Kolhapur: After a gap of roughly 15 years, the Solapur airport is resuming commercial flight operations with a new route to Goa starting June 9. Ticket bookings are currently available. In Sept 2024, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the fully refurbished Solapur airport. The facility has undergone extensive renovations costing Rs 60 crore. The upgraded terminal can now accommodate 150 passengers during peak hours and 4.1 lakh passengers yearly. The facility now boasts two check-in counters, expanded aircraft parking spaces, a new fire station, updated air traffic control, vehicle parking for 100 cars, complete LED illumination, and power-efficient systems. Solapur district collector Kumar Ashirwad told TOI: "A Goa-based airline operator is starting the service to Goa four times a week — Monday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. The bookings for the first flight are full. We are planning to expand the air services to Tirupati and Mumbai soon." Security assessment exercises were conducted at the facility on Wednesday. The airport is a participant in the govt's UDAN-Ude Desh Ka Aam Nagrik initiative, designed to provide affordable air travel. Norway and Goa discuss options for bilateral trade

Panaji: Green energy, shipbuilding, waste management, tourism, and agri-exports are some of the sectors where Norway and Goa could collaborate, said officials from the Goa Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI). They said that Norwegian consul general Monica Nagelgaard held a meeting to discuss potential areas for bilateral trade. Nagelgaard said that polar research, marine biology, and fisheries research are areas that Norway and India are already cooperating on. India is among the top countries prioritised by Norway for bilateral projects and research, Nagelgaard added. Deputy consul general of Norway Fredrik Bjerke Abdelmaguid said that aquaculture technology is one of the newest technologies that Norway could offer to Goan entrepreneurs, in addition to technologies on wind energy. Given that Norway invested and conducted extensive research into sustainability practices, Goa could certainly benefit from technology inputs from Norway. GCCI vice-president Pratima Dhond said that Goa is a major tourist destination, and the possibility of reaching out to the Scandinavian Tourism Board to attract more Norwegian tourists to Goa was discussed. Environmentalists urge MoEFCC to reconsider implementation of Aravalli green wall project

Environmentalists are urging the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) to reconsider the implementation of the Aravalli Green Wall Project, warning that the plan poses significant risks to India's oldest mountain range. The statement was made by the 'People for Aravallis' group shortly after Union Minister Bhupender Yadav announced during a national workshop in Rajasthan on 22 May 2025 that the project would enhance green cover and biodiversity in the Aravalli range. Neelam Ahluwalia, a founding member of the non-profit People for Aravallis, expressed concern about the project's implementation through the 'Green Credit Programme' for eco-restoration work in the Aravalli landscape. Additionally, a legal petition is currently pending in the Supreme Court, filed in early March 2025 by People for Aravallis and the Goa-based group 'Rainbow Warriors'. This petition challenges the existing Green Credit Rules (GCR), emphasising that the rules inadequately address the responsibility of the entity seeking green credits. Specifically, the GCR focuses only on the initial planting of trees and does not ensure the long-term survival of those trees. Further, the GCR allows the plantation of 1,100 trees per hectare without any scientific study and permits plantations in fragile ecosystems such as open forests, scrublands, wastelands and catchment areas.
