A glimpse of changing Bihar, flyers feel as new terminal at Patna airport begins operations
Patna: Passengers travelling to and from Bengaluru were the first to use the state-of-the-art new terminal building of Jayprakash Narayan International Airport in Patna, which began its operations on Tuesday after its inauguration by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on May 29. Among the passengers on Day 1 was Union minister Giriraj Singh who said, "I got the opportunity to fly as the first passenger from the newly built terminal of the Patna airport. This was not just a journey but a glimpse of the changing Bihar, which is modern, and full of convenience and confidence," he said. Also among the Day-1 passengers was BJP MP Sanjay Jaiswal. "I am among the fortunate flyers travelling from the new terminal on its first day of operation. When I used to see airports in other states and compared them to Patna airport, I felt we were lagging behind. However, with the blessings of the PM, not only has Patna airport has become world-class, the foundation for a second airport has also been laid, making Patna the third city in the country to have two airports," he said. Talking to the reporters outside the terminal building, the MP added he was extremely grateful to the Airports Authority of India and its architects for the beautiful design. "We always felt there should be more flights from here, and now 75 flights will operate, providing customers with cheaper ticket rates," he said. Many people inside the terminal were seen taking photos and selfies with beautiful murals and Mithila paintings like that of Chhath festivities, Chanakya, Lord Buddha, Mahavira and the cradle of civilisation. A cultural programme was held in the morning at the entry gate, soon after it was opened for the flyers. A grand welcome was given to the passengers at the entrance gate of the new terminal with application of sandalwood tilak on their foreheads and by sprinkling rose water. Airport director Krishna Mohan Nehra said the flyers were happy with the grand welcome, which was followed by the cultural event. The first flight between Bengaluru and Patna landed here at 7.14am with around 170 passengers. The flight 6E-5127 departed at 8.09am for Bengaluru. The airport is now operating 98 flights, including 49 arrivals and 49 departures, a day. Special security arrangements have been made at the Patna airport, keeping in mind the safety of passengers. "About 20 jawans of Patna police have been deployed at the entry and exit gates for the next 10 days," Patna senior superintendent of police (SSP) Avakash Kumar said. Apart from this, 20 additional traffic police personnel are also being deployed. The airport police station in charge has been ordered to regularly patrol the entire area. A flyer, Alok, however, noted some disorganisation and significant crowding at security checks on the terminal's opening day, suggesting teething issues as the operations began. Another flyer, Gaurav Mehta, who was travelling to Mumbai, said there was a minor glitch, as the airlines seemed confused with the new set-up. "DigiYatra (contactless travel gate) was not functioning till afternoon, which caused minor chaos at the security gate. Overall, the experience is good, and I believe things will settle with time," he said. "The new terminal is much bigger, and there is a lot of space in the security hold area. The interior design of the building looks beautiful," Priyanka Kashyap, another traveller flying to Delhi, said. The new building features five aerobridges (of which one is operational initially), 64 check-in counters, five conveyor belts, 13 boarding gates, eight inline XBIS machines, seven hand baggage scanning machines in the security hold area with ATRS and a multi-level car parking for 1,100 vehicles among other facilities. It has the capacity to accommodate one crore passengers annually and 3,000 at peak time. Union Minister favours consumers' boycott of Turkish apples
Union Minister of Textiles Giriraj Singh has strongly urged Indian consumers to boycott Turkish apples, citing the country's support to Pakistan during Operation Sindoor. 'Turkey supports enemy nations, so if people have decided not to eat Turkish apples and instead choose Himachal apples, it's the right decision,' said the minister while addressing the media during his visit to Himachal Pradesh. Singh inaugurated the Bob Organics organic fertiliser production unit at Byada in Panchrukhi near Palampur on Saturday. He also interacted with students from the Institute of Himalayan Bioresource Technology (IHBT), gaining insights into the functioning and innovation behind the plant. Later, the minister visited a traditional pottery-making institute in Andretta, where he tried his hand at shaping clay pots. He appealed to residents to take pride in this ancient art and to expand it as a means of sustainable livelihood. 'This is a part of the Ministry of Textiles. Pottery is a traditional craft that has cultural and economic value,' he said. Earlier on Wednesday, Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Sukhu urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to double the import duty on apples from the current 50 per cent to discourage their import from Turkey and safeguard the interests of the state's fruit growers. The CM urged that quantitative restrictions should also be imposed on imported apples. In a letter to the Prime Minister, CM Sukhu said Himachal Pradesh is known as the 'apple bowl' of the country and is famous for producing delicious varieties of the fruit. The apple is the prime cash crop of the state and generates an income of about Rs 4,500 crore annually. CM Sukhu said that at present, apples are being imported from nearly 31 countries, and about 5.19 lakh metric tons were imported in 2024, an increase of 500 times compared to 1,100 metric tons imported in 1998. The Chief Minister said apples from Turkey have been flooding the Indian markets in recent years, which has posed a great threat to the apple growers of the country. When asked about Congress opposing India's foreign outreach, Giriraj Singh stated that an all-party delegation is visiting 33 countries to counter false narratives spread by Pakistan. 'This is not new. In 1994, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, along with Manmohan Singh and Salman Khurshid, had gone to the UN to fight similar misinformation. If Congress doesn't understand this and feels frustrated, what can I do?' he said.

Jairam Ramesh makes baseless statements: Giriraj Singh slams Congress
New Delhi: Union Minister Giriraj Singh has hit back at Congress leader Jairam Ramesh over his criticism of the Centre's multi-party global outreach on counter-terrorism, stating that leaders like him only see politics in the anti-terror effort and make baseless statements. Speaking to IANS, Giriraj Singh stated, 'Whether it is Jairam Ramesh, Kharge ji, or Rahul Gandhi, commenting on them is not appropriate because they make baseless statements. Today, Pakistan is being exposed across the world, and that is exactly what needs to be done. If Jairam Ramesh sees politics in this effort, then so be it.' He reiterated the Indian government's commitment to countering terrorism, referencing ongoing efforts like Operation Sindoor. The Minister noted, 'Pakistan is a terrorist state. It shelters and supports terrorism. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has made it clear, the goal is to eliminate terrorism and terrorists. Operation Sindoor is part of that mission. It hasn't stopped yet.' Highlighting Pakistan's aggression, Singh added, 'When Pakistan attacks civilian areas, and then cries before the world, we have the right to tell the truth globally, that we are targeting terrorism, not civilians.' On Sunday, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh, talking about the names of MPs selected for the delegations, said it was "cheap politics" and the government was indulging in 'politicisation' by not including all the names recommended by the Opposition for the all-party parliamentary delegation. He also took a shot at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, accusing him of abusing the Congress on foreign soil and then taking the party's help to put points across to the same nations. Giriraj Singh also responded sharply to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's past remarks on Bangladeshi infiltrators, accusing her of prioritising vote-bank politics over national security. 'Mamata Didi boldly says, 'Who will remove Bangladeshi infiltrators while I'm here?' Her idea of nationalism seems tied to her vote bank. Her politics revolves around protecting infiltrators, and that's the extent of it,' he said.
