stop. 'Driver inattention is the leading factor in most crashes and near crashes," said 1st Lt. Mike Shaw, public information officer at the Metro Detroit Michigan State Police, in a post on X. "Distracted drivers are a threat to themselves, their passengers, and anyone else on the road to include pedestrians and bicyclists." Ryan Gosling Reportedly Eyed to Play Ghost Rider in Marvel's AVENGERS

Could Ryan Gosling be taking on the role of the Spirit of Vengeance in the MCU? According to a new rumor, Marvel Studios may be looking at casting the Barbie and The Fall Guy star in the role of Ghost Rider in Avengers: Doomsday . While nothing has been confirmed by Marvel, the report has MCU fans revving their engines. The report comes from scooper @MyTimeToShineHello on X, claiming Marvel wants Gosling to suit up as the iconic flame-headed antihero. Industry insider Jeff Sneider previously said: 'I am hearing Ghost Rider is going to be in Doomsday.' He added, 'This is a search,' clarifying that Nicolas Cage, who played Johnny Blaze in the early 2000s films, is not part of the plan. Sneider didn't confirm which version of Ghost Rider might show up in the film, but he did acknowledge that Johnny Blaze is the most recognizable incarnation. His co-host John Rocha chimed in with a reminder that the Marvel Universe has multiple Ghost Riders, including Danny Ketch, Alejandra Jones, and Robbie Reyes, who was portrayed by Gabriel Luna in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.. Even Sam Elliott took a crack at it, playing Carter Slade in the 2007 Ghost Rider movie. Gosling himself has previously voiced interest in the role. While promoting The Fall Guy , he said, 'I told Josh I would like to play Ghost Rider.' That 'Josh' was likely Josh Horowitz, host of MTV's Happy Sad Confused podcast, where the quote originated. Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige also weighed in at the time, saying, 'Ryan is amazing. I'd love to find a place for him in the MCU' (via Variety). Gosling added, 'I would love to, it would be amazing.' Of course, there's the matter of scheduling. Gosling is also reportedly set to star in Star Wars: Starfighter , which could complicate things. But with Avengers: Doomsday now pushed to December 18, 2026, there's a solid window for Marvel to make this happen, especially if they want him to stick around for Avengers: Secret Wars in 2027. The timing also lines up with rumors of a Midnight Sons project, which would potentially team up Ghost Rider with Blade and Moon Knight in a darker corner of the MCU. This lineup could finally bring the supernatural squad to life on the big screen. What do you think about the possibility of seeing Gosling in the role of Ghost Rider?

The Russo Brothers Reportedly Casting New Ghost Rider for AVENGERS

It was recently reported that Marvel Studios has pushed back the release dates for both Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars . The delay stings for fans, but there's a silver lining with more time for Joe and Anthony Russo to craft a great film, with the kind of colossal chaos they pulled off with Infinity War and Endgame . And as it turns out, they might be using that time to bring some literal hellfire into the MCU. On a recent episode of The Hot Mic podcast, insider Jeff Sneider dropped a flame-worthy tidbit: "I have heard this week that Marvel is casting the role of Ghost Rider. That's for Doomsday. I'm hearing that Ghost Rider is going to be in Doomsday." If this is true, I love that Ghost Rider is being summoned for the Avengers' next big story. But Sneider clarified this won't be a nostalgic revival. He said that this is the MCU's Ghost Rider, not the return of Nicolas Cage as the Johnny Blaze. It's worth noting that Ghost Rider has been circling Marvel's theatrical plans for a while. Rumors once suggested he'd appear in Spider-Man: Brand New Day , which was originally set to debut between Doomsday and Secret Wars . Casting speculation is also in full swing, with Ryan Gosling. Back in 2023, during press for The Fall Guy , Horowitz asked Gosling if he'd be interested in donning the flaming skull. The actor responded: 'This was a magical moment. I told Josh I would like to play Ghost Rider. He found Kevin Feige, corners him, does an interview with him. When he says, 'I would like this,' all the lights go off.' When pressed again, Gosling said: 'I don't know.' To co-star Emily Blunt, who doubted he'd go full superhero, Gosling said: 'I would love to, it would be amazing. Come be in Ghost Rider.' At this point, there's no official word on who the Russos are looking at casting, but I imagine they are looking to go big. Whether it's Gosling or someone else, the inclusion of Ghost Rider in the film is going to be cool and If it's true, I'm curious to see how they utilize him in the story.
