Govt weaving higher income plan for handloom sector

New Delhi: Union Textiles Minister Giriraj Singh on Thursday said all 797 handloom clusters across the country need to be connected with entrepreneurs to expand the reach of such products in both domestic as well as global markets. Addressing a National Handloom Day event, the minister said that linking weavers with entrepreneurs would help raise their annual income to Rs10 lakh. He also informed that 100 handloom and handicraft artisans have been onboarded to an e-platform to increase the global reach of handloom products. 'Today, 100 artisans have been onboarded onto an e-platform for Indian handloom products to reach overseas. I hope in the coming days, we will connect lakhs of handloom weavers. It is my wish and PM Modi's direction that their average annual income be at least Rs8-10 lakh,' Singh said at the Handloom Day function. It was not immediately officially clear why President Draupadi Murmu did not attend the function, but sources said she was unwell. The minister also expressed the desire for a startup programme to be launched to invite proposals on how the handloom technology can be upgraded to increase its production. 'I want all the 797 clusters in the country to be connected to entrepreneurs so that handloom products can reach domestic as well as overseas markets in large numbers,' Singh said. Addressing the handloom workers, the minister said, 'Your designs are stolen by foreign designers and converted into their own designs. I am making arrangements through my department to ensure that your designs are not stolen by anyone, by connecting them (the designs) to Artificial Intelligence and Blockchain technology'.

Electricity, wood usage, chemical inputs top sources of carbon footprint in India's handlooms

Electricity consumption, wood usage, chemicals inputs are the top sources of carbon footprint in India's handloom sector, an official report released Wednesday showed. Prepared by the ministry and Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi, the report showed that improving energy efficiency, transitioning to renewable electricity sources and substituting chemical use in dyeing and finishing can help cut emissions and help increase exports of sustainable handloom products from India in the future. The report titled 'Carbon Footprint Assessment in the Indian Handloom Sector' maps the carbon footprint of 11 products including Banarasi Saree, Cotton Bedsheet, Floor Mat and Kullu Shawl. "Real progress in sustainability requires measuring the carbon impact at every stage of textile production. Out of the 17 parameters set by the United Nations for its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), by working on this alone, we are making efforts in the direction of achieving 10 out of the 17 SDG goals,' said textiles minister Giriraj Singh. The report is part of an initiative aimed at promoting carbon trading in the sector to cut emissions, earn revenue, and help handloom artisans benefit financially from green practices in the future. As per the report, the carbon footprint analysis for Banarasi silk saree manufacturing reveals that electricity consumption is overwhelmingly the primary contributor, accounting for 85% of total emissions, followed by chemicals including dyes and finishing agents, making up the next largest share at 8.5%. In case of natural Tussar silk dress material, electricity consumption is the dominant source of emissions followed by soap while for the Kullu shawls, the top sources are electricity consumption and chemical inputs as the primary sources of emissions, followed by yarn waste. Balramapuram Saree, Tangail Saree, Ikat Saree, Silk Dyeing Process, Ashawali Saree, Tasar Silk and Dharmavaram Saree are the other products mapped in the report. 'Now the idea is basically to make it sellable at some point of time that the carbon trading can be done, as far as this is concerned. Apart from the carbon trading part of it, a more sustainable product would find better markets, higher costs, and thus empower the handloom industry workers,' said textiles secretary Neelam Shami Rao. NDA will form govt in Bihar under leadership of Nitish Kumar: Giriraj Singh

Exuding confidence over the outcome of the upcoming Assembly elections in Bihar, Union Minister Giriraj Singh on Sunday said that the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) will form the government here under the leadership of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. "Today, I can say with confidence that the next government in Bihar will be formed by the NDA under the leadership of Nitish Kumar and PM Modi," Giriraj Singh told reporters. Union Minister applauded the work done under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and mentioned that 17 bridges have been constructed over Bihar's Ganga river since 2014. Ever since Narendra Modi became the Prime Minister, 17 bridges have been built over the Ganga river in Bihar. Not only that, today there is no part in Bihar where there are no proper roads. The Modi government is the one which gave development to Bihar. It is only under the NDA government that people in Bihar have been employed, he said. The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Saturday said that it will double the remuneration for Booth Level Officers (BLOs), enhance remuneration for BLO Supervisors and give honorarium to Electoral Registration Officers (EROs) and Assistant Electoral Registration Officers (AEROs). "Pure electoral rolls are the bedrock of democracy. The electoral roll machinery, consisting of Electoral Registration Officers (EROs), Assistant Electoral Registration Officers (AEROs), BLO Supervisors and Booth Level Officers (BLOs), do a lot of hard work and play a pivotal role in preparation of impartial and transparent electoral rolls. The Commission has therefore, decided to double the annual remuneration for BLOs & also enhanced the remuneration of BLO Supervisors involved in the preparation and revision of electoral rolls" it said in a press release. The apex poll body's press statement also mentioned that the last such revision was done in 2015 and the honorarium has been provided for EROs and AEROs for the first time. Textile ministry likely to meet industry players next week over US tariffs

Union Textiles Minister Giriraj Singh will meet industry stakeholders next week to deliberate upon the potential impact of US President Donald Trump's announcement to impose a 25 per cent tariff on India and seek their views on the issue, according to sources. The US is India's largest market for textile and apparel exports, accounting for about 25 per cent of the country's total outbound shipment from the sector. Discussions in the meeting will also revolve around realising opportunities arising for India's textile sector from the UK-India FTA, which was signed last month, as the government and industry want to leave no stone unturned to achieve the textile export target of USD 100 billion by 2030, and mitigate the potential impact of the US tariff announcement, sources told PTI. While it would be "premature" to talk about any measures being considered to support domestic textile exporters in light of the US announcement, they said, the government wants to seek the industry's feedback at this juncture and discuss the challenges and opportunities in terms of the UK-India FTA and other markets with untapped potential. "We are continuously engaging with the industry. The minister has asked for a meeting. We will be talking to different players, the major garment export firms from India. Discussions will also revolve around realising opportunities arising for the textile sector from the UK-India FTA," according to sources. "The industry has set a target of USD 100 billion by 2030, which it is keen to achieve. So, they are looking at a variety of products and also at different markets. They are looking at strengthening and consolidating the existing markets. The government has also announced the Export Promotion Mission." The US on Friday slapped a 25 per cent tariff on India, potentially impacting about half of the USD 86 billion Indian exports to America, while the other half, including pharmaceuticals, electronics, and petroleum products, continued to be exempted from the levy. The sectors, which would bear the brunt of 25 per cent duty include textiles/ clothing (10.3 billion), gems and jewellery (12 billion), shrimp (USD 2.24 billion), leather and footwear (USD 1.18 billion), animal products (USD 2 billion), chemicals (2.34 billion), and electrical and mechanical machinery (about USD 9 billion).
