Second-half Roscommon revival salvages a draw against Meath

All-Ireland SFC: Roscommon 2-15 Meath 0-21 Enda Smith spearheaded Roscommon's revival as Davy Burke's men overturned a five-point interval deficit to keep their chances of progression from Group 2 alive. A pulsating game between two evenly-matched teams saw both sides spurn chances to win it after Ruairí Kinsella brought the sides level with six minutes remaining. All of Roscommon's five second-half scores with the wind at their backs came from two-pointers, with Smith kicking three of them, while top scorer Diarmuid Murtagh added another brace. James Conlon was superb for the visitors in the opening half with 0-6, including a two-pointer, but Smith was his side's hero after the break. READ MORE Ruairí Kinsella raised his side's first orange flag with the outside of his right boot in the fifth minute before Eoghan Frayne opened up a three-point gap after the visitors capitalised on a Roscommon turnover But Roscommon wiped out that deficit when Senan Lambe set up Diarmuid Murtagh for a well-taken goal after seven minutes. Dylan Ruane nudged his side in front after Roscommon worked the ball upfield from goalkeeper Conor Carroll but the excellent James Conlon – who scored 0-5 from play during a productive opening 35 minutes – got off the mark to bring the sides level. Photograph: Evan Logan/Inpho In the 15th minute, Roscommon struck for a second goal when Shane Cunnane found Ben O'Carroll raiding in behind the Meath rearguard, and the St Brigid's forward produced an assured finish past Billy Hogan. Meath began to win the midfield battle, and Roscommon's cause wasn't helped by the loss of Niall Higgins to injury. Conlon added a couple of rapid-fire points before Daire Cregg replied for the Rossies after Lambe grabbed primary possession in the middle of the park. But Meath began to flex their muscles, mostly off Roscommon turnovers and their dominance around the middle. Conlon and Conor Duke sent over a couple of two-pointers in jig time, while Jordan Morris also found the range to open up a 0-12 to 2-3 gap. Menton arced over the Royals' fourth two-pointer of the half, and Conlon soon added to his tally to stretch his side's buffer to six points. Cregg grabbed a much-needed score for Roscommon before Morris and Ciaráin Murtagh – a free on the hooter – left it 0-16 to 2-5 in favour of Meath at the change of ends. Meath's Bryan Menton and Roscommon's Pearse Frost. Photograph: Evan Logan/Inpho The second half was laden with drama as Smith put a missed 41st-minute penalty behind him to lead his side's charge. Billy Hogan's 46th-minute two-point free from 45 metres, following earlier points from Seán Coffey and Frayne, left Meath 0-20 to 2-9 ahead, but Robbie Brennan's side would only trouble the scoreboard once more. Diarmuid Murtagh kicked a couple of two-pointers, while Smith added another to leave the Rossies ahead by the bare minimum with nine minutes remaining. Kinsella restored parity, and it took a last-ditch block from Seán Rafferty to deny Ben O'Carroll after Mathew Costello had hit the post at the other end. MP Amar Singh raises alarm over cross-border terror, drug threats at Denmark diaspora meet

Copenhagen [Denmark], May 31 (ANI): Congress MP Amar Singh, part of the all-party delegation, addressed the Indian diaspora in Copenhagen, raising concerns over Pakistan's involvement in cross-border terrorism and drug trafficking. He urged the Indian community to remain united in confronting such external threats. At the same event, India's Ambassador to Denmark, Manish Prabhat, responded to anti-India slogans raised by a small group outside the venue hosting the Indian parliamentary delegation. Hitting out at the protestors outside the venue, Ambassador Prabhat said, 'This community is unlike the community, a representation of which you saw outside on the street. And we know that how much amount they have been paid to put their duty here.' He further praised the Indian diaspora in Denmark, highlighting their positive contributions and cultural integration. Prabhat said, 'I would like to inform you that the Indian diaspora in Denmark is a thriving community. It has a strength of about 21,000 people now and the Danish society admires them. Because they are known for their hard work, their sincerity, their talent, their skills, their contribution to the Danish economy, their willingness to integrate, their respect for Danish culture and the fact that the Indian community is regarded as a vibrant community bringing the diverse cultures of India in all its colors and is known for promoting peace.' Also speaking at the gathering, Congress MP Dr Amar Singh voiced serious concerns over cross-border drug and weapon smuggling in across the Punjab border. 'In Punjab, especially after 1971, what happened was that opium was used to be sent from Pakistan. Punjab is the centre in North India for transporting drugs to Delhi and other parts of India. And I'm an eyewitness to those things. As a child, as a school student, then college student, and now for the last eight to ten years, again, as an eyewitness, that drugs and weapons are coming through drones,' he said. Singh further noted that several drones carrying narcotics and arms have been recovered from Punjab's border villages in recent years. Referring to past terror attacks in India, he said, 'When we know the reality that our neighbouring country, Pakistan, is doing this thing, how can we be quiet on this issue? And this issue has to be shared, and we all want to share with the international community that the issue of terrorism is now very serious. And in India, you will all remember Mumbai and then Pulwama, Uri, Pathankot and now Pahalgam. We all have to be united, oppose it. Terrorism is bad. Drugs are bad, weapons are bad, it damages the society.' Earlier, the Group 2 all-party delegation led by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Ravi Shankar Prasad attended the luncheon interaction with former Danish parliamentarians in Copenhagen. The event, hosted by the Indian Ambassador, provided a platform for discussion and exchange of ideas. The delegation's engagement with former MPs, including Freddy Svane, former ambassador of Denmark to India, Manu Sareen, former MP and author Helle Degn, vice president of the Mandela Center, and Niels Ahlmann-Ohlsen, former MP and currently CEO of Strategic Alliance International ApS, aimed to foster stronger ties between India and Denmark. Apart from Ravi Shankar Prasad, other members of the Indian delegation included BJP MP Daggubati Purandeswari, Shiv Sena-UBT MP Priyanka Chaturvedi, Congress MPs Ghulam Ali Khatana and Amar Singh, and Ambassador Pankaj Saran. Thrice awarded Gallinule glory at the Curragh

The Aidan O'Brien-trained second-string Thrice was awarded Friday night's Group 3 Heider Family Gallinule Stakes at the Curragh as first past the post Reyenzi was relegated to third. Johnny Murtagh's charge Reyenzi, ridden by Ben Coen, came from last to first to land the spoils by a head from Thrice with Emit a similar distance away in third. But, in delivering his challenge, Coen's mount drifted right under pressure, causing interference to both of his rivals and, following a lengthy stewards' enquiry, Reyenzi relegated to third. Thrice, disappointing in Chester and sent off at 12-1, dictated the pace and found plenty for Wayne Lordan in the closing stages before being awarded the spoils in a race in which his stable-companion and 6-4 favourite Shackleton (Ryan Moore), on his seasonal debut, could manage only fourth place. In the aftermath of this incident-filled contest, Ben Coen received as four-day careless riding ban. Earlier, Dermot Wed declared: 'It's a good start to the weekend for Juddmonte,' after well-backed debutante Fingerpaint swooped late to beat a quartet of experienced rivals in the McGuinness Maintenance Services maiden. Ridden by Chris Hayes, the Kingman filly got up late to foil Collecting Coin by a neck, Weld adding: 'She's a lovely-mannered, progressive filly, a big, powerful filly. She's been working well and this experience and stepping up to a mile will bring plenty of improvement. She'll step-up to stakes level straight away.' Hayes completed a double when John Kinsella's Moltophino, a 15-race maiden, captured the Habitat (Premier) Handicap convincingly from favourite Keke. 'It's a good way to break your duck,' declared Kinsella. 'He's been unlucky, bumping into a few and running into traffic. I was very worried about the (low) draw, but he winged the gates and Chris said he was happy away in front.' The Tattersalls Guineas festival had opened with an impressive performance from debutante and morning gamble Ipanema Queen, Adrian Murray's charge, backed from 14-1 to 7-2, bolting up by five and a half lengths under Wayne Lordan. 'She was ready to run early, but got a bit weak and we gave her a break,' explained Murray's assistant Robson Aguilar. 'She has been working well but is only 75% ready today, so there is more to come. I was impressed by how she won. We entered her for the Group 2 here on Derby weekend (the Airlie Stud), but I would say she'll go to Ascot for the Albany now.' Denied the Gallinule in the stewards' room, Murtagh had earlier won the Cavalore Equine Nutrition Fillies Handicap with the progressive Brigid's Cloak, ridden by promising 7lb claimer Patrick McGettigan. Once-raced Bonus Time looked a potential black-type filly when landing the six-furlong maiden convincingly for Gavin Cromwell and Gary Carroll. And Letterkenny-based Paul Sweeney savoured his first training success with 20-1 shot Ransom (Luke McAteer) in the finale. In Downpatrick, Gordon Elliott struck on the double, scoring with nine-year-old chasing debutant Coffeys Forge (Danny Gilligan) and Cinnamon Roll (Harry Swan) in the bumper.

Newsboy's horse racing tips for Tuesday's five meetings including Nottingham NAP

On a busy Tuesday, Newsboy likes the look of newly gelding Godolphin challenger for his NAP and fancies another making her hurdles debut at Southwell KING'S CHARTER (3.32, NAP) can start to live up to his hefty price tag by getting off the mark at Nottingham today. Efforts in two hot maiden races last year were well up to par for this grade but trainer Charlie Appleby decided the €650,000 buy would have brighter prospects as a gelding. It has worked for stable star Rebel's Romance, who took his earnings to £10.6 million at York last week, and hopefully will do the trick for King's Charter. ‌ Last year he finished third in a race won by unbeaten Group 2 winner Bay City Roller and then fourth in a Newbury maiden stacked with talent. ‌ The first, second, third and fifth from that race have all scored since and King's Charter can complete the sequence. Over jumps at Southwell TAKTIQUE GAGNANTE (4.20, NB) can get off the mark for her new connections on hurdles debut. The mare was backed into morning favouritism for a Cheltenham Bumper last month but could only finish 16th of 18. Even that form would put her in the mix on her second start for Richard Newland and Jamie Insole but she is better judged on a promising third in a Cork bumper in January. At Huntingdon Flat winner NOISY JAZZ (6.40) can make a winning debut over hurdles for the James Owen stable. SELECTIONS

Newsboy is backing Sweet William to win the featured Group 2 Yorkshire Cup at York and he expects Consecrated to deliver in the Listed Sky Bet Fillies' Stakes, both on ITV SWEET WILLIAM gets the vote over favourite Rebel's Romance in the Group 2 Boodles Yorkshire Cup (3.45) at York on John and Thady Gosden-trained six-year-old proved better than ever in 2024 with a win at this level in the Doncaster Cup in September. Sweet William can look ungainly under pressure but has made the frame in every one of his 15 career starts and the step back to a mile and three-quarters should not inconvenience Rab Havlin's partner. ‌ ‌ Karl Burke is fancied to saddle a double before the ITV cameras, completed by THUNDER RUN in the Knights Solicitors Handicap (2.42).The preceding Listed Clipper EBF Marygate Fillies' Stakes (2.10) is a good opportunity for stablemate LOVE OLIVIA to add to an impressive debut victory at Wolverhampton in the Listed Clipper EBF Marygate Fillies' Stakes (2.10).Also seeking to defend an unbeaten record at Listed level is CONSECRATED, who is taken to add to a first-time-up score at Newbury in the Sky Bet Fillies' Stakes (3.13). He missed out by a short head at Doncaster on his return, but ACRISIUS has strong claims of going one better in the Irish Thoroughbred Marketing Handicap (4.15).At Newbury, SOVEREIGN SEA should appreciate the chance to tackle a mile and a quarter when he engages with 14 opponents for the Titan Wealth Handicap (2.25).
