Father lucky to be alive after stray bullet hits neck

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — It was a scary situation in Frayser, as a man survived a stray bullet to the neck over the weekend. Cornelius Seals, a father of four, says he walked out and thought he heard fireworks, when instead it was gunfire. 'It was just a regular day,' he said. 'My brother got his kids out here, so they just walking around and I hear, like, fireworks and my instincts was like, where did they get fireworks from?' Police responded to the shooting on Donna Drive near Burnham Avenue just after 8 p.m. on Saturday. Teen charged with murder in Frayser shooting, robbery Surveillance footage shows his kids were outside as well, so Seals' first instinct as a father was to protect his kids as he was later rushed to the hospital by a neighbor. 'And you run outside and you end up getting shot in the neck, and they shooting for real. Where all the kids at?' Seals said. Seals, who moved from Denver a few years ago says Frayser has been getting too violent recently, with 20 reported homicides this year alone, and says he plans to move away. 'I have to for the safety of my family. I don't want to move but I have to, I can't take any more shootouts,' Seals said. 'I gotta get far away.' Data says there have been 20 homicides in Frayser this year The bullet is still in Seals' neck, as doctor's say it was too close to his spine to remove it. ► A Gofundme account has been set up for Cornelius Seals. Midland father seriously injured in propane tank explosion over holiday weekend

MIDLAND, Texas (KMID/KPEJ)- Friends and loved ones of Jeremy Heatley, a Midland father, have asked for help from the community following an explosion that left Heatley seriously injured. Over the Memorial Day weekend, Heatley was spending time with his family when a small fire broke out in an outdoor kitchen. 'In an effort to protect loved ones, Jeremy tried to stop it from spreading. Tragically, a propane tank exploded, leaving him with third-degree burns across the lower part of his body,' said Hollie Lamb in a statement to Gofundme. Lamb said that Heatley was taken to Harris Methodist Hospital for treatment and faces a long and challenging road to recovery. His injuries reportedly will require extensive care, including multiple surgeries, skin grafts, and physical therapy. 'If you know Jeremy, you know he's the first to lend a hand and always shows up for others. He's a dedicated father, husband, and friend — someone who brings integrity, humor, and heart to everything he does. Now, it's our turn to show up for him. We're asking for your support to help relieve the financial burden on Jeremy and his family during this incredibly difficult time. Funds raised will go directly toward medical expenses, rehabilitation, and supporting his family while he recovers,' Lamb said. If you'd like to donate, you'll find the fundraiser here. Oklahoma man loses nearly entire hand in power saw accident

MIDWEST CITY, Okla. (KFOR) — A tragic accident with a power saw has claimed a man's fingers. Tammy and John Russell own a handyman business and have been working on a Midwest City home for a few months. On Saturday evening, Tammy was out in the back painting and her husband John was cutting wood in the garage. All of a sudden their lives changed. 'I heard this horrific, horrific scream and he came running and he's holding his hands and he said he needed to go to the E.R. right then, it was bad,' said Tammy. John was losing blood fast and with only work tools on site Tammy had to act quickly. 'I remember I had a jacket around my waist that I just was trying to fumble to get it untied,' said Tammy. She used it as a tourniquet and they raced to the hospital, but doctors weren't able to save his fingers. Edmond house fire may have been caused by lightning strike 'They wanted to try, but I knew there was no point. I asked them I said, 'what's holding them together?' He said, skin. I said, just take them,' said John. John is left with only his thumb. 'It was horrific just to look at. I've never seen anything so gruesome, especially happening to my husband. It was just awful because that's his working hand,' said Tammy. Now, the couple hopes their nightmare will teach others. John says even with proper equipment, safety gear and years of experience you need to work cautiously. 'That saw it will jump and bite you and regardless how good you think you are you eventually get caught,' said John. Even in pain, John is moving around and is determined to find a way to still finish the job. 'Just another challenge to work around,' said John. The road to recovery will be tough, especially without insurance. The couple has a Gofundme page set up. To donate, click here. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Cliona Ward lauds her 'warrior' sister's fight against the US immigration system

Cliona Ward, who was detained by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for almost three weeks after returning from a visit to Ireland has described her sister's efforts to get her out of jail as 'warrior' like. Cliona Ward, 54, a green-card holder, who has been living legally there for around 30 years, first ran into legal trouble in March after arriving back in the US from a trip to Ireland to visit her ill father in Youghal, Co Cork. Ms Ward, whose green card is valid until 2033, was detained and questioned by customs at the San Francisco airport on March 19 over her past criminal record. She was facing deportation by immigration officials. Her prior criminal record includes six cases - two felonies for possession of drugs in December 2007 and January 2008, and four misdemeanours. She and her sister Orla Holladay, who also lives in the US, claimed her convictions were expunged, prompting customs to temporarily release her to obtain the appropriate documentation to prove that her records had been cleared in California. Campaigners gathered outside the detention centre, calling for the release of Cliona Ward. Picture: Facebook/iAmerica/SEIU2015 When she went to plead her case at San Francisco airport to customs on April 21 and present proof of her expungement, she was detained again and told to argue her case in front of an immigration judge. The expungement had been carried out at a state, not federal, level. Ms Ward was released by a court in Seattle on May 7 after her original convictions were formally vacated so that they would be recognised at a federal level. Her case has garnered huge media attention both here and in the US. Her detention was linked in many quarters to the Trump administration's new get-tough policies on immigration and border control which made Ms Ward and her family fear she would be held in detention for many months while waiting for her case to be processed by the US immigration system. In the aftermath of her release, US representative Jimmy Panetta said: "This case is an example of this administration doing the wrong thing when it comes to its over reaching deportation policies that can sweep up people like Cliona.' In her first comments since her release, on a Gofundme page, Cliona's Hope: A Mother's Fight for Freedom, Ms Ward called her sister 'my warrior, defender of justice" and added "could this be a calling for you?". While thanking Ms Holladay she also acknowledged the public's help, support and financial donations. Almost $50,000 was raised. 'I cannot thank you enough for what you did for me and now continue to fight for justice served," Ms Ward continued. 'Everyone should have the opportunity to prove their innocence. I love you so much my warrior, my defender, my sister, my anam cara. There is truly no one in the world like you and I am truly blessed. Ms Ward claimed that those who are being detained by ICE "are not informed on how to get out and they are so afraid to speak up for the basic human how to find council (sic) or interpreter services..." 'They (officials) give them detention handbooks in English and Spanish only. All done on purpose to keep them detained and deportable.' Ms Holladay, who is now looking after her sister following her release from jail, said Cliona "will reach out to all of you soon". "She is recovering from dental surgery and needs some time to heal both physically and emotionally," she added.

(Image: Lisa Harris ) A 70 year-old man from Wales is in hospital in Thailand after being seriously injured in a "nightmare" bike crash. Ronald Smith, 70, from Cwmbran, suffered a severe head injury with a brain bleed, a punctured lung, and "a host of other injuries" in the accident on May 9. His family are raising funds for his treatment. ‌ His daughter Lisa Harris said he is currently being treated in a Bupa hospital but she says she needs £7,000 to have him transferred to a government-funded hospital in Thailand. ‌ She said he moved to Thailand two weeks ago and was injured on a motorbike ride when he went off course. For our free daily briefing on the biggest issues facing the nation, sign up to the Wales Matters newsletter here . Lisa has set up a fundraiser to pay for the costs of his treatment which she fears may spiral. His insurance was declared void with the insurance company saying no alcohol test was done at the time, she said. Article continues below Writing on Gofundme Lisa said: "As some of you may know my dad was involved in a motorbike accident on 9th may in Thailand, he sustained a severe head injury resulting in a bleed to the brain, along with a punctured lung and a whole host of other injuries, he's currently in a Bupa hospital but that's already cost 50k. "I need to get him into a government funded hospital but to do that I need to make a down payment of 7k which I just don't have the funds to do, if anyone out there knows of any small businesses that could help or if any of dads friends or people in the community could donate we would all be extremely grateful as a family for anything given. " I've had to fly home for now and leave him out there which is heartbreaking in itself without the worry of how I'm going to afford his treatment.
