Grand Forks' Northern Valley Law Enforcement Memorial vandalized; police seeking information
Apr. 18—GRAND FORKS — The bronze statue in Grand Forks' Northern Valley Law Enforcement Memorial was recently vandalized, and it's unclear who is responsible, according to the Grand Forks Police Department. Dedicated during a May 2023 ceremony, the piece is located in Optimist Park at 4601 Cherry St. More than $415,000 was raised for the memorial, which honors fallen law enforcement from northeast North Dakota, northwest Minnesota and Manitoba, Canada. There is a large crack in the bronze rose that the statue man is holding. Grand Forks County Commissioner Bob Rost told the Herald that it appears as though someone kicked the rose, attempting to break it apart from the statue. The act of vandalism was reported Sunday, April 15, but it is unclear when it occurred, according to GFPD Lt. Andrew Stein. No suspects have been identified, and no witnesses have come forward as of Thursday afternoon, April 17, Stein said. Anyone who may have witnessed the act, or has any other relevant information, can contact the police department either by phone at (701) 787-8000 or by submitting a tip on the agency's Facebook page, website or via the Tip411 app.

Grand Forks Police Department warns residents of 'warrant' scam
Apr. 2—GRAND FORKS — The Grand Forks Police Department reminds the community to beware of people who reach out to tell them they have a warrant and need to make immediate payment. A press release issued by the GFPD Wednesday morning, April 2, advises residents that law enforcement does not contact people to tell them they have a warrant and demand payment in the form of gift cards, Bitcoin, Venmo, CashApp, Paypal, Ecash or Western Union. Most people who attempt to elicit money in this way live outside the U.S. and know there is little chance they will be extradited here to face charges if they are identified, the release said. Before sending any money, it is advised to contact local law enforcement and speak to an officer. Once money is sent, it cannot be recovered, the release said. The GFPD also advises residents to keep personal information safe and secure, do not reveal social security or credit card numbers, or any other sensitive information. "Be cautious of unsolicited emails, phone calls or texts asking for personal or financial information," the release said. "Additionally, review your checking, savings and credit card accounts on a regular basis to detect any suspicious activity and report it immediately."

Grand Forks Police Department to participate in distracting driving enforcement campaign
Mar. 24—GRAND FORKS — The Grand Forks Police Department will participate in a distracted driving enforcement campaign throughout April, which is Distracted Driving Awareness Month. This safety campaign is funded through grants awarded by the North Dakota Department of Transportation, according to a press release issued by the GFPD. The funding allows additional officers to be assigned on duty in order to target distracted driving violations. The GFPD participates in enforcement campaigns like this with the goal of making Grand Forks' roadways safer, the release said. The use of wireless communications devices to compose, read or send electronic messages while operating a motor vehicle on any street or highway is prohibited. Those who do so can be fined $200. The GFPD wants to remind the public of the following safe driving tips: remember to always look out for small children and slow down around areas such as parks, schools and residential areas; drive defensively and expect the unexpected; use appropriate occupant and child restraints; never drink and drive; and never text and drive.
