Man charged with shooting his brother with intent to murder at Nana Glen
A man is in a critical but stable condition in hospital after allegedly being shot by his brother at a rural property on the New South Wales Mid North Coast. Emergency services were called to a rural property on Orara Way, Nana Glen, in the Coffs Harbour hinterland about 8:30pm on Saturday. They found a 22-year-old man with gunshot wounds to his chest, after a loud argument in the home before the shooting. NSW Ambulance paramedics treated the man before he was flown to Gold Coast University Hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery. A NSW Police spokesperson confirmed the brothers both lived in the home and there were six people on the property at the time of the alleged incident. Just 30 minutes later, highway patrol officers stopped an SUV which they had pursued into a dead-end street, Carrall Close, in an outer-suburban area in nearby Coffs Harbour. Police arrested a 20-year-old man and allege they seized a rifle during a vehicle search. The man was charged with shooting with intent to murder (domestic violence), possession and use of an unauthorised firearm and ammunition, stalking and intimidation and drink driving. Coffs Harbour resident Katie Miller noticed the police activity in the street some hours after a man was arrested outside her home. "I came out about 10 o'clock last night and there was about six cop cars in the street, lights on," Ms Miller said. "I didn't hear any sirens or anything, but it was a very busy street last night. Young mother Bree Edwards lives near the rural Nana Glen property where the shooting occurred. "I didn't hear anything, nothing, no sirens, nothing," Ms Edwards said. "Very occasionally we'll hear something [gunshots], but it's usually from one of the farms with a pest. "It is surprising, I guess I am surprised at something like this happening around this area."

Byron Bay safe despite alleged assaults, police say
Police are assuring residents and tourists that Byron Bay is safe despite recent violent incidents. Two homeless men were allegedly involved in a fight metres away from a Jonson Street cafe filled with people at about 9:30am on Tuesday. Tweed -Byron Police crime manager Matt Zimmer said several onlookers rushed in and restrained a 38-year-old man who was allegedly using a softball-sized rock to bash the head of a 28-year-old man. He said that according to witnesses the alleged attack continued after the younger man became motionless. "This was quite a confronting scene in a very busy area and I want to acknowledge those members of the community who very bravely risked their own safety in front of their own families," Detective Inspector Zimmer said. He said those who intervened likely saved the man's life. Inspector Zimmer said police were hoping to speak with the alleged victim, who regained consciousness on Wednesday afternoon after being put in an induced coma at Gold Coast University Hospital. He said the alleged attacker remained under police guard at Tweed Valley Hospital with minor injuries and would most likely be facing charges once he was released. It is the second serious incident in the northern NSW town in the last three weeks. A 25-year-old man was taken to hospital with serious head injuries after he was attacked in a car park behind the main street shops early on June 21. A witness told the ABC she saw a six young men carry out the attack. Police said the investigation was ongoing and that no charges had been laid. The victim of the attack has been recovering in hospital and was due to undergo surgery today. Detective Inspector Zimmer said the two assaults were unrelated and had no bearing on the safety of Byron Bay as a whole. "These are isolated incidents, so in terms of general community safety it has no impact of the general community," he said. After the June assault Byron Shire Mayor Sarah Ndiaye said the council would conduct an audit on areas of concern. "Unfortunately Byron has always had a bit of an underbelly in that sense, where we do have a higher rate than we should, or want to, of assaults," she said. Federal Member for Richmond Justine Elliot has promised $1 million each for the Byron, Tweed and Ballina shires to spend on security measures. Cr Ndiaye said she wanted part of the funding to spent on lighting and cameras in the car park where the assault occurred.
