Man City chief promises ‘swift' transfer deals for Club World Cup
LONDON: Manchester City's Spanish manager Pep Guardiola waves to the crowd after his team's English Premier League match against Fulham at Craven Cottage in London on May 25, 2025. - AFP MANCHESTER: Manchester City chairman Khaldoon Al-Mubarak has promised the overhaul of Pep Guardiola's squad will continue at pace in the weeks ahead of the Club World Cup. After an unprecedented four consecutive Premier League titles, City suffered a dismal season by the standards set during Guardiola's reign. They finished a distant third in the Premier League, won just three of 10 games in the Champions League and lost the FA Cup final to Crystal Palace to end without a trophy for the first time since 2016/17. Khaldoon accepted the club were not 'aggressive' enough in the transfer market last year to rejuvenate their squad. City responded in January by signing Omar Marmoush, Abdukodir Khusanov, Vitor Reis and Nico Gonzalez at a combined cost of more than £172 million ($232 million). More arrivals are expected before the start of the Club World Cup on June 14 despite Guardiola's plea to work with a smaller squad next season. 'This January we had to act,' Khaldoon said in his annual end-of-season interview. 'Four players in January (came in), and that gives you an idea of what's coming this summer because we will continue. We have clearly identified who exactly are the targets, in what positions, and we have our clear number one option, our clear number two option. And we'll go about our business and it will be very clear, very swift. And our objective is to try to be ready with the new squad for the Club World Cup.' Nottingham Forest's Morgan Gibbs-White, Lyon playmaker Rayan Cherki and AC Milan midfielder Tijjani Reijnders are among those linked with a move to the Etihad. Guardiola extended his contract with the club until 2027 back in November during the worst of City's struggles. Khaldoon is confident the side that has dominated English football over the last decade will quickly be back on top. 'We will be back. This season is a season that's now behind us. Today is a new day. We start working and preparing for next season,' he added. 'I can assure you, this club will do everything possible to come back to the standards that we know we all can achieve and that we know, we will achieve.' — AFP

Jurgen Klopp's former Liverpool assistant manager Pep Lijnders set for shock move to become Pep Guardiola's new No2
JURGEN KLOPP'S former assistant manager Pepijn Lijnders is set to become Pep Guardiola's new No2 at Manchester City. Lijnders, 42, has been out of work since being sacked as RB Salzburg boss last December. 4 4 The Dutchman had accepted the gig after leaving Liverpool at the same time as pal Klopp. Lijnders had worked as the German's assistant over two spells across nine years. He coached the Reds for many seasons as they battled with Guardiola's City for the Prem title. According to The Times, Lijnders is now set to join his former rivals' coaching staff. They claim that he will work closely with Guardiola following the exits of a trio of the Spaniard's backroom team. Juanma Lillo and Inigo Dominguez have both left City, while Carlos Vicens has departed to take charge of Portuguese Europa League outfit SC Braga. Lijnders was considered for the vacant Norwich City head coaching job earlier this month. The Canaries sacked Johannes Hoff Thorup, and opted not to give the gig to caretaker boss Jack Wilshere full time. Man City plot coaching overhaul: Pep Lijnders & Kolo Toure among candidates for Guardiola
Manchester City are considering former Liverpool assistant manager Pep Lijnders for a place on Pep Guardiola's revamped coaching team. The Dutchman, who served as Jurgen Klopp's right-hand man during Liverpool's successful spell from 2018 to 2024, is currently without a job following his short-lived tenure as Red Bull Salzburg manager. Advertisement City are undergoing a backroom shake-up after their first trophyless season since 2016-17. Long-serving assistants Juanma Lillo and Inigo Dominguez will depart when their contracts expire next month. Carlos Vicens has also left to take over as head coach at Braga in Portugal. Guardiola now wants to inject fresh ideas into his coaching staff, and Lijnders has emerged as a serious candidate. According to The Times, he is one of several names under consideration. Lijnders left Liverpool alongside Klopp last summer, having previously turned down a long-term managerial role at Anfield. He was approached about succeeding Klopp, but Fenway Sports Group ultimately felt placing him directly after his former boss would be unfair. The 42-year-old helped Liverpool win the Champions League in 2019 and the Premier League in 2020. However, his only two spells as head coach — at NEC Nijmegen and Salzburg — ended prematurely. Advertisement City are also weighing up an internal promotion for Kolo Toure, who returned to the club last year as an assistant at under-18 level. Toure, 44, spent four years as a player at Manchester City before joining Brendan Rodgers' staff at Celtic and Leicester City. He briefly managed Wigan Athletic in League One, though his time there also ended in disappointment. Since returning to the Etihad, Toure has impressed academy staff with his approach and leadership. City are open to promoting him to a first-team role. With decisions still pending, City have already named under-21 manager Ben Wilkinson and his assistant Craig Mudd to assist Guardiola during the Club World Cup in the United States next month. Advertisement The final composition of Guardiola's coaching staff for the 2025-26 season will be decided in due course. While Lijnders is known for his tactical nous and close relationship with Klopp, Toure brings a player's perspective and strong emotional connection to the club. City are believed to be taking a measured approach, but both men represent intriguing additions as Guardiola looks to freshen up his staff after a rare season of disappointment.

Man City 'consider' Liverpool title winner as Pep Guardiola plots huge change
Former Liverpool assistant manager Pep Lijnders is in the running to become part of Pep Guardiola's new-look coaching staff. Manchester City announced on Wednesday that two members of Guardiola's backroom team had left the club following their below-par season. City failed to win a trophy for the first time since Guardiola's first campaign in 2016-17. It resulted in the exits of Juanma Lillo and Inigo Dominguez, whose contracts will expire next month. In addition, Carlos Vicens has left the Etihad to become the new manager of Portuguese side Braga. Guardiola is now seeking to refresh his coaching staff and Lijnders has emerged as a candidate. The Times report that the Dutchman is being considered, having left Liverpool at the same time as Jurgen Klopp 12 months ago. Lijnders was soon appointed Red Bull Salzburg manager but was sacked in December after a disastrous start to the season. He'd only been a first-team manager once before, taking charge of Eredivisie side NEC Nijmegen for a short time either side of his two spells at Liverpool. Klopp's ex-No.2 helped the Reds become European champions in 2019 before finally ending their 30-year wait for a Premier League title in 2020. City are also considering promoting Kolo Toure to a first-team coaching position. The former defender returned to the Etihad last season as assistant under-18 coach and has impressed academy staff. Toure, 44, played for City for four years before working under Brendan Rodgers at Celtic and Leicester. The Ivorian then had a brief spell at Wigan Athletic in League One. City won't rush into a decision and have already decided who'll assist Guardiola during the Club World Cup in the USA next month. The club's under-21 manager, Ben Wilkinson, and his assistant, Craig Mudd, will step up for the tournament. Should Pep Lijnders join Manchester City? Have your say in the comments section. Before Feyenoord boss Arne Slot was chosen as Klopp's successor, Lijdners was a candidate to get the Liverpool gig. The 42-year-old revealed ahead of his exit that Fenway Sports Group president Mike Gordon had personally called him to reveal that he was indeed 'really considered'. Lijnders told the Athletic: "Mike said, 'Pep, we really considered you, but I think it's fair for you that we don't put you after Jurgen'. Mike is a good guy. He knew as well. I'd made my ambition clear. It was best for the future." Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content.
