Thousands gather at Dataran Merdeka in solidarity with Palestinian people

KUALA LUMPUR — About 2,000 people from diverse backgrounds gathered at Dataran Merdeka yesterday to show solidarity with the Palestinian people during the Malaysia Bangkit Untuk Gaza rally. The rally commenced with marches from three main points: the Masjid Negara, Masjid Jamek Sultan Abdul Samad, and Kompleks Sogo, before participants convened in front of the Sultan Abdul Samad Building. Despite rain around 4 pm, participants remained enthusiastic, continuing their march while wearing mufflers in the colours of the Palestinian flag and chanting slogans such as 'Bebaskan Palestin' and 'Undur Israel dari Gaza'. The event at Dataran Merdeka resumed at around 5 pm with a pantomime performance by Palestinian children, followed by songs and speeches from various attendees. Participants also performed the Maghrib prayer in congregation at the assembly site before the programme, organised by the Humanity 4 Gaza (H4G) Secretariat, continued. The event brought together 20 Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) from across the country. Dang Wangi police chief ACP Affendy Sulaiman said that 400 police personnel were deployed to ensure security and manage traffic throughout the rally, working closely with Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL). 'As of 8.30 pm, we estimate that more than 2,000 participants attended the rally. The entire event was conducted peacefully and in a controlled manner,' he said when contacted. — BERNAMA

2,000 attend 'Malaysia Bangkit Untuk Gaza' rally at Dataran Merdeka

KUALA LUMPUR: Despite heavy rain, about 2,000 people gathered at Dataran Merdeka here today for the "Malaysia Bangkit Untuk Gaza (H4G)" rally, demonstrating strong Malaysian solidarity with the Palestinian cause. The rally, which began at 4pm, brought together various segments of society and included participants from 20 non-governmental organisations (NGOs) from across the country. A Harian Metro observation found that attendees started marching towards Dataran Merdeka from nearby areas, such as Masjid Jamek, Masjid Negara, and city-centre shopping malls, from 5pm. They carried Palestinian flags and banners condemning Zionist aggression. Among those who attended were Malaysian Muslim Consumers Association (PPIM) chief activist, Datuk Nadzim Johan; politician Chua Tian Chang; and Terengganu Menteri Besar's Office special officer for non-Islamic affairs, Dr Balachandran Gopal Krishnan. Police kept a close watch on the peaceful assembly, closing major roads leading to Dataran Merdeka to ensure the event's smooth and safe progression. The event featured nasyid performances, poetry, and a flash mob in the opening session. Other segments included speeches and performances by young people, followed by Maghrib prayers, Solat Hajat, and special prayers (munajat), as well as a forum on Gaza. A special screening on the suffering of the people in Gaza was also held before speeches by political figures, NGOs, and international representatives, concluding with the reading of the Malaysia For Palestine Declaration. Yesterday, Harian Metro reported that police expected 5,000 people to attend the rally at Dataran Merdeka. The Dang Wangi District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Sulizmie Affendy Sulaiman, said attendees from NGOs, universities, and the public would gather at three main locations, Masjid Negara, Masjid Jamek Sultan Abdul Samad, and Sogo, before moving to Dataran Merdeka. According to international media reports, Israel has closed all crossings into the Gaza Strip since March 2, 2025, blocking the entry of most food and medical aid and causing widespread famine. The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) warned that malnutrition rates among children under five have doubled between March and June due to the ongoing blockade.

About 5,000 expected at 'Malaysia Bangkit untuk Gaza' rally tomorrow at Dataran Merdeka

KUALA LUMPUR: Around 5,000 participants are expected to take part in the Palestine solidarity rally, "Malaysia Bangkit untuk Gaza," scheduled for tomorrow at Dataran Merdeka. Dang Wangi district police chief Assistant Commissioner Sulizmie Affendy Sulaiman said participants, comprising non-governmental organisations (NGOs), students, and the public, will gather at three main locations before proceeding to Dataran Merdeka. "The participants will gather at three main locations, namely, Masjid Negara, Masjid Jamek Sultan Abdul Samad, and Kompleks Sogo, before marching to Dataran Merdeka. "We anticipate traffic congestion heading towards the city centre due to the increased number of rally participants entering the area. "However, traffic control monitoring will be implemented to ensure the smooth movement of the public," he said in a statement today. He advised organisers and participants to comply with all regulations and laws during the assembly, in line with the constitutional right to peaceful assembly. Sulizmie Affendy said several actions are prohibited during the rally, including carrying sharp objects and dangerous weapons, as well as bringing or setting off firecrackers, fireworks, smoke bombs, or flares. "They are also prohibited from carrying or displaying placards containing elements of race, religion, or royalty (3R), making defamatory speeches, bringing children, causing riots, or disobeying authorities. "In addition, drone flying is banned in the assembly area as it may endanger the public and property," he said. He urged the public to cooperate with officers on duty and warned that strict action would be taken against individuals or groups causing disorder, riots, or extreme provocation. He said police are committed to ensuring safety around Kuala Lumpur while ensuring that daily activities and the economy are not disrupted. Earlier, Humanity for Gaza (H4G) said it would be organising the rally to voice the sentiments of Malaysians regarding the atrocities committed by the Israeli regime in Gaza. Its chairman Datuk Wan Mohamad Datuk Sheikh Abdul Aziz said the rally will present several demands as a clear message from Malaysians to the world.
