'Simple and cheap' food hack helps peace lilies live 'for decades'

David Denyer, who is based at Eflorist and has won Chelsea Gold Medals and Best in Show titles, explained that peace lilies require a certain nutrient to aid growth A flower expert has shared some insider knowledge on making peace lilies look their best. Horticultural expert David Denyer, who's graced television screens on Gardeners' World, divulged a handy tip about these popular houseplants. "Many people may be unaware, but peace lilies require potassium to aid with their growth," said David, who is a florist at Eflorist with an impressive track record of Gold Medals and Best in Show accolades at the prestigious Chelsea Flower Show. He added: "So using a banana peel is a unique way to help with this." ‌ However, he was quick to clarify that there's a "genuine method" to employing a banana peel for boosting peace lily growth, which doesn't involve simply burying it in the soil. ‌ David said: "To make some potassium-rich fertiliser, put some banana peel in a jar of water, and leave it to sit for at least a day or two - the longer the better! "Don't hold back on the amount of banana peel you use, as the more you add, the more potassium-rich the water will become." After the steeping period, Denyer advised to "drain the water into a fresh jug and dispose of the banana peel". He then instructed: "Then, dilute the banana peel water with some fresh water and use this liquid to water your peace lily." David assured garden lovers that utilising banana water biweekly "it will help to keep the nutrients in the soil rich and promote growth". He stressed the necessity of adhering to his specific instructions to avoid potential problems, reports the Express. "Just throwing some banana peel in the soil could attract pests and insects, who may end up eating the plant, and cause it to die faster," Denyer warned. He emphasised that when adopting this method, it's crucial to maintain regular care for the plant, including weekly watering. Further care involves positioning the houseplant where it receives indirect sunlight and removing any wilted leaves or spathes. The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) explained: "Deadheading is the term used for the removal of fading or dead flowers from plants." Denyer recommended routine upkeep of the peace lily and suggested that incorporating the biweekly banana water trick will "keep it healthy". With a smile, David pointed out that bananas can be purchased for as little as 16p, branding the technique a "simple and cheap hack" to experiment with. He concluded: "Peace lilies typically live for three to five years, but with the right care, they can thrive for decades."

EXCLUSIVE Asda sweeps International Wine Awards winning 155 medals - with some winners under £8

Asda has beaten dozens of competitors to become UK's most awarded supermarket in this year's International Wine Challenge 2025. The prestigious global wine competition awarded Asda a staggering 155 medals including four Gold medals and 35 Silver medals. Compared to its supermarket rivals, Asda received triple the number of medals of Sainsbury's, more than 60 more medals than Tesco and more than 100 more medals than Waitrose. The supermarket's exclusive Exceptional Côte de Beaune Villages 2022 is the only supermarket own label red Burgundy to be awarded a Gold medal this year. While Asda's award-winning wine costs just £14.48 - the other Gold medal winners in the same category retail for upward for £250 a bottle. In total, the IWC awarded the Asda wine 95 points, adding tasting notes of, 'perfumed and red plums, cassis with floral and spices, elegant and complex with hints of cedar wood, textured and balanced long finish.' Other Gold medal winners from Asda include, Exceptional Gavi di Gavi 2024 (£10.27), Exceptional Great Western Shiraz 2022 (£7.98) and Exceptional LBV Port 2019 (£12). With a legacy spanning 40 years, the IWC is thought of as the world's most rigorous, impartial, and influential wine competition, judged by a diverse global panel of expert judges. The announcement takes Asda's 2025 wine awards tally so far to 291 with Silver medals at the IWC up 70 per cent versus last year alone. The supermarket has also been recognised at the International Wine and Sprit Competition 2025 (IWSC) scooping up a total of 136 awards (up 21 per cent versus last year), including 29 Silver medals (up 45 per cent versus last year). Clive Donaldson, Senior Manager for Wine Sourcing at Asda says: 'We're very proud to be picking up multiple awards at both this year's IWC and IWSC competitions. 'In 2024 we raised our total medal tally for the fourth consecutive year and we have high hopes to see this continue to rise into 2025. 'Our team of wine experts are always striving to offer our customers the best value and exceptional quality at Asda Price. 'Our Exceptional Côte de Beaune Villages 2022 being recognised by the IWC as a Gold medal Burgundy red wine, alongside other wine that retails for hundreds of pounds whilst ours is under £15, demonstrates just this. 'It's unheard of for a supermarket to receive this kind of standout accolade within the world-renowned red Burgundy category. Warmer vintages mean some of the lesser-known regions of Burgundy have seen a big step up in quality. So this wine is a real hidden gem that customers will be able to find at Asda for great value. 'With our new Exceptional White Burgundy 2023 receiving a Silver medal from the IWSC, we're pleased to see our quality of suppliers and breadth of knowledge in this region for ultra classic wine being recognised through rigorous, unbiased, expert tasting. 'Our other Gold medal winners from the IWC, such as the Exceptional Great Western Shiraz and Exceptional Gavi di Gavi, are perfect summer wines whether it's for a BBQ or a glass in the sun. So following the latest results we're expecting high demand for these in the coming weeks.' It comes as fans prised Asda's £10 Whispering Angel dupe. The supermarket giant has been praised online for selling a £10 'dupe' of the popular wine, which they've named 'Screaming Devil'. X user Bertie Darrell shared a photo of the bottle and wrote: 'ASDA's take on Whispering Angel is, I'm afraid, violently iconic.' The post has amassed over 10,000 'likes' in the past week and sent social media users into a frenzy. One replied: 'I actually prefer the look/design of the bottle too.' Another added: 'I want to buy it! Is it bad that I want to buy it just [because] of the name?' 'Brilliant,' a third said. 'I don't often go to Asda but I'm going to be near one next week so I'll grab a couple of those... commendable marketing!' Meanwhile, others who have tried the wine raved that 'it is delicious'. However, the names of the two wines appear to be where the similarities end - as they have vastly different flavour profiles. According to the Asda website, the Screaming Devil wine has notes of 'perfumed white peach, bright mango, and passion fruit aromas, along with some rhubarb notes on the nose.' The product description reads: 'A really lively vibrant palate, a fresh and saline structure, beautiful zesty length, with intense aromas.' In contrast, Whispering Angel i s known for its floral and fruity notes of 'lavender, raspberry and cherry'. The Waitrose Cellar description reads: 'Whispering Angel is a benchmark of classic Côtes de Provence rosé. 'Adored by wine lovers around the world, the wine has evocative flavours of grapefruit and citrus combined with refreshing acidity.' In February 2019, Malia Obama was seen sipping on a glass of Whispering Angel wine as she attended a Miami pool party with friends. What's more, Adele revealed that her choice of drink in her 2021 song I Drink Wine was Whispering Angel. Speaking to Vogue in October 2021, the singer joked the wine 'turned her into a barking dog'.

IIM Sambalpur sets new benchmark with 60 per cent women graduates, a first among IIMs

More than 60 per cent of women graduates create new gender parity benchmark at top B-school The Indian Institute of Management Sambalpur reached a new milestone in terms of gender diversity at its 9th annual convocation when women made up 60 per cent of the graduating MBA class—an IIM first. A total of 370 students graduated from five different programmes for the first time in the history of the institute in a single convocation ceremony. The graduating class consisted of 316 students of the ninth MBA batch (2023–25), 38 students of the second Executive MBA batch (2022–24), 10 students of the first MBA for Working Professionals batch (2023–25), in addition to six PhD scholars and a few PhD students for working professionals. The ceremony honoured academic achievements, and awards comprised the Chairman's Gold Medals for the best performers across programmes. One of the highlights included 80-year-old entrepreneur GM Gupta graduating from the MBA for Working Professionals programme. Dr Pramod Kumar Mishra, Prime Minister's Principal Secretary, was the guest of honour. He appreciated IIM Sambalpur's forward-thinking gender balance and praised its embrace of artificial intelligence in learning, as well as its innovative Master Weavers program that empowers local artisans of Western Odisha. Exhorting graduates to be change-makers, he added: "The future will not simply be inherited—it will be created." Padma Shri Arundhati Bhattacharya, the Chairperson of the IIM Sambalpur Board of Governors and the CEO of Salesforce India & South Asia, urged students to live each day with grit and determination for self-betterment. "Rise every morning with the commitment to be a better version of yourself today than you were yesterday. That is the measure of success," she said. Delivering the welcome address, Director Prof Mahadeo Jaiswal highlighted the institute's achievements in the last decade. "This convocation celebrates ten years of IIM Sambalpur. For the first time ever, women exceed men among graduates at any IIM—a heartening transition to higher education in India," he added. He also spoke of the institution's journey towards triple accreditation (AACSB, EFMD, and BGA), which would put it in a select group of world-class Indian business schools. Despite economic uncertainties, the 2023–25 MBA batch attracted over 250 companies during placements, with the highest domestic offer at ₹31.12 LPA and the top international package at ₹35 LPA. Leading recruiters included PwC, Accenture, Infosys Consulting, Tata Capital, Deloitte, and Cognizant. Seven awards went to deserving students from different programmes. Some of the notable recipients were Vipul Sharma (Chairman's Gold Medal – MBA), Nilaksh Dixit (Director's Gold Medal – MBA), Raghvendra Patel (Best All-Rounder – MBA), and Shivani Nagpal and Abhishek Kumar Singh (Chairman's and Director's Gold Medals – MBA for Working Professionals).
