‘The imperative': Taiwan's request for spot in Talisman Sabre exercises analysed

The Australian's Foreign Editor Greg Sheridan discusses Taiwan's request for a spot in Talisman Sabre above Australia's coastline as China ramps up war drills. 'The imperative for both Taiwan and for Australia is not to get a visitor's card at somebody else's exercises, it is actually to beef up their own defence capabilities,' Mr Sheridan told Sky News host James Macpherson. 'Taiwan itself has only in the last few years started to really beef up its own defence capabilities to make itself a porcupine, very difficult for China to swallow, and Australia's defence spending, of course, is utterly pathetic.'

Labor recognising Palestinian statehood would be a ‘mistake'

The Australian's Foreign Editor Greg Sheridan discusses Prime Minister Anthony Albanese walking both sides of the street on Gaza and Palestinian statehood. 'I think you have to view this all through the lens of domestic politics and especially managing the left and managing the Labor Party,' Mr Sheridan told Sky News host James Macpherson. 'The current worry the government has of not having another bit of trouble with the Trump administration, I think, recognising a Palestinian state would be a mistake.'

Albanese has ‘comprehensively mismanaged' securing a meeting with Trump

The Australian's Foreign Editor Greg Sheridan states that Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has "mismanaged' securing a meeting with US President Donald Trump. 'Sadly, the Prime Minister is not suffering for it politically as yet,' Mr Sheridan told Sky News host Peta Credlin. 'I think this has been comprehensively mismanaged in terms of Australia's national interest. 'I think from the start, he's mismanaged Trump.'

China policy ‘dysfunctional' under Anthony Albanese

The Australian's Foreign Editor Greg Sheridan questions the value of Prime Minister Anthony Albanese's trip to China, describing it as 'ill-advised'. 'I thought the visit was ill-advised in its duration and its symbolism and its substance,' Mr Sheridan said. 'Nothing of substance came out of the visit at all, absolutely nothing. 'China policy has become very dysfunctional under Albanese … the government no longer has a dialogue with the Australian people about the strategic challenge that China poses.'
