GVMC readies action plan to check diseases this monsoon season
The Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) has planned several strategies to check seasonal diseases in the city this monsoon season. The civic body has drawn a comprehensive action plan focused on mosquito control, raising people's awareness and improvement in sanitation. Identifying fever hotspots based on history, intensifying anti-larval operations, and initiating widespread fogging and spraying activities are among the key strategies. Chief Medical & Officer of Health (CMoH) Naresh Kumar said that 106 water stagnation points had been identified in the GVMC limits. Sanitation teams are being deployed to monitor such spots and clear water stagnation points, especially during rains. Spraying operations are being carried out in drains across the city, and oil balls will be put in select water bodies to check mosquito breeding. The GVMC has been using drones to spray pesticides in some water bodies. 'While anti-larval measures are already on, we will intensify the operations in anticipation of the rains and the possible outbreak of vector-borne diseases,' Dr. Naresh Kumar said. Augmenting manpower To strengthen the manpower for these intensified operations, the GVMC has proposed the recruitment of an additional 430 personnel. Currently, around 230 workers are engaged in anti-larval operations. The proposal is expected to be reviewed during the upcoming GVMC Council meeting, likely to be held in the first or second week of June. Starting June 15, when educational institutions are scheduled to reopen, fogging and spraying operations will be carried out in all hostels. In general, Visakhapatnam reports dengue cases often when compared to chikungunya and malaria. Last year, a few cases of malaria were reported. However, the number of cases being reported is on the decline, the officials said. Meanwhile, the GVMC officials are preparing to launch awareness campaigns in collaboration with the Health Department, ASHA workers, Auxiliary Nurse Midwives (ANMs), and sachivalayam staff. A door-to-door surveillance exercise will be rolled out to educate residents in clearing stagnant water, aiming to curb mosquito breeding at the source.

GVMC council meeting likely to be held on June 6
The Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) council meeting is expected to be held on June 6. If all goes according to plan, this will be the first official council meeting of the year, and the first since the NDA assumed leadership of the GVMC, including the posts of Mayor and Deputy Mayor. The last council meeting was held in December 2024. Earlier this year, the GVMC conducted a special budget meeting at the end of March. However, it was not attended by corporators from the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP), as NDA leaders had proposed introducing a no-confidence motion at that time. A senior NDA corporator said on condition of anonymity that though there were initial plans to hold the council meeting by the end of this month, it was postponed to avoid a clash with the TDP Mahanadu event. 'Many TDP corporators and senior leaders will not be available during that time.' The corporator noted that several proposals have been pending as no council and standing committee meetings were held over the past few months. He added that the corporation needs to kickstart monsoon preparations, including measures to prevent spread of seasonal diseases. Sources said the GVMC officials have begun finalising proposals such as those relating to desilting and streetlighting. Some previously approved administrative works are also expected to be included in the agenda. Given that the council meeting is being convened after a long gap, sources indicate that corporators may be allotted extended time during the question hour. Meanwhile, NDA corporators are reportedly urging the government to appoint a full-time commissioner for the corporation ahead of the proposed council meeting. Recently, some leaders met Minister for Municipal Administration P. Narayana during his recent visit to the city and submitted representations, in which they stated that the corporation has no fulltime commissioner, since January-end, which is directly affecting the civic body's functioning.

Civic body functions sans full-fledged chief for long
Visakhapatnam: This is probably the first time that the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) has been functioning sans a Commissioner for a long time. Although district Collector MN Harendhira Prasad is heading the corporation as in-charge Commissioner, a full-fledged Commissioner is yet to be appointed. Even as the State government is considering Visakhapatnam as the financial capital, IT and tourism hub, depriving the corporation of a full-fledged Commissioner comes as a surprise for many. As a result, the administration of the civic body has gone haywire. Without a dedicated Commissioner, accountability of the GVMC staff has gone for a toss. With the Collector already shouldering a number of responsibilities, focusing much on the GVMC has become a difficult task. The alliance that was quite proactive in unseating former Mayor G Hari Venkata Kumari and former Deputy Mayor Jiyyani Sridhar is not evincing keen interest in appointing the Commissioner for the GVMC, point out YSRCP leaders. Even as the Minister for Municipal Administration and Urban Development P Narayana and 20-Point programme chairman Lanka Dinakar announced that a Commissioner would soon be appointed for the GVMC in their earlier visits to Visakhapatnam, steps are yet to be taken in this regard. During the YSRCP's tenure, the GVMC Commissioner used to get transferred at frequent intervals. This happened especially so when the Commissioner refused to dance to the tunes of the key leaders of the YSRCP. Apparently, there were several scams during the YSRCP tenure amounting to thousands of crores of rupees, including the TDR scam in Visakhapatnam. A full-fledged Commissioner for the corporation is required to expose these scams. But why does the NDA government not paying attention to appointing a Commissioner for a long time after the previous Commissioner P. Sampath Kumar got transferred in January, just after six months of assuming charge, turns out to be a million-dollar question.
