GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KREX) — An explosion has been reported at a local defense contractor on Winters Avenue. GJFD adds new fire truck to fleet

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KREX) — In front of Station 6, the Grand Junction Fire Department unveiled its new tower truck, Tower 6, to onlookers. The 100-foot mid-mount platform truck was welcomed into the fleet Friday. Tower 6 will replace a straight ladder truck that will be placed in reserve. The truck will cover the northside of town, providing advanced capability to the city's high-rise buildings. GJFD interim Chief Gus Hendricks explains the tower system. 'It has an elevated aerial that we can put in the air, and it has a bucket or a platform on the end. We call it a mid-mount, because when you have an opportunity to see it, instead of that turn table being on the rear of the vehicle, it's in the middle of the vehicle.' Making it easier for the engineer to work the ladder and driver and also allowing firefighters to sweep buildings for rescue. The truck holds six but they typically staff four. An engineer who drives, a captain who is the company officer in charge of the crew and two firefighters. The truck was ordered in October 2022 under previous Fire Chief Ken Watkins. 'It's (Tower 6) in the fire service; what we call a quint. Meaning, it has five different capabilities. One of which is not only the aerial, but it also does carry water.' You might be able to catch this truck while you're out and about as crews continue their training with this new truck. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
