Pedestrian, 89, seriously injured in hit-and-run
An 89-year-old man has been seriously injured after a car driver hit him and then fled, police have said. He was walking in Bramhall Lane, Stockport, when the collision happened at about 14:00 BST, Greater Manchester Police said. An air ambulance crew attended and the man was taken to hospital with serious injuries. A 35-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and failure to stop. He remains in police custody. Police officer hospitalised after being crushed between two cars
A 41-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of assault, dangerous driving, and failure to stop after a Greater Manchester Police sergeant was injured in an alleged hit-and-run incident in Rusholme. The incident occurred on Frodsham Street at 6pm on Friday, where a car reportedly "reversed into the officer several times" before fleeing the scene. The injured sergeant is currently receiving hospital treatment for his injuries, which are not believed to be life-threatening or life-changing. Assistant Chief Constable Steph Parker has condemned the assault, emphasising the risks faced by frontline officers and assuring that an investigation is underway to bring the perpetrator to justice. Police are appealing to the public for any CCTV or dash cam footage of the incident or the moments leading up to and following it, urging them to call 101 and quote log 2828 of 30/05/25.

Smoke sent billowing across area after 'scary' fire breaks out at house
Smoke was sent billowing across part of Tameside this afternoon after a fire broke out at a house. Fire crews raced to Mottram Road in Stalybridge after the blaze broke out, shortly after midday. The patio door of the property went up in flames, Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue (GMRS) said. They said it 'quickly caught fire' and 'got large immediately.' A neighbour with a hose helped douse water on it before firefighters arrived they said, adding it was 'very scary.' A GMFRS spokesperson said: 'At around 12.05pm today (Saturday 31 May), four fire engines from Stalybridge, Mossley, Hyde and Hollins fire stations attended a house fire involving a patio door on Mottram Road, Stalybridge. 'Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus arrived quickly one hose reel, one short extension ladder, a gas monitor and thermal imaging camera to extinguish the fire and make the area safe. Oldham murder arrest after 'suspicious death' of man
A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a 50-year-old was found dead at a Manchester Police was called to reports of the suspicious death of a man in Eldon Street, in Oldham, at about 19:50 BST on cause of death had not yet been determined, police said, and his family had been informed and were being supported by specialist officers.A 64-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in custody. Det Insp Andrew Barrett from Oldham CID said: "We are working hard to understand what has happened and get the answers his family deserve."At the moment, the man's cause of death is undetermined, but inquiries are ongoing, and we have made an arrest to progress this investigation forward."Det Insp Barrett urged anyone with information to contact the remain in the area for reassurance and to conduct inquiries, a GMP spokesperson said.
