Spain bar shootings: Who was Glasgow man Eddie Lyons Jnr?
When cocaine worth £20,000 was stolen by Lyons gang members in the summer of 2001 from a safe house in the Milton area, it put them firmly on the map - with deadly consequences. The drugs had belonged to the rival Daniel family and the theft sparked a bitter feud between the two families which rages to this day, and has escalated to shocking new heights this year. It was an indication that Lyons jnr was a leading figure in his family's criminal activities, which took in drug dealing and money laundering, with assaults and violence an ever-present threat. Incidents that year had raised the stakes even further and brought the gang feud into the national headlines. Carroll, nicknamed Gerbil after a character in the Roland the Rat television puppet show, had allegedly used a 4x4 and a tow rope to topple the headstone of Eddie Jnr's brother, Garry, who died of leukaemia in 1991 aged just eight. (Image: fatal shooting at Applerow Motors garage) The following month, in December 2006, two men in a blue Mazda pulled up outside a garage in Lambhill, in the north of Glasgow. (Image: fatal shooting at Applerow Motors garage James McDonald) (Image: fatal shooting at Applerow Motors garage Raymond Anderson,) Raymond Anderson and James McDonald put on old man face masks then walked into Applerow Motors, off busy Balmore Road, and opened fire. (Image: Michael Lyons) The owner, David Lyons, took cover but his 21-year-old nephew Michael, Eddie Jnr's cousin, was shot dead. Eddie's brother, Steven, was also injured along with another associate. The hitmen, enforcers for the Daniel clan, were convicted in 2008 of Michael Lyons' murder and sentenced to a minimum of 30 years each in prison before they can be considered for parole. Four years later Eddie jnr's father admitted at Glasgow Sheriff Court that he had racked up more than £250,000 in mortgage frauds by giving lenders fake income details. He bought property in Cumbernauld and East Kilbride by self-certifying on mortgage applications, and was ordered to hand over £75,000 after admitting the fraud. (Image: Eddie Lyons Jnr with Ross Monaghan) Eddie Jnr and his close associate Ross Monaghan later appeared at the same court but were cleared of a vicious attack on three men outside a bar in East Dunbartonshire which took place in April 2016. The trial collapsed when two of the alleged victims said they had no memory of what had happened to them. Prosecutors withdrew the charges and both Eddie Jnr and Monaghan were pictured smiling as they walked free from Glasgow Sheriff Court in 2017. The pair remained close friends and had reportedly watched the Champions League final in Monaghans Bar on Saturday night before they were shot dead at close range. It's understood Eddie Jnr, 46, had been linked to Spain for some time but had recently been back in Scotland for the funeral of his 16-year-old daughter, who had long-term health problems. Sources claimed he told associates that he didn't feel it was safe enough for him to return permanently. In the end, it transpired he was no safer more than a thousand miles away on the Costa del Sol.

Paramedic crashed into taxi while dying patient was being treated in ambulance
A paramedic collided with a taxi while medics treated a dying patient in her ambulance. Amanda Keenan, 35, was behind the wheel of the vehicle in Glasgow's Calton on September 24, 2023. Keenan and a crew were transporting a 71-year-old woman whose heart had earlier stopped from her home to Glasgow Royal Infirmary. Keenan, of Paisley, failed to give way or slow down an appropriate amount at a red light. She continued to drive while the taxi – an orange Kia Niro – moved off at a green light across from her. This resulted in the two vehicles colliding in the middle of the junction. Keenan pleaded guilty at Glasgow Sheriff Court to driving without due care or attention. Sheriff Tony Kelly deferred conviction until next week for further information to become available regarding sentencing options. The court earlier heard that the medics attended the woman's home as she had difficulty breathing. A decision was made to transfer her to hospital as the woman had gone into cardiac arrest with Keenan being the driver. Prosecutor Kirsty McKenzie said: 'CPR was being carried out in the back of the ambulance.' The blue lights and sirens were activated on the vehicle, which drove up to London Road at its junction with Arcadia Street. Ms McKenzie said: 'On approach to a red traffic signal, Keenan failed to slow down. 'She proceeded the red light without checking for emerging traffic from the driver's side. 'A taxi driver emerged from Arcadia Street, and when his lights went green, he emerged and collided with the driver's side of the ambulance.' The hearing was told that the ambulance was unable to be moved after the collision. The fiscal depute stated that there was evidence of brakes being applied by Keenan at the time, but she did not 'give way'. Neither Keenan or the taxi driver needed hospital treatment. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene. Jacqueline White, defending, told the court: 'The situation is that she was attempting to save a life. 'The woman's heart had stopped beating at the house and work that was being done to see if there was a possibility of getting her back.' It was revealed that Keenan paid a speeding fine months before the incident which was unrelated to her employment.
