Two people suffer serious injuries in alleged assault in Muskoka, OPP investigating

Ontario Provincial Police and crime unit officers are investigating what the authorities are calling a 'serious incident' in a wooded area in Gravenhurst. Police say two people were reportedly assaulted in an area west of Muskoka Road South just before midnight on Tuesday. The two individuals were taken to a hospital for treatment of serious but non-life-threatening injuries. Their identities were not disclosed. Police officers descended on the area of Muskoka Road South/County Road 169 and James Street in Gravenhurst in the early morning hours on Wednesday, and are advising residents in the area of Muskoka Road South and Manitoba Street, north of Monck Road in Bracebridge to expect a heavy police presence, including tactical and K9 units, plus forensic officers, with the investigation underway. While police didn't reveal whether they are looking for any suspects, they did confirm there is 'currently no threat to the safety of the general public.' Bracebridge OPP urges anyone with information to contact the detachment at 1-888-310-1122 or Crime Stoppers to remain anonymous.

Two people have been arrested in the death of a child in Ontario more than two years ago. Ontario Provincial Police say officers responded to a call in the town of Gravenhurst on Jan. 5, 2023, about a child who had suffered "significant injuries." They say the child died in hospital two days later. A 24-year-old from Brampton, Ont., has been arrested and charged with second-degree murder. A 33-year-old from Gravenhurst was also arrested and charged with failing to provide necessaries of life. OPP are continuing to investigate along with the Office of the Chief Coroner and the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service.

Police make arrest in death of toddler in Gravenhurst

Police in Bracebridge arrested two suspects connected to the death of a two-year-old child in Gravenhurst. On January 5, 2023 just before 8 p.m., Ontario Provincial Police and emergency crews responded to a call for a toddler with significant injuries at a home on Brown Street. The toddler was taken to a hospital and succumbed to their injuries just two days later. On Tuesday, a 24-year-old of Brampton was arrested and charged with second degree murder. One day later, a 33-year-old of Gravenhurst was arrested and charged with failing to provide necessaries of life. The accused duo remanded in custody and appeared before the Bracebridge courts. A publication ban has been issued and as a result, the OPP will not be able to release further information. The Muskoka OPP Crime Unit is continuing the investigation under the direction of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch, with the assistance of OPP Forensic Identification Services and in conjunction with the Office of the Chief Coroner and the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service. Muskoka gears up for what's expected to be a busy summer for tourism. Muskoka gears up for what's expected to be a busy summer for tourism. The May long weekend often marks the start of the summer season for Gravenhurst as the town experiences higher than usual traffic due to cottage-goers. Staff at businesses in the area say they are already experiencing higher foot traffic due to the nicer weather Mother Nature has been providing. 'This weekend marks the sort of traditional weekend where people open their seasonal homes and, it does get people out and about in their backyard exploring,' said Heather Fraser, manager of the Shipyards. Muskoka The Shipyards Muskoka Marketplace in Gravenhurst, Ont. (CTV News/Luke Simard) With an increased demand for the public to shop locally, Fraser adds local artisans are hard at work. 'Artists are busy preparing new products and bringing them in,' said Fraser. 'A lot of them (products) are one of a kind so people know there will be a huge influx of new stuff for them to browse through.' Muskoka Steamships is also preparing for a busy summer season with the first cruise ships scheduled to depart May 24. 'It's been a hard winter, so we're ready to go and I think people are,' said John Miller, president of Muskoka Steamships and Discovery Centre. 'Especially this last week, we've seen a lot of people wandering around, a lot of inquiries, a lot of phone calls about want to go for a cruise.' Muskoka Muskoka Wharf in Gravenhurst, Ont. (CTV News/Luke Simard) For the first time in 25 years, Muskoka Steamships will have three cruise ships operating out of Gravenhurst, including a restored ship that runs on electricity, which is expected to cruise starting July 1. A few kilometres north in Bracebridge, Cottage Friends is busy preparing for more foot traffic after a challenging winter. 'We are truly welcoming anybody that would like to come, and shop in our main street. We're very proud of the main street,' said Sharyn Wilson who is the shop keeper at Cottage Friends. 'We work very hard to keep it nice.' Bracebridge Mayor Rick Maloney said the town is ready for the influx of tourists and seasonal residents. 'We're making sure that our parks are cleaned up, spruced up and opened up and, ready to accept visitors,' said Maloney. 'We are putting out, some of the safety devices in around the bay, making sure that all that, safety equipment is there for folks that are using our beaches and things like that.' Muskoka Gravenhurst, Ont. (CTV News/Luke Simard) Maloney adds that tourism is a huge boost to the local economy. 'Whether it's construction, trades, the building supply side of things, it's the downtown, merchants,' said Maloney, 'Large box stores, whether it's the Walmart's or Home Depots, Canadian Tire and Home Hardware, it's also our restaurants... it is a very busy time.' Town officials want to remind residents and tourists that Silver Bridge will be closed for the foreseeable future after a shift was discovered late last year. The closure could cause traffic delays in town.

Fire danger rating upgraded to high in Muskoka as wildfire risk rises

Residents are urged to be more careful with any outdoor flames after crews responded to several human-caused wildland fires in recent days. 'Careless burning, unattended campfires, and improperly discarded smoking materials are some of the leading causes of wildland fires we're seeing right now,' said Huntsville/Lake of Bays Fire Department Fire Chief Gary Monahan. 'We're asking everyone to do their part, be responsible with fire and take steps to reduce risks around your home.' On Monday, a wildfire tore through an area near Riley Lake in Gravenhurst, destroying two vehicles and several small structures in its path, including two cabins and a camper trailer. Residents are encouraged to clean up leftover yard waste from the winter, especially dry leaves, fallen branches, pine needles, and other debris that an act as fuel for fires. Keeping lawns trimmed and well-watered and storing firewood at a safe distance from your home can also make a difference. Officials say creating a buffer zone, or defensible space, around homes can help to slow the progress of wildfire or even stop it altogether. Muskoka's fire danger rating was upgraded to HIGH this week, which bans daytime burning. 'And all burning must comply with local fire bylaws,' the fire department concluded.
