Manorama fell in love with SM Ramanathan, a notable figure in the theatre company where she worked. The couple eloped, going against her mother's wishes. However, tragedy struck shortly after the birth of their son, when Ramanathan left her, allegedly based on an astrologer's prediction that his life would be in danger following the child's birth. Ironically, Manorama's father had abandoned her in a similar manner.
