Carvel ice creams, the creator of the soft serve, launches in India
Carvel, America's iconic ice cream franchise, is opening its doors in India this August. Carvel was founded in 1934 by Tom Carvel and has a 91-year legacy behind it. The brand is the creator of soft serve ice creams. Starting with a store in South Delhi this August, they plan to expand to 100 stores across the country over the next few years. The Indian expansion is led by Unify Foodworks. How the soft serve was invented The story goes that Tom Carvel, a Greek-born American, was selling ice creams from a truck in the state of New York in 1934. When his truck had a flat tyre, he started quickly selling the ice cream before it melted. It turned out to be a huge hit. This gave him the idea that soft desserts, as opposed to frozen ice cream, could also be a business idea. Some other brands also claim to have invented the soft serve, but Carvel created a special recipe and also patented soft serve ice cream machines. It became one of the first fast food restaurants in the US, much before the likes of McDonald's and Burger King. Since then, the brand is known for pioneering ice creams. Their popular ice cream cakes feature special characters created around holidays, such as Cookie Puss, Fudgie the Whale and Hug-Me the Bear. India chapter 'India is a promising new market for Carvel. We see strong alignment between Carvel's legacy of quality and flavour, and the evolving tastes of Indian consumers,' says Steven Yang, Senior Vice President, APAC at GoTo Foods International (the parent company of Carvel). 'Our work with Unify Foodworks gives us the local insight and operational strength needed to grow with intention and impact.' Unify Foods is a company that began in 2024 with the aim of bringing international QSR chains to India. The first store will open in Delhi. 'We are not disclosing the location as of now,' says Sumer Sethi, founder of Unify Foods. 'But it will be located in south Delhi.' He shares that at Carvel will be using fresh milk and cream at the store in developing the ice cream, something other soft serve brands in India do not do. All the signature offerings from the US, such as the Flying Saucer ice cream sandwich, will be available in India. 'We are localising many of the flavours for India. We will have kunafa, tapioca toppings and Rooh Afza syrups.' The soft serves will be priced for ₹79. The plan is to start with North India in the first one-and-a-half years. They are eyeing Bengaluru and other south Indian cities in year three.

Jennifer Aniston Reveals the 1 Food Her Mom Wouldn't Allow Her to Eat
Jennifer Aniston is reflecting on how her late mother, Nancy Dow, shaped her approach to food and wellness. 'I was never allowed to have a sugary piece of anything, and I was also served spelt bread,' Aniston, 56, told People, noting that she 'grew up in one of those holistic households.' As a child, she added, Dow 'drilled' into her the importance of staying hydrated. 'I've been so hyper aware of people who don't drink water now because I've always been such a water drinker,' she said in the interview. 'I have girlfriends that just can't drink water, they just don't like the taste of it. It's like, 'It's water. It's just water,' and I constantly say, 'You have to hydrate. You must hydrate.' The 'Friends' star was born and raised in New York by Dow and Greek-born actor John Aniston. Their marriage ended in divorce in 1980, when Aniston was 9. Dow died in 2016 at the age of 79, and John Aniston passed away 2022 at 89. In a January conversation with Aniston described her philosophy on eating as being balanced and flexible. 'I do 80/20. I give myself days where I can have whatever I want. I don't deprive myself,' she said. Most of the time, the Emmy winner sticks to nutrient-dense meals, allowing herself more freedom with food about 20% of the time. Calling her diet 'boring,' she shared that it typically includes plenty of protein, vegetables and salads. Aniston also favors subtle yet thoughtful adjustments to her dishes, such as forgoing extra salt and using salad dressing sparingly, and has grown to appreciate 'the power of seasonings' and the brightness of vinegar to elevate flavor. 'Stuff like that will create a taste that is so delicious, where you're not just dousing everything with salt and butter or olive oil to make it taste good,' she explained. On those 20% days, she might splurge on a cheeseburger, fries or Mexican food. Pasta and pizza also make occasional appearances. 'All that stuff that's savory,' she said. "I'm not a sweets person. I don't go for ice cream or cakes. I definitely have a savory tooth.' This article was originally published on

John Varvatos releases new collab with John Lennon estate
American designer brand John Varvatos has released a new collaboration with the John Lennon estate, the latest step in the house's rapid renewal. 'The collaboration fuses fashion and music — paying homage to the legend with graphic shirts, suiting and outerwear,' the New York label said in a release. The collection references the iconic image of Lennon photographed on a Manhattan rooftop wearing a graphic New York City black and white T-shirt with cut-out short sleeves, which trumpeted his love for his adopted city. The updated version is made in khaki green, not white like the original. There's also a really cool knit, overprinted with a famed photo of the rocker at his Steinway Model Z white piano, used when recording the Beatles' White Album. Or a crisp linen shirt with a spidery pencilled self-portrait by the Liverpool -born rockstar. The collaboration comes some 45 years after the tragic assassination of Lennon outside The Dakota apartment building on the Upper East Side, where he lived. The Lennon launch comes before the opening of a new 3,200-square-foot John Varvatos store on Wooster Street in Soho on 10 September, celebrating the 25th anniversary of the fashion brand's first store in the downtown district. Greek-born, Michigan-raised, Varvatos was the key menswear designer for both Ralph Lauren and Calvin Klein before launching his own brand in 1999. After several changes of ownership and major problems during the pandemic, the brand — sans designer John Varvatos — was taken over by Lion Capital, which also controls All Saints. According to recent financial statements, the John Varvatos label posted annual sales of $86 million in 2023.
