‘Adolescence' is second most watched English-language series in Netflix history

The Netflix miniseries 'Adolescence' consists of four episodes. (Netflix pic) PARIS : Who would have guessed that a dramatic miniseries about adolescents in distress would be able to compete with the giants of the Netflix catalogue? And yet, 'Adolescence,' launched in March 2025, has just reached an impressive milestone with 141.2 million views, according to the latest rankings released by Netflix. This figure puts it ahead of season 4 of 'Stranger Things' (140.7 million), an unexpected achievement for a production that is far removed from the conventions of the fantasies or thrillers that tend to tally up the most users. The miniseries had already zoomed to renown in April by climbing to ninth place in the ranking of the most popular English-language series of all time on Netflix, surpassing the performance of the third season of 'Stranger Things.' This momentum shows no signs of slowing down, as 'Adolescence' has even surpassed the ratings of the fourth season of the series starring Millie Bobby Brown. To date, season 4 of 'Stranger Things' has accumulated 140.7 million views, a threshold now surpassed by the drama miniseries. 'We're overwhelmed for you to embrace us the way you have,' said Stephen Graham during Gotham TV Awards à New York, after the miniseries picked up three prizes. 'This was a small, colloquial piece that was made with love, respect, humility and dignity, and we treated the subject with … care and conviction.' The miniseries could also garner several nominations at the upcoming Emmy Awards, which are set to be announced on July 15. Co-produced by Plan B, the company co-founded by Brad Pitt, 'Adolescence' follows the story of a 13-year-old boy arrested for the brutal murder of a classmate. Behind this fictional story, however, the co-creator has said that he was inspired by several real-life tragic cases in the United Kingdom: 'Where it came from, for me, is there was an incident in Liverpool, a young girl, and she was stabbed to death by a young boy. I just thought, why?' explained Graham to Radio Times. 'Then there was another young girl in south London who was stabbed to death at a bus stop. 'And there was this thing up North, where that young girl Brianna Ghey was lured into the park by two teenagers, and they stabbed her. I just thought, what's going on? What is this that's happening?' In first place, the first season of the series 'Wednesday' starring Jenna Ortega maintains its lead with 252.1 million views, topping the list of the most-watched English-language series on Netflix.

'Overcompensating' star Holmes is getting flooded with DMs from 'mostly gay men'

Holmes wasn't initially meant to play Hailee in the wildly popular Prime Video show, Overcompensating. She originally auditioned to play Carmen, a freshman who forms a quick bond with the show's main protagonist, Benny, played by the creator and star, Benito Skinner. The role of Carmen ultimately went to Wally Baram, but the team loved Holmes, who was born Chelsea Elizabeth Holmes and uses she/they pronouns, and asked her to read for Carmen's self-assured, high-femme, supportive roommate, Hailee. Sign up for the to keep up with what's new in LGBTQ+ culture and entertainment — delivered three times a week straight (well…) to your inbox! The role is a departure from their usual look, which typically consists of men's clothing, and it's not a character they are often asked to read for. "I don't know if it's that my queerness has not let me be able to be in the femme spaces as much, or if it's the fatphobia of this industry, but I was really excited." For the self-tape, Holmes put on a push-up bra, learned how to do makeup, contoured her face, and just had a blast, which perfectly captures the essence of who Hailee is in the show. She watched the tape back and made sure it made her laugh before sending it in, and it was a hit. The casting team loved Holmes's first tape, and after doing a few chemistry reads, she knew the part was hers because during the audition process, she noticed that Skinner was "so bad at hiding his face, and he was laughing so hard." are we out of chasers?? [cc svcubvs scp liarscp] #haileematthews #overcompensating #holmes #aestheticedits #edits #aftereffects #viral #xyzbca #fyp #fypage #foryoupage Shortly after the show aired, Hailee (and the Overcompensating show) was a hit across social media platforms. Less than a week after the season premiered on Prime Video, it became the number 1 show on the platform in the United States and Canada. Her quotable one-liners were clipped for fan edits that were set to a Charli XCX song, a popular K-pop song, or any other popular song gaining momentum on TikTok at the time. The videos are garnering hundreds of thousands of likes on TikTok and spreading like wildfire across X. There were multiple posts across social media that had captioned the videos, saying, "I wish she was my roommate." Coming from the improv world and cutting their teeth in Chicago, Holmes was given room to improvise a lot on the show. "Hailee was already written as the comedic relief in the show, so for Benny to be like 'You can improvise and make her more elevated,' was just really cool." If your entire FYP isn't #HaileeMarieMatthews in #Overcompensating, that pisses #BenitoSkinner off! #GothamTVAwards If your entire FYP isn't #HaileeMarieMatthews in #Overcompensating, that pisses #BenitoSkinner off! #GothamTVAwards She says that family, friends, and fans have sent her jokes that were made in the show, which people think she improvised. Like the moment when she says Carmen's brother's death "pisses [her] off," but makes sure to credit Skinner for that joke. But she did improvise the moment where she says, "Hailee Marie Matthews, also known as 'hmm.'" The joke she's most proud of is when she was fake orgasming on an actor's lap and said, "That's how easy it is to fake it." Skinner and the cast burst out laughing immediately after the camera cut, Holmes recalls, because they didn't know she was going to do that. The whole experience of playing Hailee has been very special to Holmes, and they feel very lucky. "I feel very grateful that the audience is like gays and girls," she says. "My DMs right now, mostly gay men," which she says is shocking because they're "a really picky crowd, I say as someone who a lot of my best friends are gay men, so it means the world that I made them proud." But with all this newfound attention, she's trying to stay humble and live by some sage wisdom her friend imparted to her: "Never let your best set mean too much or your worst set mean too much." The show has yet to be renewed for season 2, but the experience of playing Hailee is something they'll never forget. "I think I'll never get to play a part like that again in my career, unless we get a second season, but I'm forever grateful to Benny and Scott King (the showrunner) for seeing me as an actor," Holmes says. "I'm just really grateful it's helped show my range, because all I want to do is be able to act, so badly." I'm so her #fyp #stofichi #overcompensating #diva #edit #hailee I'm so her #fyp #stofichi #overcompensating #diva #edit #hailee When asked what Holmes hopes for Hailee in season 2, they say that audiences may have picked up on clues about what could be explored, saying, "I gave some hints to it throughout the season, maybe when she's drunk, that Hailee doesn't know everything about her sexuality yet." is now streaming on . - YouTube

The 30 Rock star, 67, spoke with E! News at the 2025 Gotham TV Awards on Monday, June 2 and shared that when it comes to Father's Day in a few weeks, he has only one thing he wants to do. "I'd ride my bike to Virginia," the dad of eight joked. "I'll have a long time with fresh air." He is also dad to 29-year-old daughter Ireland, whom he shares with ex Kim Basinger. "Talk show host," responded daughter Carmen, while son Rafa said, "NFL QB." Other kids want to be an artist/actor, a soccer player and a chef/doctor. While reposting the adorable video, Baldwin hilariously joked about the cost of sending all those kids to school. "The tuition!" he wrote. Gotham TV Awards: ‘Adolescence' Sweeps Limited Series Categories

Adolescence topped the 2025 Gotham TV Awards, sweeping the limited series categories and winning three of the four awards for which it was nominated. The four-episode series about a teenage boy accused of murder, which became a much-talked-about phenomenon shortly after its streaming debut in March, won breakthrough limited series and lead performance in a limited series (Stephen Graham) and tied for best supporting performance in a limited series (Owen Cooper). It's fourth nomination was for co-star Erin Doherty in the supporting performance category. More from The Hollywood Reporter Nicole Clemens Hired to Head Amazon MGM's International Originals Tonys: Sarah Paulson on the Truth-Teller Behind the Pulitzer-Winning Play 'Purpose' Gael Garcia Bernal's 'Magellan' Goes to Janus Films Jenny Slate tied with Cooper for the supporting prize, recognizing her performance in Dying for Sex, which was nominated for three awards. Breakthrough comedy series went to The Studio, while The Pitt won breakthrough drama series. The Pitt star, writer and producer Noah Wyle and his castmates Katherine LaNasa and Shawn Hatosy accepted the breakthrough drama honor, with Wyle saying that they were the only ones from the Max show at the event. And as he's done throughout the promotion of The Pitt's first season, Wyle highlighted how the show is a 'love letter to first responders … people in the trenches for the past five years,' his voice getting louder as the well-heeled audience at Manhattan's Cipriani Wall Street applauded. In the comedy categories, Fantasmas' Julio Torres won best lead performance in a comedy series, and Deli Boys' Poorna Jagannathan won best supporting performance in a comedy series. Accepting the first award of the night, Jagannathan joked that the Gotham Awards are the 'only awards that count' and that 'New York City's opinion is the only one I care about.' She thanked her family and the team behind Deli Boys, which she called a 'little brown show' with 'no message … no point to prove.' 'We got to do what a lot of white actors get to do: We got to play dumb fucks,' she added, noting that the Hulu series had yet to be renewed for a second season. 'The fact that we got to be so ordinary was what made it so extraordinary.' As in the comedy categories, in the drama categories, the Gotham TV Awards similarly spread the wealth around, with Matlock's Kathy Bates winning best lead performance in a drama series and Black Doves' Ben Whishaw winning best supporting performance. The Pitt and Matlock were each nominated for three awards, with both shows nominated for breakthrough drama series as well as in the lead and supporting performance drama categories. Neither Whishaw nor Bates were on hand to accept their awards. Pee-wee as Himself won best original film, while Rebel Ridge's Aaron Pierre was named the winner of outstanding performance in an original film. And Social Studies won breakthrough nonfiction series. The Gotham Film & Media Institute also presented a number of tributes on Monday night. Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino as well as Hwang Dong-hyuk received creator tributes; Elisabeth Moss and the cast of The Handmaid's Tale accepted the inaugural ensemble tribute; Brian Tyree Henry received the performer tribute; Sheryl Lee Ralph took home the Sidney Poitier icon tribute; David E. Kelley received the visionary tribute, and Parker Posey was honored with the inaugural legend tribute. Sherman-Palladino and Palladino were honored by Kelly Bishop, Luke Kirby and Gideon Glick, who have each appeared in multiple productions from the team behind Gilmore Girls, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and Étoile. All three reflected on their experiences auditioning for the writer-directors. Kirby professed his love for the married creators, saying in part, 'I will love you until the day someone drives a stake into my heart.' And Bishop, who recalled Sherman-Palladino fighting for her to play Emily Gilmore in Gilmore Girls, said the honor Sherman-Palladino and Palladino received marked a 'celebration of a canon of work that has dazzled audiences and critics alike,' adding that the pair's 'determination to create something unique and everlasting in all shows changed TV.' Taking the stage to the Étoile theme, Sherman-Palladino joked about retiring and getting divorced with Palladino quipping that in both cases they needed to keep going because of 'gambling debts.' Posey was honored by her White Lotus co-stars Leslie Bibb and Sam Rockwell who had fun offering their own takes on some of her character's memorable, Southern-accented lines, including 'tsunami,' 'Piper, no' and 'Buddhism.' 'No one sees the world quite the way she sees it,' Rockwell said in part of Posey. Accepting her legend tribute, Posey riffed on the name of the honor, thanking White Lotus creator Mike White for writing her character and 'believing in a legend,' something she also thanked White Lotus network HBO for. 'Let's keep the arts alive. Let's turn this business into entertainment that everyone can love,' she added. 'I love you New York. I wish I could live here again.'
