New York Jets mercilessly cut star man after disastrous 2024 season
The New York Jets announced on Friday afternoon that they have parted ways with kicker Greg Zuerlein after a rough 2024 season. Zuerlein, 37, has been in the league since 2012 and has played for three teams - including the Jets for the past three seasons. However, this past season saw him hit career lows in field goals made, field goal attempts, field goal percentage, extra point makes, and extra point attempts. As a result, the Jets sent out a 'thank you' post on social media, revealing the decision to move on. While the Jets did not select a kicker in the 2025 NFL Draft, they did sign undrafted free agent Caden Davis from Ole Miss after the draft had concluded. Additionally, the Jets signed kicker Anders Carlson in the middle of the season prior and elevated him to thee starting role. Zuerlein was drafted by the then-St. Louis Rams in the sixth round of the 2012 NFL Draft out of Missouri Western State University. A more than reasonable kicker through his first five seasons, Zuerlein's peak came in 2017 when he hit 95 percent of his field goal attempts and 44-of-46 extra point attempts. He earned first-team All-Pro honors and a Pro Bowl nod that season and finished as the NFL's scoring leader. The following season, Zuerlein knocked through the game-winning field goal in overtime of the NFC Championship to send the Rams to Super Bowl LIII. The kicker scored LA's only points in 'The Big Game' in a 13-3 loss to the New England Patriots. He spent one more season with the Rams before signing a three-year, $7.5m contract with the Dallas Cowboys in the offseason. Zuerlein spent two seasons in Dallas before being cut in March of 2022. A few days later, he signed a one-year deal with the Jets. He would continue to re-sign with New York on one-year deals, up until today. This year, Zuerlein hit career lows in multiple categories. He only played eight games, hit just nine field goals (the only time he hasn't kicked in the double digits) and had a career-worst accuracy mark of 60 percent. A knee injury in late October effectively ended his season.

New York Jets part ways with Greg Zuerlein: From Pro Bowl Rams kicker to Cowboys hero
New York Jets part ways with Greg Zuerlein: From Pro Bowl Rams kicker to Cowboys hero The New York Jets have released kicker Greg Zuerlein, ending his three-year stint with the team. Zuerlein, 37, struggled in 2024, converting only 9 of 15 field goals (60%) while battling a recurring knee injury that placed him on injured reserve twice. This marked a sharp decline from his 2023 franchise-record 92.1% success rate. Known as 'Greg The Leg,' Zuerlein set a Jets record with a 60-yard field goal in 2022 but couldn't regain his form. The team had five different kickers on the 2024 roster, signing Greg Joseph for Week 18. Zuerlein's 14-year career began with the St. Louis/Los Angeles Rams (2012-2019), where he earned a 2017 Pro Bowl nod, posting an 82% field goal rate and a franchise-record 61-yard kick. With the Dallas Cowboys (2020-2021), he held an 82.9% success rate, including a 59-yard game-winner. Despite his past success, Zuerlein's recent struggles prompted the Jets' decision Zuerlein signed a two-year, $8.4 million contract with the Jets last offseason, which was the biggest contract for a kicker in Jets history. He has no guaranteed money on his contract for 2025 and will be a post June 1 cut since New York has already used their two pre June 1 designations on Aaron Rodgers and CJ Mosley.

Jets release K Greg Zuerlein after difficult 2024 season
May 16 - The New York Jets released veteran kicker Greg Zuerlein and signed defensive end Michael Fletcher on Friday. Zuerlein, 37, struggled with injuries and accuracy in 2024, the former Pro Bowler's third season with the Jets. He missed nine games with knee issues and made only 9 of 15 field-goal attempts and 13 of 14 extra points. Zuerlein converted 65 of 75 field goals (86.7 percent) in his first two seasons with New York. Over 13 seasons, he made 82.2 percent of his field goals (338 of 411) and 95.6 percent of his PATs (395 of 413). Zuerlein played for the St. Louis/Los Angeles Rams (2012-19) and Dallas Cowboys (2020-21) before joining the Jets. The Jets created $2.4 million in salary cap savings by releasing "Greg the Leg," who has a $2.3 million dead cap hit for 2025. They have kickers Anders Carlson and Caden Davis on the roster. Fletcher was undrafted in 2025. He played in 22 games at Michigan State (2019-22) and 23 games at Appalachian State (2023-24), totaling 11.5 sacks and 71 tackles with two fumble recoveries. --Field Level Media

Jets release kicker Greg Zuerlein, the latest veteran to depart in the team's youth movement
The New York Jets released kicker Greg Zuerlein on Friday, an expected move as the team continues to get younger on its revamped roster. The 37-year-old Zuerlein spent the past three seasons with the Jets, but his spot appeared tenuous. New general manager Darren Mougey and coach Aaron Glenn have made a concerted effort to add youth to the team. Zuerlein's release came three days after the Jets cut 39-year-old punter Thomas Morstead. New York has also moved on this season from a few other prominent veterans, including quarterback Aaron Rodgers, wide receiver Davante Adams and linebacker C.J. Mosley. With Zuerlein gone, quarterback Tyrod Taylor, who turns 36 in August, is the oldest player on the Jets' roster. Taylor, who's expected to back up Justin Fields, is one of only three players on New York currently in their 30s, joining long snapper Thomas Hennessy, who turns 31 next month, and wide receiver Josh Reynolds (30). Backup offensive lineman Zack Bailey turns 30 in November and wide receiver Allen Lazard is 30 in December. The Jets will now likely have a kicking competition in training camp with Anders Carlson, who played in five games last season for New York while Zuerlein was sidelined, and Caden Davis, who was signed as an undrafted free agent last week out of Mississippi. Zuerlein played in only eight games last season as he struggled with knee injuries that landed him on the injured reserve list twice and inconsistency, making just nine of his 15 field-goal attempts. He was terrific for the Jets in his first two seasons in New York. In Week 13 of the 2022 season against Minnesota, Zuerlein set the franchise record with a 60-yard field goal. He also became the first Jets player to make three field goals of 50 or more yards in consecutive games, and was the third in franchise history to make two field goals of 50 or more yards in one game. In 2023, Zuerlein had arguably the best season by a Jets kicker in franchise history, going 35 of 38 on field-goal attempts — including going 5 of 6 from 50 yards or longer. He also set the team record with 26 consecutive fields goals made. Zuerlein spent his first eight seasons with the Rams after being a sixth-round draft pick out of Missouri Western in 2012 and was an All-Pro selection in 2017. He played two seasons in Dallas before joining the Jets in 2022. Zuerlein has made 82.2% of his field goals in his 13 NFL seasons and converted 95.6% of his extra point tries. The Jets signed defensive end Michael Fletcher, an undrafted free agent out of Appalachian State who was in rookie camp as a tryout, to take Zuerlein's roster spot. ___ AP NFL:

What was the lowest-scoring Super Bowl ever? Record was set recently
NFL fans older than age 13 likely remember the lowest-scoring Super Bowl ever. The regrettable record was one that was set not too long ago. Defense was the dominating factor on both sides of Super Bowl 53 six years ago. Neither the Rams or Patriots were able to find the end zone for the first three quarters of the game, and they combined to score just one touchdown all game. Two of the biggest ironies of the low-scoring affair in 2019 was that the contest was the immediate successor to the second highest-scoring Super Bowl of all time, and that it also featured the Patriots, the loser of that high-scoring title game the year before. In addition, the Rams, losers of Super Bowl 53, boasted the 11th highest-scoring offense ever at the time. Los Angeles managed just three points in the Super Bowl. Here's what to know about the lowest-scoring Super Bowl ever: Expert Super Bowl picks: Unique betting insights only at USA TODAY. RANKING ALL 58 SUPER BOWLS:How does first Chiefs-Eagles clash rate in list of best to worst? What was the lowest-scoring Super Bowl ever? Super Bowl 53 was the lowest-scoring Super Bowl of all time. The Patriots defeated the Rams, 13-3, in 2019 and scored 10 of their 13 points in the fourth quarter. Los Angeles, which had just finished off a season that both tied for the second most single-season wins in franchise history, and featured a game that was the third highest-scoring game in NFL history (against Kansas City), mustered just three points. It took a 53-yard field goal – at the time, the second-longest in Super Bowl history – from kicker Greg Zuerlein to even get on the board. Patriots head coach Bill Belichick's defense completely stymied the high-powered offense orchestrated by Rams head coach Sean McVay. Quarterback Tom Brady led New England on a single touchdown drive with seven minutes left in the game, and kicker Stephen Gostkowski iced the win with a 41-yard field goal with just over a minute to go.
