Roma nearing move for Hellas Verona's Daniele Ghilardi

Serie A giants Roma are making key progress in a move for Hellas Verona's Daniele Ghilardi. La Gazzetta dello Sport claim that with Evan Ferguson and Neil El Aynaoui sealed, Roma are working to sign a centre-back and negotiations with Verona have progressed quite quickly. Ghilardi has agreed to sign a five-year deal with Gian Piero Gasperini's side and his willingness is proving key in the transfer. Ricky Massara has beaten competition from Real Betis in the chase for the Italian already, with Verona looking at a fee of €12 million and they are open to an obligation to buy. Roma have come very close to their demands and made a new offer late last night and an agreement can be reached soon. Gian Piero Gasperini has been left surprised by the defender's performances at the U21s European Championships, with Ghilardi having been excluded from Verona's pre-season game yesterday. A much-needed fresh start for Ferguson?

When an 18-year-old Evan Ferguson scored his first professional hat-trick in September 2023 it appeared he was destined to join the Premier League's Irishman scored with three of his four shots in Brighton's 3-1 win over Newcastle to earn effusive praise. Alan Shearer labelled him a "special talent" while another goalscoring great Ian Wright highlighted his exceptional movement during his Match of the Day analysis that treble took his Premier League total to 10 goals and only three players have ever bettered that tally prior to their 19th birthday; one was former Everton poacher Francis Jeffers and the other two rank among England's finest ever forwards: But since that eye-catching moment the now 20-year-old has netted only three more times in 44 top-flight appearances and last season he mustered just three shots on target, scoring once: Ferguson's notable decline has been put down to injuries, a loss of confidence and the form of others. The signing of Greek forwards Charalampos Kostoulas and Stefanos Tzimas has pushed him further down the pecking order on the south there is still plenty of time for him to fulfil his undoubted potential and a move to Roma to play under one of Europe's most prized coaches in Gian Piero Gasperini could be just the tonic. The Italian tactician got a tune out of strikers Rasmus Hojlund and Mateo Retegui at his former club Atalanta, and the 67-year-old has a proven track record of developing young players.

Evan Ferguson finalising season-long loan move to Roma

EVAN FERGUSON IS set to join Roma on a season-long loan from Brighton. The 42 understands that the Serie A club have also agreed an option to buy the Republic of Ireland international on a permanent basis for €40 million as part of the deal. There are still details to be finalised before the move is confirmed but the 20-year-old is expected to arrive in Italy this evening. Advertisement While there was interest from other clubs in Serie A, as well as in Germany, the Premier League, and English Championship, it's believed the selling point of the move is the chance to work under experienced head coach Gian Piero Gasperini. A disappointing loan to West Ham during the second half of last season was the latest frustrating spell at club level for Ferguson, following knee and ankle injuries that have had to be overcome. The Meath native could be confirmed as a Roma player later tonight or tomorrow morning barring any last-minute hitches with the deal. Elsewhere, Liverpool are closing in on a deal to sign striker Hugo Ekitike from Eintracht Frankfurt, the PA news agency understands. Claims of a bid of €90million (£78m) being accepted for the Frenchman appear to be wide of the mark, with the two clubs still in negotiations over the fee and the structure of any transfer. But it is understood Liverpool are increasingly confident an agreement will soon be struck, with personal terms already reached with the 23-year-old, who has made a splash in the Bundesliga after last year's switch from Paris St Germain. Meanwhile, in the League of Ireland, Galway United have confirmed that top scorer Moses Dyer has left the club to join Phnom Penh Crown in Cambodia. Sligo Rovers have also reached an agreement with NIFL side Cliftonville for the transfer of full back Sean Stewart to the Showgrounds on an 18-month deal.
