PBA: Yeng Guiao says semis loss to TNT still a 'victory' for ROS

Rain or Shine head coach Yeng Guiao remains optimistic that their recent series loss to TNT is simply another step toward shaping Elasto Painters into becoming a legit title contender in the years to come. The outspoken head coach, though, admitted feeling disappointed as he was confident that they had the potential to push the Tropang 5G to at a winner-take-all Game 7 of the PBA Season 49 Philippine Cup semifinals. Still, he stressed that reaching Game 6 is already a significant win for the franchise. "It's disappointing. We felt na this was a big chance for us to at least take it to a Game 7, but wala e. Last three minutes, we missed some shots, we made some turnovers," Guiao said. "Again, it's closing out games, 'yun pa rin 'yung problema namin. We could not close it out, we couldn't make big plays when we needed them most. But we still look at it as a positive development for the team." The recent loss marked Rain or Shine's third straight playoff defeat at the hands of TNT as they also bowed to them in the semifinals stages of both the Season 49 Governors' Cup and Commissioners' Cup. But Guiao was steadfast in his belief that that they can finally get over the hump when they begin a new campaign later this year. "We still look at it as victory overall for us. The consistency of the team of making four semifinals stints, going through all of that, tingin ko nag-a-add doon sa experience, sa knowledge 'yung mga batang players namin," he said. "I think they need to experience disappointments, they need to experience playing with the good teams and closing out games. Overall, it's still a positive conference for us." Right now, all Guiao and the Elasto Painters could do is improve individually and as one unit. Guiao shared they are hoping to have a healthy roster back come their next campaign with veteran big man Beau Belga as well as young ballers Luis Villegas and Felix Lemetti all expected to join the squad. Belga was earlier diagnosed with vertigo while Villegas and Lemetti sustained an ACL and hand injury, respectively. "Tingin ko, hindi naman kailangan ng malaking overhaul 'yung team e. Ang importante lang sa amin ay makabalik si Beau, makalaro si Luis, and then makabalik si Felix. And then maybe we can think of an upgrade after that." —JMB, GMA Integrated News

Guiao on ROS' best shot at beating TNT: 'Make this series long'

Against a loaded TNT Tropang 5G side, Rain or Shine knows it's a marathon, not a sprint. Elasto Painters head coach Yeng Guiao stressed that their best chance at solving the TNT riddle is by dragging the series out as they go head-to-head in the PBA Season 49 Philippine Cup semifinals, their third straight meeting in the final four. "Our best chance is to make this series long. If it becomes a short series talo kami so at least nanalo kami ngayon, we know it's going to be five games," Guiao said after they dominated TNT in Game 3 for a breakthrough win. "Kung manalo pa kami, we know it's going to six games. So we know our best chance is really taking this series to the stretch." [Our best chance is to make this series long. If it becomes a short series, we'll lose so at least we won today, we know it's going to be five games... If we win again, we know it's going to six games. So we know our best chance is really taking this series to the stretch.] History hasn't been kind to Rain or Shine in its semifinal duels with TNT. In the Season 49 Governors' Cup, TNT steamrolled the Elasto Painters with a dominant 4–1 series win, then replicated the feat in the Commissioner's Cup the very next conference. On both occasions, the Tropang Giga didn't just advance as they went all the way to capture the championships. And head coach Yeng Guiao is hoping the third time's the charm for his squad. But he admitted it isn't going to be easy despite TNT losing key players in its grand slam bid. "They're very competitive, they're very disciplined. And double-barrel shotgun e, Pogoy and Oftana, just their sheer talent. They can take over a game," Guiao added. "Ang bigat pa rin nila. Sabi 'pag wala si RHJ, mas madali silang talunin. Hindi rin, ang hirap nilang talunin. At least naka-2-1 kami." [They're still so strong. They said when RHJ isn't there, they'll be easier to beat. It's not true, they're so hard to beat. At least we were able to make it 2-1.] Guiao sees Wednesday's Game 4 as a potential turning point in Rain or Shine's quest to finally overcome TNT. "Susubukan naming i-break 'yung thread na 'yun. Wednesday is the big game. We feel if we can break through, kasi 'pag series namin 4-1 kami nang 4-1 so at least napantay na namin 'yung level nu'ng dalawang playoffs namin sa kanila," Guiao said "'Pag nanalo kami sa Wednesday ibig sabihin nag-improve na kami. So tignan natin kung makakarating sa gano'n." [We will try to break that thread. Wednesday is the big game. We feel if we can break through, because in the past series it's always 4-1 so at least we were able to equal that level in our two playoff meetings with them... If we win on Wednesday, that means we improved. So let's see if we can get there.] —JMB, GMA Integrated News

St. Ignatius sends 6 students to Rome to witness funeral of Pope Francis

CLEVELAND (WJW) — The world continues to mourn the death of Pope Francis, including some Northeast Ohioans who are preparing to say goodbye in person. Six students from St. Ignatius High School are preparing to fly to Italy to witness the pope's funeral firsthand, a trip that was preplanned for another purpose and almost canceled. Cleveland man who went missing in 1980 identified as Cuyahoga County John Doe 'Originally, we were supposed to be going for the canonization of a young man from Milan, who himself was a graduate of a Jesuit high school,' Father Raymond Guiao said. 'But now, with everything that has happened, we will be there for the papal funeral on Saturday.' Guiao said the group — two sophomores, two juniors and two seniors — is honored to make the trip, despite the change in plans. 'We know that this will be a trip full of deep and meaningful memories,' Guiao said. Not only will this be a first-time experience for these six students, but they'll also witness history. Sandusky man arrested in ex-wife's 2001 cold case 'We're still going to get to see something pretty historical,' Senior student Noel Maddox said. 'A beloved pope just passed. We're going to be in Rome during the transition from one pope to the next. Obviously, I don't anticipate us knowing who the next pope will be during our time there. But it went from somewhat of a disappointment to an excitement where we could be part of history, which is pretty unique to me.' Maddox and junior student Danny Sweet said the trip is also a chance to deepen their faith. 'This trip means a lot to me,' Sweet said. 'It gives me a new insight into my faith and the church— how it functions and what it stands for. I think it's a really good learning experience for me.' Local man reports break-in, instead officers find $30K in drugs: DOJ 'I grew up a cradle Catholic,' Maddox said. 'I believe in the faith till the day I die. So, getting to be there with the world to celebrate his life — it means a lot. I'm really looking forward to it.'The students will be in Rome through the weekend and are scheduled to return Monday night. FOX 8 News hopes to check in with them at some point during their trip.
