Cam Spencer scores 23 points, Memphis Grizzlies lose summer league matchup vs Warriors
Two days off and a practice allowed the Memphis Grizzlies to make some changes heading into their third summer league game in Las Vegas. Memphis brought out a new lineup and came out strong against the Golden State Warriors. Advertisement The Grizzlies led by nine points after the first quarter, but that was the last time Memphis outscored Golden State in a frame. The Warriors won the remaining three quarters and completed a 96-84 win over the Grizzlies at Thomas & Mack Center. Memphis is now 1-2 in three Las Vegas summer league games. Rookies Cedric Coward and Javon Small remained out due to injuries. Neither player has played in Las Vegas. Cam Spencer led the Grizzlies with 23 points on 6-for-10 shooting. Here are three takeaways from the Grizzlies' loss. Grizzlies lineup changes Grizzlies coach Tuomas Iisalo had all of the usual starters available on July 15, but he decided to make lineup tweaks against the Warriors. Rookie Jahmai Mashack started in place of Zyon Pullin, and Will Magnay started over Armando Bacot at center. Advertisement Pullin has struggled most of summer league while playing out of position at point guard for most of his minutes. Bacot has had solid performances, but Magnay was making his summer league debut. Jahmai Mashack's intensity Starting Mashack proved to be the right decision. His energy and effort was evident on both ends of the floor. Mashack continued to show off a jumper that's been better than expected. He knocked down multiple 3-pointers and also attacked the basket. Defensively, Mashack continued to live up to the billing. He finished with three steals and added a block. Jaylen Wells, GG Jackson stats Jaylen Wells continued to play a role that's similar to the one he'll have in the regular season. He didn't have a higher usage or look to be more dominant. Instead, the second-year wing got his shots within the rhythm of the offense while playing off the ball. Advertisement Wells didn't have the most efficient night, finishing with 11 points on 4-for-11 shooting. He did knock down three 3-pointers, but he finished with one assist and no rebounds. Those numbers will need to improve. GG Jackson missed a game while dealing with an illness and return against the Warriors. He got more aggressive as a scorer as the game went on, but it was his passing that stood out. Jackson finished with six assists, which is a massive number for him. His NBA career high is four assists. What's next Memphis has one more scheduled summer league game on July 17 against the Atlanta Hawks (5 p.m. NBA TV). It's safe to say that matchup will be a tough task. Atlanta is 3-0 in summer league action. Advertisement Damichael Cole is the Memphis Grizzlies beat writer for The Commercial Appeal. Celtics' Brad Stevens Makes New Al Horford Statement After Warriors Report originally appeared on Athlon Sports. All indications are that Al Horford is as good as gone for the Boston Celtics. Since the offseason started, the 39-year-old big man has been linked to the Golden State Warriors. Marc Stein and Jake Fischer reported on July 12 that those around the NBA believe Horford will sign with the Warriors. Advertisement "Numerous rival teams continue to regard Golden State as the overwhelming favorite to sign both Al Horford and Melton," they wrote. Horford's second tenure with the Celtics has lasted from 2021 to 2025. This offseason marked the first time he has entered unrestricted free agency since 2019, when he coincidentally also left the Celtics, but for the Philadelphia 76ers. While listing all of Boston's departures, he included Horford, who technically hasn't signed yet. Advertisement "It's hard to see Jrue go. It's hard to see Kristaps go, Luke, Al," Stevens said. "It's just been unbelievable people to have in our group and have added value... I know when they come back to Boston this year, it'll be pretty special, the tributes to all of them." Technically, Stevens didn't confirm that Horford was going to the Warriors, but he confirmed that the big man won't be back with the Celtics for the 2025-26 season. Warriors' Fallback Option to Bradley Beal Revealed By NBA Insider
Warriors' Fallback Option to Bradley Beal Revealed By NBA Insider originally appeared on Athlon Sports. It was not too long ago since the Golden State Warriors were connected to Bradley Beal, should a buyout take place between him and the Phoenix Suns. The Warriors remain connected to the star guard, but also have contingency plans in place, if they need them. Advertisement Suns insider John Gambadoro was the one who originally linked the Warriors to Beal, listing them as one of the top teams interested in signing the former All-Star after a buyout situation. Those circumstances are ones that Beal is already preparing for. Marc Stein reported, "Bradley Beal is actively exploring his options with other teams in anticipation of a Suns buyout, league sources tell [The Stein Line]." Phoenix Suns guard Bradley Beal smilingRobert Edwards-Imagn Images There are notable free agents who are all reportedly waiting on the fallout from the Bradley Beal saga. Jake Fischer reported that Chris Paul, Russell Westbrook, and Malcolm Brogdon are all subject to the waiting game right now. Advertisement Fischer wrote, "League sources say that the options for Paul, Westbrook and Brogdon are likely to be impacted by where Beal lands." The player worth paying attention to in these circumstances for Warriors fans would be Brogdon. The veteran guard has a long list of teams that hold interest, according to Fischer, including Golden State. Fischer added, "All of these scenarios, furthermore, are sure to have an impact on Brogdon. League sources say that the Wizards are open to sign-and-trade discussions to facilitate Brogdon's exit from Washington and a slew of teams have registered varying levels of interest in the 32-year-old." The NBA insider continued, "That list includes the [Los Angeles Clippers] Clippers, Suns and [Los Angeles] Lakers as well as the Warriors, [Minnesota] Timberwolves, [New Orleans] Pelicans, [Sacramento] Kings and [Milwaukee] Bucks." Advertisement Brogdon could provide a trusted option at the backup guard position for the Warriors. It would fill one of several needs still left on the team's roster as they gear up for the 2025-26 campaign. Ex-Warriors Champion Gets Honest About Exit From Franchise
Ex-Warriors Champion Gets Honest About Exit From Franchise originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Kevon Looney decided to leave the Bay Area for the first time in his career this offseason. The 29-year-old opted to pass on returning to the Golden State Warriors in favor of a new opportunity with the New Orleans Pelicans. The former champion is now dropping hints as to why. Advertisement In all honesty, his recent statement is less of a hint and more of a straightforward statement. Looney left little room for doubt regarding what caused him to pursue a frontcourt role with the Pelicans instead. Guard-Imagn Images Looney described feeling hurt by the Warriors. A lack of trust became apparent to the veteran big man. "We're going up against Steven Adams—those are the matchups I thrive in," Looney said. "But I wasn't given the chance to do my job… Even in the playoffs, it felt like they didn't trust me, and I really thought I had earned that trust." To Looney's point, his playing time during the Warriors' 2025 postseason run was minimal. Despite Golden State's lack of prominent frontcourt options, in particular at center, the two-time champion was not featured much. Advertisement Looney averaged 10.0 minutes per game in the 2025 NBA Playoffs. The ex-Warriors center posted 2.2 points, 3.6 rebounds, 0.4 steals, and 0.3 blocks per game in his 12 appearances for Golden State. New Orleans will offer Looney a chance to compete against Yves Missi and Derik Queen for playing time at the five. Depending on how comfortable the Pelicans are feeling with their younger options, the former Warrior may get his time to shine and build trust.
