Dead crow found in Guelph tests positive for West Nile virus
A dead crow found in Guelph has tested positive for the West Nile virus. Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health said Wednesday there are currently no human cases, but the presence of the virus in the crow shows it's circulating and transmission is possible. The virus is transmitted through the bite of an infected mosquito. "While the risk of severe illness is low, we encourage everyone to take simple precautions to prevent mosquito bites," associate medical officer Dr. Matthew Tenenbaum said in a release. Public health says the most effective way to avoid the virus is to reduce the risk of getting mosquito bites. People can do that by: Wearing light-coloured clothing (including long sleeves and pants). Using an approved mosquito repellant. Repairing holes in screen doors and windows. Reducing breeding places for mosquitos by removing standing water from properties including draining potential reservoirs like flowerpots and kids' pools and by frequently replacing water in bird baths and other water features. Public Health Ontario says on its website that most people infected with West Nile virus do not show symptoms. Others may experience a fever, head and body aches, fatigue, rash or in more serious cases, meningitis (swelling of brain and/or spinal cord) or encephalitis (brain swelling).

‘Meating' those in need with a huge salami in Guelph
A big stick of salami is going a long way in Guelph, Ont. The four-and-a-half foot salami was recently gifted to the Italian Canadian Club of Guelph by Italia Salami Co. 'I was very excited,' said Lou Bertoli, who is part of the executive board with the club. Large salami Guelph A large salami sat on a counter in Guelph in this undated image. (Submitted: Lou Bertoli) But the Italian Canadian Club wanted to pay it forward. 'That led us to feeding the shelters and all the people who are slightly underprivileged,' said Bertoli. So with help from Zehrs Eramosa, who supplied the other goods for the sandwiches, the Italian Canadian Club then contacted Stepping Stone which assists people experiencing homelessness and food insecurity at several shelter locations throughout Wellington County. (Spencer Turcotte/CTV News) 'The sandwiches from today will go to all of those sites, which is really amazing,' said Elijah Walker, with Stepping Stone. With two assembly lines going, all the sandwiches were made in under an hour with a final count of 420 sandwiches. 'From our families with children who need the nourishment, to some of our seniors at our 24/7 programs, it's going to go a long way for everybody,' said Elijah Walker, who also works at Stepping Stone. By the end of Tuesday, plenty of bellies will be filled with a traditional salami sandwich. 'The Italians, you certainly won't find mayonnaise on it or hot mustard. Maybe a little bit of salt and pepper,' said Bertoli. 'It's a really good feeling and maybe they haven't eaten in a couple of days. So that really makes the Italian Club feel good.' A good feeling, knowing the big salami will have an even bigger payoff.

6 hurt, 1 person charged after head-on collision near Arthur
Six people were injured in a head-on collision near Arthur Monday evening. Emergency services were called to the two-vehicle collision on Wellington Road 109 between Sideroad 17 and Charles Street W. just after 7 p.m. Wellington OPP says a van with four people inside it collided with a truck that had two people inside. One of the passengers of the van was airlifted to a trauma centre where police say they're being treated for "non-life-threatening, yet life-altering injuries." The other three people in the van had minor injuries and were treated at the scene. The two people in the truck were taken to hospital and had minor injuries. Wellington Road 109 was closed for several hours for the investigation. A 36-year-old Brampton man has been charged under the Highway Traffic Act with careless driving causing bodily harm and failure to share half the roadway for a meeting vehicle. He will appear in a Guelph courtroom at a later date. Police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the collision, or has information, such as dashcam footage, that could help investigators to contact police or Crime Stoppers.
