Eredivisie End of Season Review: SC Heerenveen

Final Position: 9th Overview: Robin Veldman was able to steer SC Heerenveen into a play-off spot after the departure of Robin van Persie and thanks to Go Ahead Eagles cup victory. They were dismantled by AZ Alkmaar, a result which ended their slim chances of European football this season. However, it was an improvement on the 11th place finish the side achieved in the Eredivisie last season. At home, the side were very strong, losing only once in 17 games, the fourth best record in the league. This was a contrast to an away record that was the league worst, with just seven points from 17 games. It is clear that the side need a better approach to away games next season. Player of the season: Jacob Trenskow 24-year-old Danish winger Jacob Trenskow had a fantastic first season in the Eredivisie. The winger joined in the summer from Swedish side Kalmar and finished with seven goals and three assists in 27 games. There is certainly still areas of his game he needs to improve next season, but a year of top flight Dutch football should have benefited him. Young Player of the Season: Oliver Braude Norweigian 21-year-old Oliver Braude, also had a strong season. The youngster built on a breakout season last year with 36 appearances and two assists from left-back. He won 69% of his tackles and 61% of his duels overall. The defender was also decent going forward, completing just under 56% of his attempted dribbles. Summer needs: Someone who can hit double figures in goals. Ion Nicolaescu had moments, with eight goals in 25 games, and 12 goals overall if we include cup fixtures. If the Moldovan striker can build on that, it could go a long way to helping the side reach the play-offs again next season. They also need to look at how to win on the road, which may be tactical adjustments or a different form of preparation for away fixtures. Grade: B GBeNeFN | Ben Jackson

Eredivisie End of Season Review: Go Ahead Eagles

Finish position: 7th Overview: A cup win and a top seven finish capped off a remarkable season for Go Ahead Eagles. Paul Simonis guided the side to 19 wins from 41 games, with 10 draws and 12 defeats, progressing on the work done by Rene Hake in previous seasons. The cup win provides European football as well, a remarkable achievement for a side that were playing second tier football just a few seasons ago. Advertisement Player of the season: Oliver Antman It could be argued that Oliver Antman is the signing of the season league wide. The 23-year-old Finnish winger has taken the league by storm, with six goals and 15 assists in 32 Eredivisie games. There will be plenty of sides inquiring about the availability of the winger this summer. Antman remains under contract until 2027 and is valued at €4m, although the Eagles wil likely want a lot more for their star man. Young player of the season: Jakob Breum Danish attacking midfielder Jakob Breum really came on this season. After three goals in 37 games for the side last year, he grabbed 11 goals and five assists this time around. Like Antman, he will certainly attract interest this summer. Yet also like his Finnish teammate, the side have him under contract until 2027 so can ask for more than the €5m the player is valued on Transfermarkt. Advertisement Summer needs: The side could do with improving the defence, which conceded 55 goals this season, the most in the top eight. With European football to contend with next season they may also want to add more depth to the squad so that their league form doesn't suffer too much with the added games. Far too often sides follow up a season like this with a relegation battle after they struggle to marry domestic and continental football. Grade: A GBeNeFN | Ben Jackson

End-of-season COLLAPSE could see Liverpool coach leave

Farioli oversees Ajax collapse The 36-year-old Italian has been criticised for a so-called pragmatic approach, at odds with Ajax's historic 'Total Football', and paid the price when the title slipped from his team's grasp. Advertisement Attention is now focussed on identifying a successor. Former Ajax coach Erik ten Hag - recently of Manchester United - was reported as the No1 pick but it appears he is ready to say no. Other candidates include Xavi, Michael Reiziger, Paul Simonis (Go Ahead Eagles), Marcel Keizer and Kjetil Knutsen (Bodø/Glimt) according to Dutch website Voetbal Primeur. There is however another name on the list which could cause consternation at Liverpool. © IMAGO - John Heitinga Liverpool Heitinga discussed as Ajax head coach That's because Arne Slot's assistant coach John Heitinga has been tipped for a takeover. The 41-year-old has already sat in the Ajax hotseat, as a caretaker back in 2023, but could come back into the running as a permanent option. Advertisement 'With Heitinga, Ajax would bring a real child of the club into the house,' a report reads. 'He has now also spent a season looking into the kitchen at Slot. The question remains whether he really has enough baggage to start the tough challenge in Amsterdam.' Heitinga, a former defender, was wanted by West Brom earlier this season but opted to stay put and become a title winner with the Reds.

Besiktas reportedly interested in Go Ahead Eagles' Edvardsen

According to VoetbalPrimeur and RTV Oost, Besiktas are interested in Victor Edvardsen. Polish striker Patryk Klimala, who plays for Australian Sydney FC, is seen as a replacement in Deventer if the Swede actually leaves. Edvardsen has been one of the most talked-about Go Ahead Eagles players in recent weeks due to fine personal form and his feud with AZ player Wouter Goes. Advertisement His playing feats, as well as his competitive streak, have not gone unnoticed in Turkey either, with Besiktas said to be interested in Edvardsen. The Swede is still under contract at De Adelaarshorst until next summer. If Edvardsen does not extend his contract, this summer is the time to prevent him from leaving for free in 2026. Preparing for the worst, Go Ahead are already working on a replacement for Edvardsen in the background, and Klimala is in the picture. The Polish attacker who played for Celtic, New York Red Bulls, Hapoel Beer Sheva and Slask Wroclaw is said to be high on the wish list of the new technical director Marc van Hintum. Currently, Klimala plays on loan for Sydney FC in the A-League this season, where he has scored 21 times in 35 matches. In addition to Klimala, Go Ahead also see a replacement for Edvardsen back in his home country Sweden. The 23-year-old Noel Milleskog is said to be on the Deventer radar. FC Twente were also previously interested in the attacker from IK Sirius. GBeNeFN | Max Bradfield

Hallgrimsson target recognised in latest ranking as ever-present run continues

Ireland Under-21 defender Anselmo Garcia MacNulty has followed up his chat with Heimir Hallgrímsson by making the latest ESPN Eredivisie Team of the Week. The Seville-born youngster featured in PEC Zwolle's 3-1 win away to NAC Breda on Sunday, where his performance earned him a place at centre-back in the weekly-11. It's not MacNulty's first time featuring in the Team of the Week, but this one comes fresh from a meeting with senior boss Hallgrímsson, who watched the 22-year-old play against Feyenoord late last month. PEC lost that one 4-0, but MacNulty's performance in front of the Boys in Green boss had plenty of positives. He is back in his more familiar centre-back role this season after spending last year as a left-back - an area that has been problematic for Ireland for some time now. Hallgrímsson will later this month name a squad for the summer friendlies against Luxembourg and Senegal. The Ireland manager has already stated that Championship players will be disadvantaged by their regular season ending last weekend. The Dutch top-flight will continue into the middle of this month, with Zwolle facing Go Ahead Eagles, Willem II and FC Groningen in their remaining games. So it represents an opportunity for MacNulty, whose mum Maeve hails from Kilmaley in Co Clare, to secure a first senior call-up. He will also hope to finish the season with maximum minutes on the pitch. The former Real Betis and VfL Wolfsburg prospect is currently one of only two ever-present outfield players in the Eredivisie this season, having played every moment of PEC Zwolle's 31 league games to date. Go Ahead Eagles defender Mats Deijl is the other player to have not yet missed any action.
