Creditable PWBA Tour debut for Gillian

KUALA LUMPUR: Bowler Gillian Lim wrapped up her PWBA Tour debut season on a high, leading Malaysia's challenge at the Tour Championship despite narrowly missing out on the stepladder finals. The 26-year-old Sarawakian placed eighth in the 24-player standings with a three-block total of 5,725 pinfalls at ABC Gates Bowl in New York. This marked her fourth top-10 finish of the season after the Rock 'n' Roll Open (fifth), Waterloo Open (ninth) and US Women's Open (seventh). She pocketed US$6,250 (RM26,460) for her efforts. Natasha Roslan finished 11th on 5,664 to earn US$4,200, while defending champion Sin Li Jane — last year's winner — could only manage 23rd with 5,258, taking home US$2,550. The top five who advanced to Tuesday's stepladder finals were Shannon Pluhowsky (6,053), England's Verity Crawley (5,965), Lauren Russo (5,923), Jordan Snodgrass (5,908) and Stephanie Zavala (5,880). The champion will walk away with the US$50,000 top prize. Gillian's strong finish capped a breakthrough year in which she became the first Malaysian to be named PWBA Rookie of the Year and the first international winner since Canada's Valerie Bercier in 2019. Her season also included two other top 15 outings, 15th at the Topeka Open and 13th at the Rochester Open.

Gillian makes history as PWBA Rookie of Year

Gillian proudly displays the PWBA Rookie of the Year trophy. KUCHING (Aug 11): The Sarawak bowling fraternity is beaming with pride as local sensation Gillian Lim has etched her name in sports history by winning the 2025 Professional Women's Bowling Association (PWBA) Rookie of the Year Award. She is the first Malaysian to be awarded this prestigious global accolade. Gillian finished as the standout rookie of the season for leading all rookies in PWBA ranking points, earnings and top-12 tournament finishes. The 26-year-old amassed 37,230 points far ahead of Canadian Jade Cote (23,615) and American Kirsten Moore (17,645) to establish herself as one of the brightest new talents on the world stage. Her debut season in the pro circuit was marked by consistent and world-class performances across major tournaments in the US including the PWBA Go Bowling Topeka Open, USBC Queens, PWBA Summer Series – Cleveland, PWBA Bowlers Journal Waterloo Open, US Women's Open and PWBA Tour Championship Week. Only four bowlers from outside the US have received this annual top rookie award. Gillian as the first Malaysian to join this elite list helps to cast a global spotlight on Sarawak's bowling excellence. Born and raised in Miri, Gillian's love for bowling began at just eight years old while studying at SK St Joseph and SMK St Joseph Miri. She graduated from Sunway College and became a rising star in the Amateur Bowling (Tenpin) Association of Sarawak (ABAS) ranks, representing the state in Sukma and other national championships. Her national career took off when she joined the national youth team in 2008. She was promoted to the Podium Programme in 2020 where she continued to shine as a core member of the Malaysian national team. 'This is not just my win — it's a win for Sarawak and Malaysia. I hope my journey inspires young bowlers back home to dream big and work hard, because nothing is impossible,' she told ABAS in an interview. Sarawak officials view Gillian's latest triumph as the result of long years of discipline, determination and unwavering passion for the sport. She stands as proof that local athletes have the talent, spirit and resilience to make their mark on the global stage. bowling Gillian Lim Siew Giok Rookie of the Year

Spiced-up Gillian raves about enriching experience of touring the US

PETALING JAYA: The first thing that national bowler Gillian Lim (pic) will do after returning home from the United States is to enjoy 'Ayam Gepuk' – a dish featuring tender chicken marinated in spices. 'I missed all the spicy food during my stay in the US. I will go for Ayam Gepuk for sure,' said Gillian, who spent about two months competing in several Professional Women Bowling Association (PWBA) tournaments.

Gillian within striking distance of US Open stepladder finals

KUALA LUMPUR: Bowler Gillian Lim remained firmly in contention for a spot in the stepladder finals at the US Women's Open after delivering a solid performance in the first round of match play in Lincoln, Nebraska. The 26-year-old sits seventh overall with a 40-game total of 8,204 pinfalls, just 46 pins shy of the current top-five cut heading into the final two match play rounds. Gillian, who picked up five wins from eight matches on Sunday, will continue to carry Malaysia's hopes alongside Natasha Roslan, who is 12th with 8,141 pinfalls and four match wins. Each win awards a 30-pin bonus, keeping both bowlers in the frame for a late push. The top five after 56 games will qualify for Tuesday's televised stepladder finals at Sun Valley Lanes. "It was a tough oiling pattern today," said Gillian. "Probably ball changes and line adjustments need to be fast." Unlike regular assignments with the national team, Gillian is navigating the PWBA Tour on her own, but she credited her equipment team for their on-site support. "We've got ball representatives here with us. I'm with MOTIV, so they have specialists assigned to support professional bowlers during competitions like this," she explained. "They help us with equipment, choosing the right ball for the lane condition, and also suggest where to play on the lane and when to make adjustments." American Maryssa Carey leads the standings with 8,604, followed by Colombia's Rocio Restrepo (8,388), Lauren Russo (8,315), Jordan Snodgrass (8,299) and New Hui Fen of Singapore (8,250). Earlier in the day, both Gillian and Natasha had advanced to the 24-woman match play round after finishing fourth and eighth respectively in the fourth and final qualifying block. However, it was the end of the road for defending champion Sin Li Jane, who fell short in 30th place, while Nora Lyana Nastasia Norkamal concluded her campaign in 32nd.
