Chinese premier calls for forging example of openness, development cooperation with ASEAN, GCC
China is ready to work with the ASEAN and the GCC to implement the Global Civilization Initiative, promote mutual learning among civilizations and build greater consensus and momentum for peace and development, Chinese Premier Li Qiang said. KUALA LUMPUR, May 27 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Li Qiang called on China, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries to jointly forge an example in openness, development cooperation and cross-civilization integration on Tuesday. He made the remarks when addressing the inaugural ASEAN-China-GCC Summit held in Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia. China, ASEAN, and GCC countries enjoy a long history of friendly exchanges, Li said, adding that against complex changes in international landscape and a sluggish economic growth, the establishment of such a communication platform and cooperation mechanism as this trilateral summit marks a major innovation in regional economic cooperation. Through closer connectivity and cooperation, the Chinese premier said, the three sides can build a dynamic economic circle and growth pole, which carries great significance for their respective prosperity as well as for peace and development in Asia and the world. Li urged all sides to seize this historic opportunity, continuously enrich the substance of trilateral cooperation, and work together to build a model of global cooperation and development. He urged all sides to build a model in three aspects. Firstly, Li called on the three sides to create a model of cross-region openness, noting that the population and economic aggregate of China as well as countries of the ASEAN and the GCC account for approximately one quarter of the world's total. A full connection of the three markets will surely give rise to a much larger space for development and a more significant scale effect, he said. China and the ASEAN have fully completed the negotiations on the upgrade of the Version 3.0 China-ASEAN Free Trade Area, Li noted, adding that it is expected that an early completion of talks on the free trade area agreement between the GCC and various parties can be done so as to elevate trilateral trade levels. He urged the three sides to unswervingly expand regional opening-up, and build the related regions into a large shared market where resources, technologies and talents flow more efficiently, and trade and investment enjoy greater freedom and convenience, so as to fully unleash the powerful effect of open development. Secondly, he called on the three sides to forge a model of cooperation across different development stages, saying that although the three sides are at different stages of development, their differences are not obstacles to cooperation but complements to each other's strengths. China, he said, is ready to deepen strategic alignment with the ASEAN and the GCC on the basis of mutual respect and equal treatment, enhance coordination of macroeconomic policies and strengthen collaboration in industrial specialization. "We should strive to turn our own strengths into those of everyone, and at the same time help each other tackle new challenges emerging in development, create new ways of international industrial economic cooperation, and promote a coordinated development in which their abilities can be fully explored, and benefits can be doubled and shared," he said. Thirdly, the Chinese premier urged the three sides to create a model of cross-civilization integration, noting that the three sides are home to vibrant civilizations and share Asian values of peace, cooperation, openness and inclusiveness. He called for deeper cultural and people-to-people exchanges and a stronger foundation of mutual trust, and called on the three sides to effectively manage differences through mutual understanding, foster mutually beneficial cooperation through the exchange of ideas and explore a new path for the inclusive advancement of diverse civilizations. The Chinese side, he said, actively supports the initiative of Confucian-Islamic civilizational dialogue proposed by Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. China is ready to work with the ASEAN and the GCC to implement the Global Civilization Initiative, promote mutual learning among civilizations and build greater consensus and momentum for peace and development, he added. Li said China is willing to strengthen trilateral partnerships with ASEAN and the GCC, work together to formulate a high-quality Belt and Road cooperation action plan, strengthen alignment in infrastructure and market regulations, expand cooperation in areas such as energy, agriculture, artificial intelligence, the digital economy as well as green and low-carbon development, and promote people-to-people exchanges and mutual understanding. China, Li said, is also willing to offer greater visa facilitation to ASEAN and GCC countries. Looking globally, the three sides should strengthen communication and coordination under the UN and other multilateral frameworks, safeguard the common interests of developing countries, resolutely oppose hegemonism and power politics, and push for a more just and equitable global governance, Li said. ASEAN and GCC leaders attending the summit spoke highly of the important role stronger trilateral cooperation plays in advancing their respective development and promoting regional peace and prosperity. They said that the summit has opened a new chapter for the three sides to jointly address challenges and pursue development. The leaders pledged to further deepen Belt and Road cooperation, enhance cooperation in such areas as connectivity, economy and trade, industrial and supply chains, agriculture, energy, finance and the digital economy. They also pledged to strengthen mutual learning among civilizations, carry out closer multilateral cooperation, and advance trilateral integration for strong, inclusive, and sustainable development, contributing to the building of a community with a shared future. The meeting adopted the joint statement of the ASEAN-China-GCC Summit.

‘China, Kuwait cultural ties have seen major progress'
KUWAIT CITY, May 22: Chinese Ambassador to Kuwait Zhang Jianwei has affirmed that culture opens doors between peoples, and that humanitarian exchange between China and Kuwait has witnessed remarkable development in recent years. Jianwei made the statement during the opening of the 'Experience Chinese Intangible Heritage' event titled, 'Tea: A Cause of Harmony - Indigo Dyeing and the Art of Tea Preparation,' at the Chinese Cultural Center which, he stressed, plays a crucial role in promoting mutual understanding and cultural exchange. Present at the event were Sheikha Al-Anoud Ibrahim Al-Sabah, who represented the National Council for Culture, Arts and Letters (NCCAL), along with numerous Chinese culture enthusiasts and Chinese community members. The Ambassador expressed gratitude to NCCAL and praised Sheikha Al-Anoud for supporting Chinese culture and strengthening ties between the two nations. He stated that cultural exchanges enrich civilizations and mutual learning leads to prosperity, while confirming the shared appreciation for traditions and the pursuit of a good life in both Chinese and Kuwaiti cultures. He said indigo dyeing is an ancient art reflecting the Chinese pursuit of beauty, and described Chinese tea as a cultural symbol embodying peace, tolerance, and intercultural coexistence. He also pointed out the strengthened cultural cooperation between China and Kuwait within the framework of President Xi Jinping's Global Civilization Initiative, affirming the role of the Chinese Embassy in organizing activities to deepen mutual understanding. He stated that the center, the first in the Gulf region, is a vital resource for learning the Chinese language, as well as traditional and contemporary Chinese culture. He highlighted the successful series of courses and events organized by the center, reflecting the growing Kuwaiti interest in Chinese culture. On a personal note, he announced his imminent departure from Kuwait; indicating it is an honor to oversee the establishment of the center and participate in its activities. In a bilingual speech, she highlighted the strong cultural, media and educational cooperation between Kuwait and China since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1971. She cited the first cultural agreement in 1982, which laid the groundwork for 43 years of exchanges and activities. Director of the center Liu Jinhong explained that the event aimed to introduce Chinese heritage through live demonstrations of traditional indigo dyeing and Chinese tea making by renowned artists. He confirmed that the center is witnessing the growing interest among the Kuwaiti public, as many have been inquiring about Chinese language courses and cultural activities. He pointed out that the friendly relations between China and Kuwait have been going on for more than 60 years, hoping for more Kuwaiti visits to China and the continued flourishing of their friendship.

Arab League Chief Meets Senior Chinese Communist Party Official
Mohamed Mandour Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit met Monday with Li Shulei, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China's Central Committee and head of the party's Publicity Department, at the League's headquarters in Cairo. Li, who is also Secretary of the Secretariat of the CPC Central Committee, is visiting Egypt as part of a regional tour that includes Tunisia and Morocco. According to Arab League spokesman Jamal Rushdy, Li congratulated Aboul Gheit on the 80th anniversary of the founding of the Arab League and the successful conclusion of the Arab Summit held in Baghdad on May 17. He also expressed China's desire to deepen cooperation with the Arab world. The two sides discussed several issues of mutual concern, including the Palestinian cause. CGTN: Two years on, China's Global Civilization Initiative gains greater relevance in a turbulent world
CGTN published an article on the second anniversary of China's Global Civilization Initiative proposed by Chinese President Xi Jinping, which has become more relevant than ever amid uncertainty, turbulence and division in current times. Through introducing China's efforts to practice the initiative and insights provided by experts and scholars, the article emphasized that China's respect for the diversity of civilizations makes the country an important role model for promoting world peace and stability. BEIJING, March 15, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Two years ago, Chinese President Xi Jinping introduced the Global Civilization Initiative (GCI), calling for respect for cultural diversity, the promotion of common human values, the preservation and innovation of civilizations, and stronger international people-to-people exchanges. In today's world, the initiative has become more relevant than ever amid uncertainty, turbulence, and division. Facing rising anti-globalization trends, Elias Jabbour, a professor at the State University of Rio de Janeiro's Faculty of Economic Sciences, highlighted the growing significance of GCI. He said China's inclusive approach to diversity sets an example for the world. At a time when some self-proclaimed 'civilized' nations are enforcing mass deportations and repatriations, China's emphasis on mutual respect and cultural exchange stands in sharp contrast, the professor said, while commending the GCI for championing the coexistence of diverse civilizations without imposing one nation's values on another. Guiding the world toward peace When Xi proposed GCI at the CPC in Dialogue with World Political Parties High-Level Meeting in March 2023, he quoted a Chinese proverb: 'A single flower does not make spring, while one hundred flowers in full blossom bring spring to the garden' to indicate the vitality of cultural diversity and the necessity of embracing multiple civilizations in building a harmonious world. 'Countries need to uphold the principles of equality, mutual learning, dialogue and inclusiveness among civilizations, and let cultural exchanges transcend estrangement, mutual learning transcends clashes, and coexistence transcend feelings of superiority,' said Xi. China's commitment to civilization dialogue was recognized later in June when the UN adopted a resolution proposed by China, designating June 10 as the International Day for Dialogue among Civilizations. Chinese envoy to the UN, Fu Cong, stated that this initiative sought to refocus global attention on intercultural dialogue at a 'critical juncture.' 'If you look around the world, you see a lot of disputes, a lot of conflicts or even wars. And also, there is a surge of intolerance, extremism and also populism. All these can find their roots in the differences or the lack of understanding among cultures and religions,' Fu said. A CGTN poll of 15,574 people across 40 countries and regions, published in March 2023, found that 80.3 percent see multiple civilizations as beneficial to global development, 85 percent believe in building a shared future through tolerance and cooperation, while 89.6 percent call for greater dialogue and openness, rising to 93.7 percent in developing countries. Actions speak louder than words China is not just an advocate, but also a true practitioner. In November 2023, Beijing hosted the first World Conference of Classics, where over 400 experts engaged in discussions on classical civilizations. The conference was a platform to encourage nations to draw wisdom from ancient traditions, fostering greater mutual understanding. Since then, China has organized international forums such as the Nishan Forum on World Civilizations and the International Chinese Language Conference, which bring together scholars, policymakers, and cultural experts to explore shared values. Cultural preservation is one of the main aspects of China's commitment to the initiative. The Beijing Central Axis, a historic architectural complex dating back to the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368), was officially inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2024. The same year, the Chinese Spring Festival was added to UNESCO's Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. These milestones underscore China's dedication to safeguarding and promoting its rich cultural legacy on the global stage. The country has been actively exploring and promoting elements of traditional Chinese culture, bringing its charm to the global stage. From the animated film Ne Zha 2 topping the global box office for animated films, to the video game Black Myth: Wukong gaining international popularity, and the dance drama Wing Chun becoming a smash hit in overseas markets, China is continuously innovating its cultural heritage. It has also made efforts to strengthen people-to-people exchanges. Over the past year, student groups from cities such as Dallas, Houston, New York, and San Francisco have traveled to China to visit universities, companies, and iconic landmarks, following President Xi's 2023 pledge to invite 50,000 students over five years. In recent years, China has co-hosted 'Tourism Years' with multiple countries to promote cultural exchange. By the end of 2024, China had expanded its visa-free entry policy to 29 countries, including France, Germany and Italy, facilitating greater global connections.
