Browns Cornerback Unhappy With Role in 2024
Browns Cornerback Unhappy With Role in 2024 originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Cleveland Browns' season didn't go as planned last year as the team suffered injuries to key players while entire position groups seemed to underperform. Advertisement A 3-14 mark and last-place finish in the AFC North opened the way for a successful draft, and hopefully, a turnaround season in 2025. But one Browns player wasn't happy with the way he was used last season, and it raises some eyebrows on the defensive side of the ball. 'It's been an interesting kind of relationship with Greg and sort of his role,' explained Orange and Brown Talk host Dan Labbe on a recent podcast. 'Last year was the first year ... he's been their slot guy for a few years, but last year it was really kind of the first year where, when they did have two corners on the field, he wasn't one of them.' Newsome would like a larger role in the defense in 2025, or play somewhere else, as Mary Kay Cabot of reported. Advertisement 'When I talked to Greg Newsome at the Super Bowl on Radio Row back in January or early February, he talked about the fact that he wants to be used more. He was primarily the nickel back last year. He wants to be on the field more often,' Cabot reported on the Orange and Brown Talk podcast. 'More tellingly, Newsome actually point blank said, 'You know, I need to know some things before I want to sign a long-term contract here.'" Newsome started 11 games in 2021, 15 games in 2022, 13 games in 2023, but just three in 2024. BREAKING NEWS Super Bowl winner made available for a trade in wild move hours before 2025 NFL Draft
The Cleveland Browns hold the second pick at the NFL Draft tonight but it seems they aren't stopping there as they urgently try to overhaul their roster. A shock report on Thursday afternoon, hours before the first round gets underway in Green Bay, from Fox reporter Jordan Schultz says that cornerback Greg Newsome and defensive end Ogbo Okoronkwo, a Super Bowl winner, are available for a trade. Futhermore, Schultz says the Browns are still getting calls about their second pick and aren't completely closed off to a late move. As it stands, a huge moment in the Draft will be whether the Browns take Abdul Carter or Travis Hunter.

Browns Trade Defensive Key in Latest Offseason Suggestion
While the Cleveland Browns are potentially focused on taking a step forward with its offense in next month's NFL Draft, it's the defense that could still see some changes. As trades are wildly speculated on this summer, there's one move that makes sense for the Browns from a financial standpoint. Advertisement During the regular season last year as we approached the NFL trade deadline, many thought Cleveland corner Greg Newsome would be dealt due to his contract situation. Ward is scheduled to make $13.377 million next season in the final year of his four-year deal. Bleacher Report's Kristopher Knox wrote that Newsome could be gone this offseason. "As previously mentioned, the Browns are entering a rebuilding phase and should be looking to shed salary," Knox wrote. "They could save $13.4 million in cap space by dealing Newsome, which is precisely why the 49ers should see if he can be acquired. San Francisco still has $21.7 million in available cap space." Advertisement Newsome took a small step back last season after showing much promise through this first three. Part of that is due to injury issues as he played just 13 of 17 games, and he has yet to play a full season in his pro career.
