New York, London, Paris: List Of Top Cities On Global Index 2025
New York and London remain the top two cities in the world for the second year running on the Global Cities Index 2025. Oxford Economics, the leading global economic advisory firm, assessed 1,000 cities on the basis of human capital, quality of life, environment, economics, and governance. They are scored on a scale of 100. The index retained eight cities from the last year, with Sydney and Boston being the new entrants in the top 10. According to Oxford Economics, New York and London are major centres for business, finance, and education. They have performed well in the areas of economy and human capital, scoring 100 and 98.5, respectively. New York has the biggest metro economy in the world, while London comes in fourth. Both cities are home to a large number of universities and corporate headquarters. The third spot was secured by Paris, with San Jose and Seattle making it to the top five for their high GDP per capita. These cities excel in quality of life. Paris ranks third for its cultural sites and high life expectancy; the other two cities have among the highest average incomes in the world, according to Oxford Economics. Paris has a score of 94.4, while San Jose and Seattle were at 94.2 and 91.8, respectively. Melbourne is in the sixth position with a score of 90.7, followed by Sydney at 90.6 and Boston, Tokyo, and San Francisco each at 90.3. Anthony Bernard Sasges, Senior Economist and lead author of the report, said, "The 2025 update of the index provides invaluable, data-driven insights for policymakers and business leaders, enabling them to unlock the potential of urban economies."

Oxford Economics has looked at lots of factors when evaluating what makes a city great for its Global Cities Index 2025, and many in the UK tick those boxes - including Cambridge and Leeds. The top UK city in the study was London which came in second place out of 100 cities, losing out to New York. The publication said that London "may fit the definition of 'Global City' more than anywhere else in the world." It called London the world's leading city for human capital due to its number of leading universities and diverse workforce. The high ranking of London isn't a surprise, but there are lots of other UK cities which also made the cut which weren't so expected. The capital of Scotland made an appearance on the list at number 57. Edinburgh received an overall score of 75.4 - it's highest rating was for environment which was 93.9 out of a possible 100. The next UK city is Bristol which came in at number 68. The city in the South West of England that's built around the River Avon and is the birthplace of street artist, Banksy, received its highest score for governance. Historic UK city undergoing huge multi-million revamp Leeds came in 83rd place, between Italy's Milan at 82, and The Hague in the Netherlands, at 84. The city in Yorkshire is known for its shopping, food and drink scene as and sporting history. Also on the list was the southern city of Cambridge where tourists enjoy punting and tours around the famous colleges. Cambridge was the 86th city on the list, receiving an overall score of 72.1 with a score of 80.4 out of 100 for quality of life for the locals. And the final UK city on the top 100 list was Manchester which came in at number 93 above the likes of Tampa and Dusseldorf. A new report ranks the top 1,000 ‘global cities'. Does Hamilton make the list?
Hamilton is the 248th greatest city in the world. That's according to a new ranking of 1,000 global cities released Thursday by Oxford Economics . The global economic advisory firm bases its Global Cities Index 2025 report on five factors — economics, quality of life, environment, governance and human capital, which includes age, education and growth of a population. According to the company, the rankings consider not only the city's economic performance, but also how well-educated it is, the well-being of its residents, the volatility of its climate, any political risks facing the city, and more. The index covers the 1,000 largest cities in the world, which are located in 163 countries. The 2025 rankings have been heavily impacted by tariffs and trade wars, according to the company. 'Trade tensions and deglobalization are causing considerable headwinds to economic growth worldwide, potentially triggering substantial shifts in supply chains and the way countries do business with each other over the coming years.' Of the 1,000 ranked cities, Hamilton ranked 457th in economics, 256th in human capital, 193rd in quality of life, 306th in environment — and 27th in governance. Hamilton's ranking placed the city just behind Toledo, Ohio and Verona, Italy — but ahead of Mexico City, Athens and New Orleans. New York, London and Paris topped the list, while Toronto was the top-ranked Canadian city at No. 20. Hamilton was the lowest ranked Canadian city in 2025.
