KMEDA urges govt to revisit ‘unjustified' taxes, duties

KARACHI: Karachi Mobile and Electronics Dealers Association (KMEDA) has presented key suggestions ahead of the budget 2025–26, urging for tax reforms on electronic items. President of the KMEDA Minhaj Gulfam has put forward these proposals to the federal government. He urged the federal government to consider a substantial and immediate reduction in what he described as 'unjustified taxes and customs duties' on mobile phones, laptops, computer parts, tablets, and other electronic products. Gulfam highlighted that the current fiscal year's high tax rates on electronic items have created serious challenges for the business community, as well as, for customers. 'These excessive duties have disrupted imports and caused a significant rise in retail prices, placing a heavy burden on consumers.' He said that these products are essential in the digital era, playing a crucial role in education, employment, freelancing, online business, and the overall vision of a 'Digital Pakistan.' According to him, the existing tax regime is one of the main obstacles to growth in this sector. He asked the government review its tax policy in the upcoming budget and take meaningful steps to ease the financial pressure on both businesses and consumers. Copyright Business Recorder, 2025

In Noida, after 8 yrs in jail, man pleads guilty but walks free

Noida: A shift from denial to admission of crime helped a Dadri resident walk free after spending over eight years in jail. Gulfam, alias Tota, who initially sought trial under the UP Gangsters and Anti-Social Activities (Prevention) Act, 1986, changed his stance by pleading guilty in the court of the additional sessions and district judge Abhishek Pandey. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now On June 4, the court sentenced him to rigorous imprisonment of eight years, 5 months and 11 days. This was exactly the period Gulfam had already spent in jail. So, the order effectively paved the way for his release. Dadri Police had arrested Gulfam on Dec 9, 2016. He was named in an FIR along with four others — Furkan, Aurangzeb, Chand, and Irshad — for their involvement in kidnapping for ransom, creating terror, attempted murder, and loot. The prosecution told the court that Gulfam led the gang, with four separate cases registered against him across Noida. Apart from Gulfam, the others remained untraceable. During the course of the hearing, constable Mukesh Kumar produced copies of the gangster chart, FIR, and general diary, pushing for a strict punishment for Gulfam. While pursuing the arrest of other gang members, Gulfam requested for separate trial proceedings, which continued over the next few years. Eventually, he pleaded guilty under Section 313 of CrPC. Gulfam's counsel sought leniency, citing his humble background and the time he had already served behind the bars. The court agreed to adjust the sentence to match his jail term. "Additionally, the convict is directed to pay a fine of Rs 5,000, failing which he has to serve an additional seven days in jail," the court said.

Man killed while trying to save son during dispute with mobile shop owner over money

Lucknow: A man was clubbed to death while saving his son, who was being beaten by a mobile shop owner and his aides over a dispute of Rs 2,000 in the Maal police station area on Wednesday. The deceased was identified as Ramkishun, aged 55, from Mawai Khurd village. As per reports, Ramkishun's son, Dashrath, gave a mobile phone to a mobile shop owner, Gulfam for repair. He also gave Gulfam Rs 2,000. It was alleged that whenever Dashrath asked Gulfam to return the mobile phone and money, Gulfam used delaying tactics. On the fateful day, Gulfam finally denied ever taking the mobile phone and money from Dashrath. This escalated into a heated argument between Dashrath and Gulfam. In the early hours of Wednesday, Gulfam came with his friends to Dashrath's house and attacked him. Ramkishun heard the commotion and intervened to save his son, but was beaten to death. When the police arrived, Dashrath was gasping and was taken to the CHC, where doctors referred him to the trauma centre, where he was pronounced dead by the doctors. A heavy police force was deployed to prevent clashes between the warring groups. About 10 policemen have been deployed at the house of the deceased, and policemen are also stationed at various locations in the village streets. DCP of south zone, Nipun Agarwal said that on the complaint of Ramkishun's second son, Jaskaran, the police registered an FIR against Gulfam, Shanu, Chunni, Munavvar, Guthki and Asif, all of Maal.

Exclusive - Aladdin: Naam Toh Suna Hoga fame Gulfam Khan Hussain: Supporting cast members also deserve recognition

Gehna: Zevar Ya Zanjeer actor Gulfam Khan Hussain has always brought depth and nuance to every character she portrays. whether on television or in films. She feels that a supporting cast is equally important for a show or a film and should be recognized for their performances. She said, 'I truly believe that supporting cast members also deserve recognition. If the supporting cast is strong and their characters are well-written, they can really strengthen a show. Recognition should not be limited to leads alone.' When asked about television specifically, she pointed out that recognition does come to the supporting cast, especially when their roles are impactful. But she added, 'Generally speaking, from my experience outside of this current show, we really have to work hard as a supporting cast. Often, we're not given enough importance or strong scenes. However, in Gehna, it has been very different.' Talking about her ongoing show, she revealed that every character is being given attention, and she believes it's because the producer has been a writer himself. She added, 'He understands the value of each role. Trust me, if you give depth and importance to your supporting characters — not by sidelining the lead, but along with them—you'll get so much more content, subplots, and drama in your show.' The difference between working in films and TV, Gulfam mentioned, lies in the process. She said, 'In films, you usually receive the script well in advance — sometimes a month or at least two weeks before the shoot. On TV, you often get 10-12 pages in the morning and have to memorize and deliver them the same day. Preparation time is limited. However, she added, 'One advantage in TV is that within the first week, you grasp your character and get into the flow. In films, there are long gaps. You work for a few days, then have 15-20 days off, and it takes time to get back into character. When it comes to acting, film acting is usually more subtle — depending on the genre. If it's a loud film, you act accordingly. If it's a slice-of-life film, then the performance is more natural. ' As a trained writer, she brings more than performance to her sets—she brings structure and insight. 'There are times when lines are repetitive, or the character traits feel similar. But being a writer helps me organically twist or shift the lines while keeping the core emotion intact. It also helps other characters in the scene, making the overall performance more impactful,' Gulfam ended. Gulfam Khan: I love the joy Christmas brings along
