Top US immigration officials defend arrest of Massachusetts high school student, World News

BOSTON - The head of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement defended on Monday (June 2) his agency's decision to arrest a Massachusetts high school student on his way to volleyball practice, saying "he's in this country illegally and we're not going to walk away from anybody." Todd Lyons, the acting director of ICE, made those comments as reporters asked him during an event in Boston to explain why authorities on Saturday arrested 18-year-old Marcelo Gomes Da Silva, who has been in the United States since 2012. The Brazilian's arrest prompted a large protest on Sunday in the Boston suburb of Milford, where he lives, and a demand for information about the incident from Democratic Governor Maura Healey, who said she was "disturbed and outraged" by the situation. Lyons spoke about the arrest of Gomes while announcing the results of an immigration enforcement surge in Massachusetts that resulted in nearly 1,500 people being taken into custody last month as part of Republican President Donald Trump's hardline effort to ramp up mass deportations. Lyons and Patricia Hyde, the acting field director of ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations in Boston, said Gomes was not the target of the investigation that led to his arrest, and that authorities instead were seeking his father, who remains at large. "So obviously, he isn't the father of the year because he brought his son up here illegally as well," Lyons said. The Milford High School student had been driving his father's vehicle when he was arrested following a traffic stop, Lyons said. Lyons said that when authorities encounter someone in the country illegally, "we will take action on that." "We're doing the job that ICE should have been doing all along," Lyons said. "We enforce all immigration laws." "The actions by ICE in arresting a teenager on his way to volleyball practice are outrageous," Miriam Conrad, Gomes' lawyer, said in a statement. "Locking up a high school junior with no criminal record does not make the community safer. It sows fear among immigrants." Hours after the press conference, a federal judge issued an order barring immigration authorities from transferring Gomes out of Massachusetts without 48 hours' notice while the court considers a lawsuit arguing he was unlawfully detained. The lawsuit said that Gomes entered the United States on a student visa. While his student visa status has lapsed, the lawsuit said he intends to apply for asylum. [[nid:718594]]

Tottenham Hotspur Have Made A Move To Sign This Talented Playmaker: Decent Choice For Spurs?

On Sunday's edition of Last Word on Spurs, journalist Ben Jacobs claimed that Tottenham Hotspur have made a move to sign Lille playmaker Angel Gomes who will become a free agent soon. Jacobs said, 'Gomes is another possibility, and Tottenham have made an offer. Advertisement 'What I've heard in the last kind of 48 hours is that Tottenham have grown in confidence that their offer might be accepted.' Gomes' Unimpressive Season In Ligue 1 Gomes struggled to find consistency with his performances for Lille in the previous campaign. The English attacker was involved in 20 matches for the French club last season, scoring a couple of goals and earning one assist in multiple competitions. The 24-year-old struggled to impress in the final third as he averaged 0.98 shots per 90 minutes in Ligue 1 and kept only 25% of his attempts on target. However, he was tidy when distributing possession in the opponent's half based on his pass completion rate of 81% in the French first division (stats via Advertisement His current contract at the French club will expire at the end of this month which could open the door for Tottenham to sign him on a free transfer this summer. (Photo by) Is Gomes A Decent Choice For Tottenham Hotspur? Gomes is a good dribbler with the ball and can create some decent plays for his teammates to find the back of the net when he is playing well on the field. However, he needs to figure out a way to be more consistent in front of the opposition goal. The English sensation is primarily an attacking midfielder but can also operate as a box-to-box midfielder or as a left-sided wide player if needed. He played in five Premier League matches during his time at Man United but is still quite inexperienced at the highest level. Advertisement Gomes has what it takes to serve as a good, rotational piece in Tottenham's match-day squad. His versatility makes him a decent choice for Spurs to consider this off-season. At 24, Gomes has still got a lot of room to grow as a footballer. However, the North London club need to offer him some time before they can get the best out of him in English football.

Immigration officials say they intended to arrest father of Milford teen instead

The so-called 'collateral arrest,' in which agents arrest immigrants in the country illegally even if they are not an intended target, was previously banned by the Biden administration, but reinstated under President Trump. The arrest of Gomes sparked outrage and protest in Milford, as friends and family of the 18-year-old high school junior questioned why ICE would arrest a teenager who they said was a dedicated student athlete with no criminal record. When asked why Gomes was arrested, Hyde said, 'I didn't say he was dangerous, I said he was here illegally.' Advertisement Officials did not say why they wanted to arrest the father. Court records show the elder Gomes was was stopped for running a stop sign and driving without a license in July 2023, but the charges were dismissed on recommendation of the probation department the following November. He paid $100 court costs. No other court records were found. Hyde blamed so-called 'sanctuary' jurisdictions for the number of collateral arrests in Massachusetts, saying agents would not have to go out searching in communities if local authorities would assist with removal operations. Advertisement 'When we go into the community and find others who are unlawfully here, we are going to arrest them,' Hyde said. Hyde said Gomes remains in ICE custody, but did not specify which facility. On Sunday, Gov. Maura Healey said she was 'disturbed and outraged' by the teen's detainment. The first-term Democrat, who served for eights years as the state's attorney general, said she supports ICE arresting those with criminal backgrounds, but said they've 'made mistakes' before. 'By their own admission, they have also arrested several hundreds of individuals in Massachusetts and taken them away who do not have criminal records,' she said. 'Everybody should be following the law here, following the rules here. ICE should be producing information about who has been arrested, what they've been charged with, what their circumstance was, and they should make that available to the public.' Community Builders: 57 Ride

For John Gomes, father of four and founder of the 57 Ride, the mission is simple: ride, raise hope and help families facing the unthinkable. Article content From June 12 to 14, Gomes and a small group of friends and fellow dads will cycle from Toronto's Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) to the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO) in Ottawa — more than 450 kilometres — to raise funds and awareness for childhood cancer. Article content Article content Named after a sentimental reminder of Gomes's late father, the 57 Ride supports two grassroots causes: the Phoebe Rose Rock Committee at the Kindred Foundation and the Griffin Bell Golden Endowment Fund at CHEO. Proceeds will go directly to helping families who must travel long distances for treatment and to funding critical research for hard-to-treat childhood cancers. Article content 'I have four healthy kids,' Gomes said. 'Why wouldn't I go do this? We've met these oncology families; their stories break your heart. This is how we help.' Article content The route, a three-day endurance challenge, will take riders from SickKids to Peterborough, on to Perth, and finally to CHEO for a celebratory lap. It's not a race; it's a show of solidarity. Article content 'It's me and a couple of close friends, supported by another buddy driving a 'blister bus,'' Gomes jokes about the Ford F150 from Lincoln Heights Ford. 'We're all fit dads in our 40s, and we can still do hard things,' Gomes adds. He will be joined by Jeff Delgado and James Van Toever, and Konrad Eyvindson will be on driving duty. Article content Article content He calls it a 'mom-and-pop lemonade stand' kind of event: local, personal and powered by community love. 'The world feels like it's on fire,' Gomes said. 'We're just trying to do something kind. That's where change starts, with your community.' Article content Article content Article content Article content
