Homeowners with garden fences told to 'contact council' or risk £20k fine

New rules came in last week under The Town and Country Planning (General Permitted Development) (England) Order 2015 give households guidance - here's all you need to know UK homeowners with garden fences could be slapped with hefty £20,000 fines for a common blunder following new regulations. The Town and Country Planning (General Permitted Development) (England) Order 2015 has recently updated guidelines for households. Which? legal expert Gurpreet Chhokar warned: "If you're thinking of putting up a new garden fence this summer, there are a few important things to bear in mind to make sure you don't break any laws and find yourself landed with a fine." Gurpreet advised: "If you don't have planning permission then your fence can't be any higher than two metres from the ground." ‌ While rear garden fences can stand at two metres, stricter rules apply to front garden barriers, reports Birmingham Live. Front garden fences must not exceed one metre - just over three feet - according to the new guidance. ‌ Gurpreet further explained: "There will also be some cases where planning permission will be needed if the fence is more than a meter high - such as if it borders a highway or the footpath of a highway if you're not sure, then it's worth getting in touch with your local planning authority (which is usually your local council) to check." Before making alterations or enhancements to your property, it's crucial to determine whether planning permission is required. Proceeding without the necessary permissions could result in being forced to revert any changes made. Jimmy Englezos, from Ronseal, warned: "If it's your neighbour who owns the fence, you must seek permission from them before making any changes to your property's side of the fence, this includes hanging fairy lights, drilling holes or growing vertical plants. "Similarly, if you want to lean something against the fence or grow plants next to it that may make contact with the fence, you have to seek permission from the owners first as it could cause damage." He further warns: "If you own the fence, you can decorate the space however you like, as long as it doesn't place your neighbour or their property at risk." And don't forget, causing a statutory nuisance with your fence, like flooding or blocked drains, might hit you with fines up to £5,000 – or even £20,000 if you're running a business.

In 2022, Sukhpreet Singh left his home in Haryana's Fatehabad and went to Mumbai to pursue his dream of becoming a model. He was accompanied by his cousin, Gurpreet. On Saturday, the duo was arrested by a team of Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force (STF) from Gautam Buddha Nagar for their alleged involvement in a contract killing, police said. They have been accused of killing a woman in Navi Mumbai for Rs 5 lakh. 'Sukhpreet (24) and Gurpreet (23) were arrested after the STF received an alert on Saturday afternoon that they were near the Ghanta roundabout in Greater Noida's Surajpur, and were trying to escape,' said an officer. According to the police, victim Gurpreet Singh, a resident of Nathoke village in Moga, was attacked by around 15 members of a married woman's family late Wednesday night. Patiala: Sangrur police have dismantled a well-organised smuggling operation run from inside the district jail, leading to the arrest of a deputy superintendent of police (DSP), a Class-IV employee, 15 jail inmates, and two others. The investigation began following intelligence inputs, prompting a raid inside Sangrur jail, where authorities recovered nine mobile phones, four smartwatches, 50 grams of opium, 12 grams of heroin, and other prohibited materials. As the probe progressed, authorities identified Class-IV employee Prashant as a key player in the smuggling network, allegedly facilitating the illicit trade of drugs and mobile phones. Following these developments, a case was registered at Sangrur city police station, and eight jail inmates were subsequently booked. They were brought to court on production warrants for further investigation. The investigation also led to the arrest of a woman, Banto, a resident of Sunam, who is said to have supplied mobile phones to Prashant. On May 13, DSP (security) Gurpreet Singh, stationed at Sangrur jail, was arrested for his involvement in the racket. He has been sent to Barnala jail. Investigators found that the DSP played a significant role in facilitating the smuggling of drugs and mobile phones into the facility. Payments for these illegal activities were traced to UPI transactions linked to the DSP's family members. Sangrur SSP SS Chahal, revealed that the investigation uncovered the involvement of inmates Guraj Singh of Patiala, Raghbir Singh of Faridkot, and Gurchet Singh, of Tarn Taran, who had come into contact with DSP Gurpreet around a month ago. Gurchet is the son of Banto. "A relative of inmate Gurchet paid Rs 40,000 in cash to DSP Gurpreet and an additional Rs 26,000 via an online transaction to the DSP's family member. In return, DSP Gurpreet supplied 25 grams of heroin and two mobile phones to the inmates. Of the heroin, 12 grams were recovered from Ravi, an inmate from Malerkotla, while the remaining 13 grams are believed to have been consumed by other inmates," SSP Chahal stated. Following these revelations, DSP Gurpreet was sent to jail, and charges of corruption were added to his case. As of now, 19 individuals have been arrested in connection with the drug smuggling network, with more arrests expected as the investigation continues to unfold. In a tweet on social media platform X, Punjab DGP reiterated the state's "zero-tolerance" policy toward corruption and criminal collusion. "No one, regardless of rank, will be spared," the DGP stated, further affirming the Punjab Police's commitment to eradicating drugs and maintaining law and order in the state. SSP Chahal further noted that DSP Gurpreet Singh had only joined the services at Sangrur Jail in Jan this year. Of the 19 individuals arrested so far, around 15 are already incarcerated, and authorities expect additional arrests as the investigation continues to expand. MSID:: 121192751 413 |
