Morgantown Post 2 falls to Beckley Bash 5-4 to bow out of Legion State Tournament

MORGANTOWN – Morgantown Post 2 head coach Jacob Goodnight didn't think his team played a clean game on Friday night in an 11-4 defeat to Charleston Post 65. That effort seemed to spill over slightly on Saturday as Post 2 fell to Beckley Bash Post 35, 5-4, in an elimination game under the sun. With the defeat, Morgantown's summer comes to a close on Day Three of the 2025 American Legion Baseball State Tournament. Both teams earned ten hits in the contest. The Bash was led by Ashton Cochran, who went 3 for 3 with an RBI. Mason Chaney also secured a three-hit game for Morgantown in four at-bats with two RBIs. 'It was a good game of baseball, but our errors came back to hurt us in the end,' Goodnight said. 'They made some errors also, but they got out of the jams when they needed to, and our mistakes seemed to carry over for a couple of batters, and they eventually got runs out of that. We put that three spot up but let them respond by doing the same thing, just a tough day for us today.' Beckley took the early lead in the bottom of the first inning but Post 2 responded in the top of the third as Eli Boggs doubled home Brance McCune to tie the game. Kane Williams singled to put two men on for Morgantown, and Chaney delivered with a two-run single to give Post 2 a 3-1 lead. But as Goodnight alluded to, Beckley punched back with a three-run inning of its own in the third to pull ahead again, 4-3. Post 2 came up empty in the fourth, and that opened the door for the Bash to extend the lead, 5-3, on a fielder's choice in the infield. Morgantown cut the lead in half on a single by Nate Wolfe that brought Williams around to score, but a double play ended the inning, and Post 2 would fail to find the equalizing run before it was too late. 'It took a while for us to bring it together this summer, but everyone got comfortable down the stretch and we won some games how we knew we could,' Goodnight said. 'We were a little bit tight this weekend in the tournament, but these guys let their talent show the last few weeks, and that's why we were able to be successful. We just asked them to play hard and keep showing up, that's all you can do.' Post 2 set to host American Legion State Baseball Tournament this week at Mylan Park

MORGANTOWN – There will be plenty of baseball played this week at Mylan Park as the American Legion Senior State Baseball Tournament will be held on Dale Miller Field beginning Thursday, with the championship set for Monday next week. Morgantown Post 2 will host the eight-team event, as two teams from each of the four Areas across the state qualified for the state tournament. Beckley Bash, Post 60 Knights, Clarksburg Post 13, Wheeling Post 1, Berkeley Post 14, Charleston Post 65, and Parkersburg Post 15 will join Post 2 to battle for the state championship and a spot in the Mid-Atlantic Regional Tournament set for August 6-10 in Hanover, Maryland. Beckley Bash and Post 60 Knight (Berkeley) will open the day at 10:00 a.m., followed by Berkeley Post 14 and Charleston Post 65 at 1:00 p.m. Clarksburg Post 13 and Wheeling Post 1 will begin the evening session at 4:00 p.m. Morgantown will face off against Parkersburg Post 15 in the opening round of the tournament, a team against which they split a pair of games earlier in the summer, with a 9-2 victory followed by a 4-0 defeat. 'The challenge this week is going to be the week itself,' Post 2 head coach Jacob Goodnight said. 'It's going to be a grind. We have to take each game and day one at a time. We've been fortunate enough to make it to the end of the week for the past two seasons, and I think the coaches can help our guys take their recovery seriously so we are able to make it deep into the tournament.' Post 2 enters the week as the Area 2 champions, having gone 3-0 last week in the Area 2 tournament. Morgantown managed 21 runs in three games, but Goodnight says it's their pitching that can make the difference for them this week. 'On the mound is where we need to be locked in the most,' he said. 'We need our guys to be throwing strikes from the start. When we've seen success this season, it's been because we didn't give our opponents free bases. When we make teams earn every single run, we are tough to outhit. The Area tournament gave us the opportunity to play some excellent teams, and showed us that we can win the tough games. Having some momentum going into the week will help us play a little more free and looser.' Another advantage for Post 2 is being on its home field at Dale Miller. 'Being at home is awesome,' Goodnight said. 'We get to come to our ballpark every day, and our fans will continue to come out and support. We get to sleep in our own beds after a long day, while the other teams will be in hotels all week. We will get to relax at home and recharge for the next day when we aren't at the ballpark. We are looking forward to the opportunity that comes with this week.'

A cop or a criminal? Police stop motorcyclist with uniform, badge and gun and learn he's a convicted felon

At first glance, police say, his uniform and his motorcycle had all the trappings of local law enforcement. The motorcycle had emergency lights and 'Traffic' and 'Public Safety' emblazoned on the side, pictures show. His uniform allegedly included a tactical vest, pepper spray, a badge and a gun. But in reality, Hemet police say, the man was a convicted felon impersonating local law enforcement. According to a Facebook post on Tuesday, Hemet police said they pulled over a motorcyclist who turned out to be a convicted felon allegedly impersonating a police officer. He also appeared to have a Glock-style handgun on his duty belt. The man, identified as Marshal Goodnight, 73, was armed with two stun guns, an expandable baton, handcuffs and pepper spray, the department said. Goodnight was wearing a tactical vest, olive slacks and a beige shirt, complete with a badge and what appeared to be a body camera and radio equipment. Police say they pulled over Goodnight on Monday after they saw him commit multiple vehicle code violations and activate emergency lights on his motorcycle. Goodnight was detained and Hemet police determined that his stun guns were in working condition. Goodnight is a convicted felon who is not legally allowed to possess firearms or related weapons, according to police. He's also not licensed to provide security in the state of California. Police arrested and booked Goodnight on several misdemeanor counts: suspicion of being a felon in possession of a stun gun; possession of a baton; being a felon in possession of a tear gas weapon; and for impersonating a peace officer. Anyone with information about the case is encouraged to contact the Hemet Police Department at (951) 765-2400, Ext. 3725.

Hunter curses out Clooney for pushing dad out of race

John Bowden, The Independent Scandal-plagued former first son Hunter Biden ripped into actor George Clooney in a foul-mouthed tirade aired Monday. The 55-year-old son of former President Joe Biden went on an expletive-filled rant against the Hollywood megastar in an interview with Andrew Callaghan, an independent journalist and former host of the podcast, All Gas No Brakes. He railed against the Goodnight, and Good Luck auteur's demand that Joe Biden drop out of the 2024 presidential race, which the younger Biden and others in the family's inner circle have made clear they believe is to blame for the Democratic Party's loss to Donald Trump. But he also took aim at Clooney's acting chops, suggesting hurt feelings were at play. "What do you have to do with anything? Hunter Biden seethed about the ER star. "Why do I have to listen to you? What right do you have to step on a man who's given 52 years of his life to the service of this country and decide that you, George Clooney, are going to take out basically a full page ad in the New York Times to undermine the president at a time in which, by the way, what do people care about the most?" Biden claimed that the division within the Democratic Party led to Republicans having an insurmountable advantage ahead of November. He also claimed that the disastrous performance of his father at his one and only debate with Trump was due to his father taking Ambien in order to sleep on foreign trips. "I know exactly what happened in that debate. He flew around the world, basically mileage that he could have flown around the world three times, he's 81 years old, he's tired as s---, they give him Ambien to be able to sleep, he's gets up on the stage and he looks like he's a deer in the headlights," Hunter told Callaghan, adding: "(I)t feeds into every story that anybody wants to tell." Of Clooney's acting, he said of the From Dusk Till Dawn star: "I agree with Quentin Tarantino. George Clooney is not a actor. He is like... I don't know what he is. He's a brand." Biden's rant was nearly duplicated in a second podcast appearance — this time, a conversation with Jaime Harrison, former chair of the Democratic Party. Even here, Biden told the At Our Table host he didn't give a "s***" about Clooney's political opinions. "We lost the last election because we did not remain loyal to the leader of the party," he said during that appearance. "That's my position. We had the advantage of incumbency, we had the advantage of an incredibly successful administration, and the Democratic Party literally melted down." His father's performance at a June presidential debate with Donald Trump alarmed voters on all sides of the political spectrum and drew immediate fears from Democrats that the party was preparing to hand the election over to Republicans. Clooney was a prominent part of that avalanche, penning an op-ed for the New York Times titled, "I Love Joe Biden, But We Need a New Nominee". Pod Save America co-host Jon Favreau, a former speechwriter for Barack Obama, said that internal polling conducted by the Biden campaign showed the former president losing by a landslide were he to remain in the race. The elder Biden dropped out of the race a month later, after an agonizing few weeks of calls for him to step down by backbencher Democrats and the less-than-delicate hinting from the likes of former Speaker Nancy Pelosi and others seemingly urging the same. Kamala Harris, his vice president and running mate, ascended to the top of the ticked after party officials shot down the idea of a last-minute primary election playing out at the Democratic National Convention. Democrats had already blown their own chance to hold a real primary earlier in the year. Tim Walz, the governor of Minnesota, was drafted as her running mate after a short candidate search.

'Goodnight Cinderella' is local slang for Rohypnol, GHB, or any date-rape drug that renders victims vulnerable to assault or robbery. The 23-year-old is suspected of drugging, robbing, and beating a Frenchman in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. But this isn't the first time, with Sitas reportedly having dozens of entries for this kind of scam on her criminal record. Cops say she would target exclusively foreign tourists. The escort is estimated to have stolen over £13,000 worth of goods. Sitas was allegedly accompanied by two women when she approached her victim in the Lapa neighbourhood. The Frenchman said they talked and drank before going to Copacabana, where they continued to drink, before heading back to the city centre. He went on to explain that at some point during the night, he lost consciousness. But when he woke up, he was in A&E with multiple injuries. 'Francini has countless cases of this type of crime and is known in the criminal underworld as the 'Queen of Goodnight, Cinderella'. 'With her arrest, we hope to see a drop in this kind of crime, since multiple victims have identified her.' Francini is the mother of a two-year-old boy, according to her social media. She was caught at Rio's Pedra do Sal landmark with a vial of the sedative drug clonazepam. 'She was at the tourist spot looking for a new victim,' said the police chief. 5 Sitas was allegedly accompanied by two women when she approached her victim in the Lapa neighbourhood Credit: Facebook /
