Furious homeowners find their gardens partially collapsed and fissures in the ground 'due to earthshaking construction work for £245m tram line'

Residents have been furious after construction work on a £245million tram line has wreaked havoc on their gardens. Locals in Middle Meadow, Tipton, have been left with partially collapsed gardens and 'cracks in their lawns' amid Midland Metro Alliance's earthshaking work. The tram network had been laying around 6.8 miles of extra track as part of multi-million pound Brierley Hill Metro Extension, which would include 17 stops. However, according to enraged homwowners, works on the new tramline have ruined their back gardens by causing cracks in walls and fissures to appear in the ground. Ryan Kumar, who lives with his parents Gurpreet and Ash, has blamed the developers and their 'heavy vibration work at the bottom of [their] valley' for their ruined garden. 'They were doing heavy vibration and we noticed the houses were shaking and then we saw cracks appear in the garden,' he said. Now, he barely goes into his garden as he doesn't 'want to look' at the aftermath. 'When this all started, the first thing I'd do when I woke up was look out the back window and see if the end of my garden was still there.' First built in 2005, some properties in Middle Meadow are worth up to £450,000. However one unfortunate resident, who spent £40,000 turning his garden into an oasis, now could lose it to a potential collapse. 'I have lived here for many years and have spent lots of money on the garden,' he said. 'I would estimate around £40,000 to make it look the way I wanted. These earthworks are shaking the foundations of our gardens. 'The cracks in the lawn and the garden walls have got bigger and bigger so you can easily fit your hand in them. 'People living here really fear their gardens will just crumble away.' Construction of a new branch line from Wednesbury to Brierley Hill was previously halted by the Covid pandemic in 2020 but started again last year. The Transport for West Midlands who are responsible for the Midland Metro Alliance, said has launched a probe into the garden collapses. A spokesperson said: 'We have taken this matter very seriously and fully understand the frustration residents are experiencing. 'As soon as we were made aware of the issues, we began working with residents and specialist engineers to carry out an investigation to identify the potential cause. 'Some investigations are ongoing because the potential causes are complex given they include unknown historic ground conditions and developments over the years which predate the start of works for the metro. 'We have taken steps to mitigate the risks and we have supported residents throughout this process and will continue to do so as works progress with stabilising the embankment.'

BKI operative nabbed after brief encounter in Mohali

The Mohali police Monday arrested a Babbar Khalsa International (BKI) operative following an encounter. The accused had earlier opened fire outside a property dealer's office in Aerocity, Mohali, as an act of extortion. During the police retaliation, he was shot in the leg and was admitted to a local hospital. 'The accused, associated with Babbar Khalsa International, was apprehended after a police encounter in Mohali. On July 10, he had fired shots outside a property dealer's office in Aerocity to demand extortion money. He was injured in retaliatory police firing,' said SP (Investigation) Saurav Jindal. The accused, identified as Gurpreet Singh, alias Gopi, hails from Mandi Gobindgarh in the Fatehgarh Sahib district. Initial investigation revealed that he was operating under instructions from terrorists based abroad, who provided him weapons and financial support. SP Jindal, who was present at the crime scene, told reporters that the State Special Operation Cell (SSOC), Mohali, had earlier arrested three BKI-linked operatives on Sunday. These individuals were involved in grenade attacks on police posts in Badshahpur (Patiala district) and Ajeemgarh (Haryana). 'All three arrested were linked to Babbar Khalsa International. During their interrogation, Gurpreet's name surfaced, and we began efforts to apprehend him,' said Jindal. SP Jindal said, 'After Gurpreet Singh was identified as a BKI operative, he was placed under surveillance. When he was spotted riding a motorcycle, the police attempted to get him to surrender. Instead, he opened fire at the police, prompting a retaliatory response.' Around five rounds were exchanged during the brief encounter. Gurpreet was hit in the leg and incapacitated. He was taken into custody and hospitalised. The SP said Gurpreet already had four criminal cases registered against him, including incidents of extortion and firing. 'He has served jail term in the past. Further interrogation is on,' he added.

Punjab teen taking fenced shortcut on Hemkund route dies after falling in gorge

Dehradun: An 18-year-old pilgrim from Punjab died after falling into a deep gorge near Jungle Chatti, around 2km ahead of Pulna in Chamoli district, while taking a shortcut that had been fenced for trekkers' safety on the Hemkund Sahib yatra route on Sunday. Gurpreet Singh, a resident of Kale village in Amritsar district, was part of a 90-member pilgrimage group headed to the high-altitude shrine. Govindghat police said that he strayed from the designated trail and attempted to use an old, damaged shortcut path that had been officially closed for safety reasons. After crossing a safety railing, he slipped and fell into a steep gorge. Rescue teams from the Govindghat police, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and local units launched an immediate operation. Despite the rugged terrain and steep slopes, they found Gurpreet and brought him back to the main trail. He was rushed to the nearest hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival. Nand Kishor Joshi, disaster management officer of Chamoli, said, "The recent death highlights the serious risks involved in deviating from designated trekking paths. Despite repeated warnings and signage posted along the route, some pilgrims still attempt to take shortcuts that are either damaged, unsafe, or officially closed. We urge all yatris to strictly adhere to safety protocols and follow the marked trails to prevent such tragedies." Gurpreet's death brings the number of fatalities during this year's yatra to four since it began on May 25. All four occurred within the initial weeks of the pilgrimage, which attracts thousands of Sikh and Hindu devotees annually to the Himalayan shrine, located at an altitude of over 15,000 feet. Earlier, Karamjit Singh, 32, a pilgrim from Karnal, Haryana, died after being struck by falling boulders near Atalakoti while descending from the shrine. In two other incidents, Kuldeep Singh, 74, from Delhi, and another pilgrim, aged around 50 and yet to be identified, died of suspected cardiac complications. According to state govt data, over 2 lakh pilgrims have undertaken the Hemkund Sahib yatra since the season began.
