Egypt Denies Confiscation Claims Related to Saint Catherine Monastery
H-Tayea On Thursday, Egypt firmly rejected recent claims suggesting the confiscation of land belonging to the historic Saint Catherine's Monastery in South Sinai, reaffirming its full commitment to safeguarding the Monastery's unique religious status and spiritual sanctity. The Presidency of the Arab Republic of Egypt and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs have both issued strong statements clarifying the facts surrounding the recent court ruling issued on May 28. The Presidency reaffirmed Egypt's unwavering dedication to protecting the sacred standing of Saint Catherine's Monastery, noting that the court's decision consolidates this status and is in full alignment with the principles President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi emphasized during his recent visit to Athens on May 7. The Presidency also underlined the importance of preserving the deeply rooted and fraternal relations between Egypt and Greece, stressing that these historic ties must not be undermined by misinformation. In parallel, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs clarified that the court ruling does not affect the Monastery, its surrounding archaeological and religious sites, or its legal and spiritual status. Rather, the ruling marks the first official legal recognition of the Monastery's standing, affirming its historical and cultural significance and confirming the monks' continued right to use and access the religious areas. The statement explained that while some additional areas near the Monastery are located within designated natural reserves and had previously been subject to contracts with local authorities, the court ruled in favor of allowing continued religious use of these spaces in respect of the Monastery's spiritual importance. As for remote, uninhabited land parcels far from the Monastery and with no documented ownership, the court deemed them public state property. These lands, the statement affirmed, have no bearing on the Monastery's operations or holdings. Egypt called for responsible and accurate reporting and urged all parties to consult the full court text before making judgments. Greece Stresses Importance of Preserving Orthodox Heritage at Saint Catherine's Monastery
H-Tayea The Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs has affirmed ongoing coordination with Egyptian authorities to safeguard the sacred character of the Holy Monastery of Saint Catherine on Mount Sinai, following a recent ruling issued by the Ismailia Court of Appeals (Tor Sinai Circuit) regarding disputed land surrounding the historic site. In response to a journalist's question about the developments, Ministry Spokesperson Lana Zochiou stated: "The governments of Greece and Egypt have been working systematically to reach an agreement that will safeguard the sacred Greek Orthodox character of the area. We are awaiting notification of the Egyptian court's decision, which was issued yesterday." Zochiou further noted that the Greek Foreign Minister had immediately contacted his Egyptian counterpart, emphasizing that 'There is no room for deviation from the common understanding, as expressed by the leaders of the two countries at the recent High-Level Cooperation Council in Athens.' The statement comes after an Egyptian court ruling reaffirmed the religious rights of the monastic community at Saint Catherine's Monastery while clarifying the state's ownership of the land as public property. According to the verdict, the court recognized the right of the Monastery's followers to religious use and presence in the area, including the main monastery and adjacent historical sites. These activities are conducted under the authority of the Bishop of the Monastery, appointed by Presidential Decree No. 306 of 1974, with oversight of the antiquities provided by Egypt's Supreme Council of Antiquities. The court also upheld the validity of land use agreements between the Saint Catherine Local Council and the Monastery, affirming that these arrangements do not constitute illegal encroachments. Egypt Sends Official Invitations to World Leaders for Grand Opening of the Grand Egyptian Museum
H-Tayea Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly announced that official invitations have been sent to kings, presidents, and heads of state to attend the inauguration of the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM)—the largest cultural and archaeological project in Egypt's modern history. Speaking at a press conference, the Prime Minister described the event as a major milestone for Egypt and a symbol of its global cultural influence. Madbouly also addressed several pressing domestic issues: He stated that the annual revenues of the Endowments Authority (Awqaf) have reached EGP 3 billion. He emphasized that there are no abrupt increases in electricity prices, noting that any adjustments are based on production costs, announced transparently, and aligned with the previously declared schedule. "We do not implement changes suddenly," he affirmed. On the Old Rent Law, the Prime Minister confirmed that President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi has instructed the government to give due consideration to social concerns. Accordingly, residential units will have a longer transitional phase than commercial properties, and rent adjustments will be implemented gradually, taking into account regional and socioeconomic differences. He clarified that his directive to survey the Endowments Authority's assets aims at maximizing returns, not selling off properties. 'Waqf funds are sacred and must be preserved as private, protected assets,' he said. Regarding energy supplies, Dr. Madbouly noted that Egypt will receive four natural gas shipments this year to meet domestic needs. Although national gas production is expected to dip temporarily, output will begin increasing by September. Addressing the recent fuel distribution issue, he attributed the disruption to a conflict between a private company and a refinery. The President has ordered legal action against those responsible. He also reassured citizens that all meat imports are rigorously inspected and certified to meet Islamic halal standards. Eid al-Adha to Fall on Friday, June 6, Says Saudi Supreme Court Kingdom
H-Tayea The Supreme Court of Saudi Arabia has announced that Wednesday, May 28, 2025, will mark the first day of the Islamic month of Dhul-Hijjah, 1446 AH. Accordingly, the Day of Arafat will fall on Thursday, June 5, and Eid al-Adha will be celebrated on Friday, June 6, 2025. The announcement follows confirmed moon sightings in several locations, including Tumair, Sudair, and Taif, where the crescent was observed with the naked eye. The Court's statement expressed hope that these blessed days will bring peace, prosperity, and blessings to the Islamic world. With the beginning of Dhul-Hijjah, Muslims around the world prepare to observe the first ten days, considered the most sacred days of the Islamic year. They hold special spiritual significance, as highlighted in the Qur'an and the sayings ofthe Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), who said: 'There are no days during which righteous deeds are more beloved to Allah than these days.' In Saudi Arabia, preparations for the Hajj season are now in full swing. Millions of pilgrims are expected to arrive from within the Kingdom and abroad after authorities expanded registration capacity and streamlined pilgrimage procedures this year. The Ministry of Hajj and Umrah confirmed its full readiness to welcome pilgrims, in coordination with health, security, and service agencies. A modern digital infrastructure has been deployed to ensure safety and comfort across all phases of the pilgrimage. Al-Mashat Meets Development Partners to Expand Private Sector-Focused Programs

Al-Mashat, held a meeting with the Executive Committee of the Development Partners Group (DPG) in Egypt. The committee, co-chaired by UN Resident Coordinator Elena Panova and EU Head of Cooperation Sophie Vanhaeverbeke, includes representatives from international institutions and embassies from France, Germany, Canada, Japan, the UK, the World Bank, and the French Development Agency. The meeting focused on aligning development cooperation with Egypt's national priorities and Vision 2030, especially amid declining global development financing. Participants discussed the importance of maximizing the impact of available resources and intensifying strategic coordination between development partners and the Egyptian government to meet the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Dr. Al-Mashat affirmed Egypt's commitment to developing innovative mechanisms of joint cooperation to drive private sector-led economic growth and promote sustainable development. She emphasized that the Development Partners Group is a vital platform to coordinate programs, prevent duplication, and ensure efforts are directed toward national priorities. The government seeks to rely more on blended finance, leverage private investment, and diversify funding sources to reduce dependency on traditional development assistance. The Minister also highlighted Egypt's expanded strategy for mobilizing development finance through the Ministry's framework "Sustainability and Financing for Economic Development," which prioritizes evidence-based policies, a stronger private sector role, and economic competitiveness. This framework is designed to improve the business climate, encourage export-led growth, and promote regional economic integration. Central to Egypt's long-term strategy is the Integrated National Financing Strategy (E-INFS), which identifies financing gaps and promotes partnerships to channel resources into critical sectors like healthcare, education, sanitation, and social protection. These efforts also aim to increase access to green finance and investment in climate adaptation projects. Dr. Al-Mashat reiterated that localizing the SDGs is a strategic priority. With support from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Egypt has developed governorate-level reports to map regional strengths and development needs, enhancing policy alignment and improving service delivery across the country. The meeting also addressed labor market dynamics and the importance of creating a balanced legal environment for both workers and employers. Dr. Al-Mashat underlined the Ministry's coordination with the National Wages Council and the Ministry of Labor to ensure inclusive growth and job creation. As Chair of the Ministerial Committee for Entrepreneurship, the Minister discussed ongoing efforts to support startups and innovation in priority sectors such as ICT. She emphasized that entrepreneurship is a key pillar for long-term growth and a catalyst for competitiveness.
