Russia Faces Another Rain Track Explosion; Belgorod Governor Survived By A Whisker

A diesel locomotive derailed in Russia's Belgorod region after an explosive device damaged the tracks, in what officials describe as an act of sabotage. The attack comes amid a wave of similar incidents across Russian border regions, including deadly strikes in Bryansk and Kursk that killed seven and injured over 100. Moscow has blamed Ukraine for orchestrating these rail bombings, calling them terrorist acts aimed at destabilizing infrastructure and disrupting peace talks. Governor Gladkov confirmed no casualties in the Belgorod blast, but rail traffic was temporarily halted. President Putin condemned the sabotage as a direct attempt to undermine negotiations and provoke further conflict.#belgorod #RailwaySabotage #ukraine #russia #putin #zelensky

Damage reported after train runs over explosive device in Russia's Belgorod Oblast, governor claims

Editor's note: This is a developing story and is being updated. A rail line was damaged in Russia's Belgorod Oblast on May 25 after a cargo train ran over an explosive device planted underneath the tracks, regional governor Vyacheslav Gladkov claimed. Following an explosion in the Novooskolsky district, the railway's overhead contact line damaged, Gladkov said. Train traffic has been suspended as a result of the incident. Gladkov claimed that no one was injured in the alleged attack. The full extent of the damage was not immediately available, as emergency crews are assessing the damage. Ukraine's military has not commented on the alleged explosion. The Kyiv Independent cannot verify claims made by Russian officials. Ukraine's intelligence agencies as well as Ukrainian partisan movements have previously been involved in sabotage attacks on Russian railways, disrupting the transport of military cargo toward the front line. Ukraine's Military Intelligence Agency (HUR) said Ukrainian drone operators destroyed three Russian fuel tanks during a strike on a train moving through occupied areas of Zaporizhzhia Oblast on May 24. Ukraine's military currently has a limited presence in Belgorod Oblast, marking a second incursion into Russian territory, following a successful Kursk incursion in August 2024. Russia's Belgorod governor accuses locals of faking war damage to receive compensation from the state

Residents in Russia's Belgorod Oblast are deliberately exposing their property to Ukrainian drone strikes to claim government compensation, Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov said during a May 12 regional government meeting. "I myself have heard relatives talking: our village is being attacked, let's roll the car out of the garage, maybe they will shell it — at least we will get money. The car is old, we can't sell it," Gladkov said. Russia's Belgorod Oblast, which borders Ukraine's Sumy, Kharkiv, and Luhansk oblasts, is regularly used as a staging area for Russian attacks on Ukrainian territory. Russian officials have accused Ukraine of launching repeated strikes on Belgorod Oblast and the city of Belgorod since the war began. According to the governor, some local residents have started mass requests for state-funded resettlement, citing alleged fears of ongoing attacks to secure new housing. "Or else the war will end and we will still be living in old houses," Gladkov said, summarizing the alleged logic of those applying for relocation. "It is not one, not two, and not three settlements where we see that groups are beginning to form, which are trying to be led by individual residents and try to get state aid, in fact having no grounds for it," he said. By the end of 2024, Belgorod authorities had paid 15.1 billion rubles ($187 million) in compensation to residents who lost property due to attacks, supporting over 2,500 families, Gladkov claimed in January. President Volodymyr Zelensky said on April 7 that Ukrainian troops are present in Belgorod Oblast. Ukrainian officials have said the move aimed to force Russia to divert resources from eastern Ukraine Read also: 'Ready for all options' — Ukraine gears up for possible Zelensky, Putin talks We've been working hard to bring you independent, locally-sourced news from Ukraine. Ukrainian drone strikes Russian Orthodox church

A Ukrainian drone has targeted a Russian Orthodox church in Belgorod Region, setting fire to the building, the local governor, Vyacheslav Gladkov, has reported. Since the escalation of the conflict between Moscow and Kiev in February 2022, the Russian border region has repeatedly come under artillery and mortar fire, as well as UAV attacks, by Ukrainian forces. In a post on his Telegram channel on Saturday, Gladkov wrote that the 'the enemy is striking our holy sites again – an enemy drone has attacked Saint George Church in the village of Tolokonnoye,' not far from Belgorod. According to the official, the building's domes caught fire as a result of the incident. The governor thanked local self-defense forces for swiftly responding to the attack and extinguishing the flames quickly, which prevented further damage to the church. In a separate post on Saturday, Gladkov estimated that over the past 24 hours, Kiev's forces have launched over 40 drones and fired nearly 150 artillery shells at multiple localities in Belgorod Region, resulting in material damage. There have been no reports of casualties. Last Thursday, the iconic New Jerusalem Orthodox church complex in the region burned down following a Ukrainian drone strike. Commenting on the incident at the time, Gladkov described it as a 'deliberate' attack and also accused the Ukrainian military of subsequently targeting the firefighters who were trying to contain the blaze. The metropolitan bishop of Belgorod Region, Ioann, similarly characterized the attack as 'intentional,' saying that Kiev's troops had deployed incendiary bombs. He also accused Ukrainian forces of targeting the first responders at the scene. The New Jerusalem complex, a wooden reproduction of biblical Jerusalem, was built in the early 2000s. In late February, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that 'it's clear that the Kiev regime doesn't shy away from anything… There's nothing sacred [for them].' He made the remarks after Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB) reported that it apprehended two suspects who had allegedly planned to assassinate Metropolitan Tikhon, the head of the Simferopol and Crimean diocese, with a bomb, presumably at the behest of the Ukrainian intelligence services. Metropolitan Tikhon is purported to be a close spiritual adviser to Russian President Vladimir Putin, though neither man has ever confirmed this.

Ukrainian drone attack kills two in Russia's Belgorod region, governor says

MOSCOW - A Ukrainian drone slammed into a car on Tuesday on a highway in Russia's border Belgorod region, killing two people and injuring three, the first of a series of attacks during the day, regional governor Vyacheslav Gladkov said. Gladkov, writing on the Telegram messaging app, later wrote that five people were injured in cars in three incidents in areas near the Ukrainian border. Drones later in the day attacked six localities in Belgorod region, Gladkov wrote. An apartment building, a house and a business were damaged, but no casualties were reported. Later in the evening, the governor of neighbouring Kursk region, Alexander Khinshtein, said drones attacked the town of Rylsk, injuring three people and damaging three apartment buildings, a private house and a kindergarten. Reuters could not independently verify any of the assertions from local officials. Russian President Vladimir Putin congratulated Russian forces last weekend on what he said was the expulsion of the last Ukrainian forces from Kursk region more than eight months after Kyiv's forces launched a cross-border incursion.
