James Gunn Just Debunked A Popular Lex Luthor Theory, And I'm Relieved

When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. The superhero genre continues to be wildly popular, and all eyes are on what DC co-CEO James Gunn has up his sleeve for the new DCU. The first slate of projects is titled Gods and Monsters, debuting in theaters with the Superman movie. Hype for the upcoming DC movie is real, and James Gunn recently debunked a rumor about Lex Luthor. As a fan, I've got to say I'm relieved. What we know about Superman is limited, and largely based on its limited footage. So fans are filling in the blanks, resulting in a number of theories and rumors swirling around online. While talking to fans on Threads, Gunn confirmed that we wouldn't be getting origin stories for the Superman cast, but that we will not see a certain version of Nicholas Hoult's Lex Luthor. As he put it: There are no origins but Lex is not President. There you have it. While it remains to be seen how/why Lex Luthor will stand in Superman's way in the forthcoming blockbuster, he won't have the full power of the President of the United States. Instead we'll seemingly be getting a private citizen with a huge amount of resources at his disposal. Max: Plans start from $9.99 a monthDC's streaming home is on Max. You can also prepay for a year and save up to 20%.View Deal The full Superman trailer just dropped, and offers clear glimpses at the ensemble cast James Gunn brought together. The footage is thrilling, although the specifics of the story are largely under wraps. Superman's morality is going to be at the heart of the narrative, but the specifics of his dynamic with Lex is unclear. As a reminder, you can re-watch the limited footage below: James Gunn gave Nicholas Hoult the role of Lex because he seemed so full of hatred during auditions, so it sounds like the X-Men alum is going to be firing on all cylinders for Superman. And he'll presumably be a major villain in the entire DCU as a whole, especially since Gunn and company are putting so much focus on serialized storytelling. We've only seen a few very brief appearances of Hoult as Lex Luthor, as James Gunn and company have been keeping the movie's contents close to the chest. That should change as we get close to Superman's release this July, but the choice to not put out a full length trailer until recently seems purposeful. The DC Universe is still in its infancy, but we've already seen connection between its first two projects. Creature Commandos voice actor Karl Urban is making the leap to live action as Rick Flag Sr. in Superman, as well as Season 2 of Peacemaker. So the narrative possibilities feel pretty endless. Superman will hit theaters on July 11th as part of the 2025 movie release list. We'll just have to wait and see what Nicholas Hoult will bring to the table as Lex Luthor.

Superman trailer released: David Corenswet takes flight as man of steel Clark Kent in James Gunn's revamped DC universe

The first trailer for Superman has officially dropped, introducing David Corenswet as the newest Man of Steel in James Gunn's reimagined DC Universe. Corenswet steps into the iconic role of Clark Kent, Earth's steadfast protector, bringing a fresh take to the legendary superhero. In the two minutes 59 seconds trailer, we see that Clark aka Superman is dealing with a lot, which includes his identity as a journalist and superhero. We also see that his girlfriend and fellow journalist Lois Lane (played by Rachel Brosnahan) knows about his superhero identity. In the trailer we are also introduced to Lex Luthor (played by Nicholas Hoult), Guy Gardner / Green Lantern (played by Nathan Fillion), Hawkgirl (played by Isabel Merced), and various others. The film takes inspiration from the comic book All-Star Superman (2005–2008) by Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely, among others. After James Gunn finished his work on Marvel Cinematic Universe's Guardians of the Galaxy 3, he announced that he will be shifting to DC Studios as the CEO. Under his guidance, the DCEU was changed to DCU. In January 2023, it was reported that this was a broad reset of the DCEU Writers Drew Goddard, Jeremy Slater, Christina Hodson, Christal Henry, and Tom King - alongside James Gunn - have mapped out a long-term vision for the DC Universe, planning two "chapters" over the next eight to ten years, with the possibility of more to follow. The first chapter, titled Gods and Monsters, will kick off with five films: Superman, The Authority, The Brave and the Bold, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, and Swamp Thing. In addition to the films, five TV series are also in the works: Creature Commandos, Waller, Lanterns, Paradise Lost, and Booster Gold. Gunn has said he deliberately chose not to retell the origin stories of Batman and Superman, explaining that 'everyone already knows them.' He also pushed back on the idea that the DCU is only spotlighting niche characters, saying the new lineup is designed to appeal to both longtime fans and new audiences alike. The trailer offers a glimpse of the film's tone, blending classic heroism with a modern edge, as fans get their first look at what's to come in this bold new chapter for DC. Superman arrives in theatres on July 11.

Superman: Isabela Merced's Hawkgirl to Have ‘Organic' Wings

DC co-CEO revealed a significant detail about the wings of Hawkgirl, played by , who will appear in . The upcoming movie is all set to hit the theaters on July 11, 2025, kicking off the first chapter: Gods and Monsters of the new DC universe. Starring David Corenswet, Nicholas Hoult, Rachel Brosnahan, Isabela Merced, Nathan Fillion, and more, Superman is one of the most anticipated movies of this year. The Superman director was back to answering fan queries on the social media platform, Threads, and clarified a big detail regarding Hawkgirl's wings in the movie. On Threads, a user recently mentioned James Gunn and asked, 'r hawkgirls wings in the Superman trailer organic or mechanical because it hard to tell for me.' The director, after a few days gap, stepped in with an answer and disclosed that Hawkgirl's wings are indeed 'Organic.' This characteristic of the live-action Hawkgirl, also known as Kendra Saunders, is similar to the details shown in the comics. Saunders made her debut in the comics in 1999 in the first issue of JSA: Secret Files and Origins. In the comics, Hawkgirl's wings are organic and made of the Nth metal. Previously, Hawkman, portrayed by Alis Hodge, has appeared in the DCEU in the 2022 movie Black Adam. Talking about her portrayal of Hawkgirl in Superman, Isabela Merced told Collider in April 2024, 'I would be honored for people to see me on the street and just be like, 'Hawkgirl!' They don't need know my name… These characters mean so much to other people, I'm just happy that I could potentially hold a special place in their heart. I don't care what it's for or what I've done. As long as it means something to them, I'm very excited about that.' Originally reported by Ishita Verma on SuperHeroHype.
