Mandla Mandela to join Greta Thunberg in global mission challenging Gaza siege
Mandla Mandela, the grandson of Nelson Mandela, will be joining Greta Thunberg, among other advocates for Palestinian liberation, in a voyage of boats in an attempt to break Israel's siege. "The genocide against Palestinians in Gaza has been escalating for the past 22 months," Chief Mandela said in a video about the Global Sumud Flotilla's (GSF) mission. Dozens of civilian vessels are scheduled to depart for Gaza on August 31, 2025, as part of the largest maritime mission since the siege began in 2007. The main launch will take place from Spain, followed by departures from Tunisia and other countries on September 4, 2025. Organisers stressed that the flotilla is a lawful, peaceful civilian initiative under international law, warning that any Israeli interception would constitute an act of piracy. They described the mission as both humanitarian and moral, calling for an end to the siege, starvation tactics, systemic dehumanisation of Palestinians, and the ongoing genocide. Another South African activist, Pieter Kriel, went to the West Bank to experience the horrors that Palestinians are subjected to. "I went to Palestine because injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere, solidarity demands that we bear witness," Kriel said. "Israel doesn't want eyes on its occupation.

Greta Thunberg says she will join new civilian flotilla going to Gaza to deliver aid
Greta Thunberg will be joining a new multi-vessel flotilla on 31 August that plans to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza, she announced on Instagram on Sunday. The Swedish activist will join a fleet comprising dozens of boats called the Global Sumud Flotilla. This will be the third attempt by international activists to deliver aid to Gaza. Two previous attempts were derailed in international waters by Israel. Thunberg was one of 12 activists on board the Madleen, which tried to break the blockade in June. Activists on the Handala tried to do the same in July. The activists were unlawfully detained and taken to Israel, including US labour organiser Chris Smalls, who spoke about being physically assaulted by Israeli soldiers and being held in an Israeli prison for five days.

Greta Thunberg, activists plan new aid flotilla, with 'dozens of boats,' to Gaza
Greta Thunberg said she and a Palestinian activist group plan to sail a new flotilla loaded with humanitarian aid to Gaza to break the "illegal Israeli siege." Two other attempts by activists to deliver aid by ship to Gaza, in June and July, were blocked by Israel. Troops boarded their vessels and detained the activists before expelling them. "On Aug. 31 we are launching the biggest attempt ever to break the illegal Israeli siege over Gaza with dozens of boats sailing from Spain," the Swedish campaigner wrote on Instagram late Sunday. "We will meet dozens more on September 4th sailing from Tunisia and other ports," she said. The group will mobilise activists from 44 countries for the initiative dubbed "Global Sumud Flotilla," which will also include simultaneous demonstrations. Humanitarian activists, doctors and artists – including actors Susan Sarandon of the U.S., Gustaf Skarsgard of Sweden and Liam Cunningham of Ireland – are due to take part. The exact number of ships sailing to Gaza this time was not specified. The "Global Sumud Flotilla" describes itself on its website as an "independent" organisation not affiliated with any government or political party. Israel's 22-month offensive has killed at least 61,430 Palestinians, according to Gaza's health ministry, figures the United Nations says are reliable. Hamas's 2023 attack on Israel, which triggered the war, resulted in the deaths of 1,219 people, according to an AFP tally based on official figures.
